Found this nontypical's sheds two years ago while coyote hunting. Estimated him to be 12" wide after I accidentally located his area the following July while looking for my escaped horse and mule.

On this particular hunt, I was hunting about a mile from where I found his sheds. Earlier in the week, I had stalked within 70 yards of him bedded at sunrise when a coyote came behind me and started barking at me like a dog. The buck stood up, looked at me disgusted, and walked off. I found him across the road in the soybeans pictured here. He had bedded in the beans all day. A Cessna 150 had spotted him and circled the field for about ten minutes. I didn't realize they were looking at him until he stood up later a hundred yards in front of me. The day before this, he crossed the road behind me so close I could hear his hooves on the pavement. He was with a very wide 9 point I passed up this year. I could tell he was irritated with the wide 9. Later, in September 2023, I passed the wide 9 on the ground. Something told me it was a bad sign the big nontypical was nowhere to be seen.

The non-typical bucks are cool to watch each yr waiting and checking cameras in Aug to see what they did this yr. We passed Gimpy, he had a deformed front hoof and broken leg, for 3 yrs to see what he would do. He was only 9” wide but had lots of character. I got close to him 3 times but couldn’t seal the deal. When we found him his skull was oddly small and the side of his face was broken then healed so I’m assuming he was hit by a car when he was 1.5 and maybe the coyotes finally caught up to him.

Yes, those look like they shed a little too much.

Well at least you have some great memories Jason. The chase is the best part. Doesn’t always end the way we wished it would.

The neighbor's wife found him in the creek across the road about 1/2 a mile from where I commonly found him. They found a 190" nontypical last August, which is about the same time I believe this one died from EHD. When I scored his sheds 2 years ago, I came up with 170" based on a 12" width and 17 score able points. At time of death, he is 13" wide and has 18 points, some of which are longer, and some are shorter from 2 years prior. I'll measure him this weekend and post a score.

He scored 170" on the sheds Forrest. At death, he has a G2 that grew at least 5 inches. The pictures do not represent the mass and all 17-18 points. Some of his diameter measurements were 7". I expect him to still be in the 170"s

It's amazing to me, that a "testosterone surge" reproduces the same exact characteristics in these non-typical antlers year after year (but larger each year, until they reach the "peak").

Would love to know the "science" behind that, as it relates to antler growth?
