for those interested...the national association of intercollegiate athletics announced the following yesterday...

"Participation by students in sports designated as female by the NAIA: Only NAIA student-athletes whose biological sex* is female may participate in NAIA-sponsored female sports."

"The policy goes into effect on Aug. 1.

The NAIA’s Council of Presidents voted in favor of the policy change, 20-0, according to CBS Sports."

the 20-0 vote is very encouraging. hopefully this will give the ncaa and nfhs the courage to follow suit. it has to start somewhere...

Brotsky's point is obviously that faith-based schools will have a predictable take on this, and thus, a 20-0 vote. Not surprising! The schools full of lefties who make up the NCAAs... that'll be a different deal. The reality of life Missouri points out won't really matter much to them.

An interesting discussion of the "Religion / Reality" issue.

Religion: Why We Need to Regain a Mythos In its broadest sense, religion is about a shared narrative for meaning making. Updated March 29, 2024 | Reviewed by Michelle Quirk

Share on FacebookShare Share on TwitterTweet Share on LinkedInShare Share via EmailEmail KEY POINTS As justifying creatures, humans must generate answers for both what is the case and what ought to be the case. Science is a justification system that helps generate answers for what is the case, but it is mute on values. Religion can be thought of a justification system that binds groups and orients them toward what ought to be. This post was co-authored by Ken Baskin.

As we described in a previous post, the concept of Religion1 can refer to a wide variety of practices and beliefs. Many in the West think of Religion in terms of believing in a supernatural God. A better term for this is theism, and we do not think it is wise to equate the concept of Religion to theism. Instead, we see Religion in broader terms: It provides a mythos for a culture or group.

What is mythos? To understand what we mean by mythos, we need to examine how the human brain organizes conscious experience around a symbolic order. Terrence Deacon2 calls this ordering the “defining attribute of human beings.” That symbolic order enables people in any community to interpret their world so that they can cooperate in meeting the deepest challenges to their survival. As a result, culture creates a shared virtual reality. The beliefs and values of any community emerge from their symbolic order, and, especially in pre-literate societies, that order is communicated in its mythos.

For instance, survival in Ancient Egypt depended upon the annual flooding of the Nile and the agricultural abundance it produced from the relatively small strips of fertile land on either side of the river. As a result, its symbolic order was the cycle of birth-death-and-rebirth that produced this abundance. We can see this order in the myth of the sun god Ra, driving his sun chariot through the sky during the day and into the underworld during the night, to reappear in the morning. Similarly, the god Horus, the protector of the Nile’s abundance, is in a continuing battle with his uncle Seth, who represents the chaos of the desert. Horus also represents the Pharaoh.

Because people in any society are repeatedly exposed to their mythos and the rituals that celebrate it, they learn to think in the terms of their symbolic order and build institutions that reflect it.

Justification systems The centrality of any society’s symbolic order is the key reason that Religion is such a central justification system, as UTOK, the Unified Theory of Knowledge, notes. UTOK's Justification Systems Theory posits that there was an important tipping point in human evolution when our ancestors started talking in sentences. Sentences, in the form of propositions, carry meanings that can be questioned. This “question-answer dynamic” reinforces the process by which humans form networks of beliefs and values. UTOK calls these networks “justification systems” because they link together to develop a coordinated sense among people of what is and what ought to be the case. As such, they provide the structure for legitimizing how people think about the world and how they should behave.

In more concrete terms, people need a structure of understanding to explain both why things are the way they are and what is the right way to live, which are implied in their symbolic orders. As a result, they face at least two fundamental challenges—justifying what is the case and justifying what ought to be the case. We can call the first the problem of facts and the second the problem of values.

In the context of “normal” human lived experience, these two problems are bound up together. That is, to live adaptively, an individual or group must constantly be assessing what is the case and acting on what ought to be the case. If we consider animals, they have sensory and perceptual systems for detecting what is the case, and they have motivational and emotional systems that drive them toward valued outcomes (i.e., what ought to be). These elements are bound together to guide coordinated action.

As primates, humans exist as embodied creatures that live in the world via perceptions, motivations, and emotions that are bound together. Humans also are cultured persons who can self-reflect and justify their actions. As justification systems have evolved and become more refined, they have divided into different domains.

Modern science One of the most obvious divisions emerged with the advent of modern science. Modern science is a sophisticated justification system for deciphering what is the case. That is, modern science can be framed as a kind of knowledge technology that works to divide out human values and subjective experiences to determine the most logical claims about reality that can be objectively defended.

By understanding science as the systematic justification of what is the case, we can now explain how religion functions. Extending the argument from our first post, we contend that, to a significant extent, religion acts as a central human justification system, determining what ought to be. That is, we can frame religion in terms of the belief-value networks that emerge from our symbolic orders and shape how we see and experience value in the universe, in our collective groups, and in our personal lives. It relates to what binds us together in a story, what gives meaningful shape to the cosmos, and what places us in a network with others that enables us to determine what is sacred or transcendent.

This analysis allows us to see clearly why we are facing something of a meaning crisis, especially in the West. In concrete terms, the Christian justification system that emerged in Europe developed both a theistic Religion and a natural philosophy. However, as the natural philosophy grew into natural science, it generated a justification system that undermined a theistic worldview and its dual worlds of heaven and earth. Instead, what we were left with via science was a fairly cold description of “what is,” and essentially no justification system for what ought to be.

We believe that humans need to have coherent justifications for both what is the case and what ought to be the case. We can see through the Greek terms “logos” and “mythos” that these are two different kinds of justifications, but we need them both3. Science has given us a good way to develop our logos. However, it has not been framed in a way that also is conducive to cultivating a mythos that gives us a shared narrative for how we ought to live in the world. We believe this is one of the great tasks of this century.

The weight lifting competition's are a glaring example of biological male vs female physiology.

There is a recent study out of Norway or one of those northern euro countries showing young kids fluctuate on their thoughts about transitioning… but by adult hood most end up accepting their natural gender. ( not the older Swedish study)

This goes to show the idiocy of forcing dangerous drugs or surgery on a young child before they have the capability of an adult decision process.

Fully agree. But also want to point out while rare , hermaphrodites do exist.

Had one as a classmate growing up. Used the boy's locker room to change after swimming, usually didn't go well for the individual. Not only did the individual visibly have both sets of sex organs but had many other health issues. Almost blind and deaf, severely obese and had diabetes, plus kidney and adrenaline gland issues.. Preferred the male pronoun but also had a gender neutral first name. Known for learning disabilities (was mainstreamed) and regular emotional outbursts. Still was just a kid and wanted to participate in sports and really, really needed a friend or two. Didn't get them because of all the above.

10-Apr-24
"Fully agree. But also want to point out while rare , hermaphrodites do exist."

it is my understanding that there is a difference between being a "hermaphrodite" (intersex) and being "transgender." one is an actual physical deformity or condition...the other is a mental condition or how someone "identifies."

most people would be all for having sports and other activities for those born with birth defects...and they already do. they compete against others with the same...or similar conditions. i dont think anyone is saying that transgenders shouldnt have their own competitions...its just not appropriate...fair...or safe to have them all lumped in together.

imagine if someone "identified" as disabled and wanted to compete in the special olympics or paralympics? would/should either organization allow someone who just felt they were disabled compete against those that actually are?

is that really any different than allowing a male who "identifies" as a woman...compete against those who are actually female?

Americans are now less supportive of transgender athletes playing on the team of their choice than they were two years ago, a national survey found.

69% of Americans said transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete on sports teams that conform with their birth gender, per Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs poll conducted in May, compared to 62% in 2021.

Similarly, fewer people (26%) endorse transgender athletes being allowed to play on teams that match their current gender identity, down from 34%."

The choice, as I see it, is to live in a world of delusion and pretend, or live in the real world where common sense and reality exist. If they want to live a pretend life, then that's their choice, but they have no right to say that others have to go along with their pretend world.

I like how George Carlin once put it: "Guys got something for the girls, and the girls got something for the guys. If God had meant it to be any different, we'd all come with two sets of goodies."

You guessed it. The clerk was a trans, dressed in a dress, with pink and purple hair, and with a full beard.

They might the minority. But, the minority is force feeding their values to everyone. Due to absurd political policy. Everyone is negatively impacted.

I don’t care whose son is gay. Who here is gay. Or who you know is gay. What I do care about is teaching young children that there are limits to abide by when it comes to sexuality and how it’s expressed. That is stuff for home and private relationships. Not something you shove down everyone’s throat while you desperately look for vindication of your choices. Straight or gay. It doesn’t matter until the offenders start making it everyone’s business. The Cass study in the UK of thousands of Gender confused folks proves KS Flatlander wrong.

From Riley Gaines on Twitter today; The Biden Admin has just officially abolished Title IX as we knew it. Now, sex = gender identity.

In a nutshell, the new rewrite means: - men can take academic AND athletic scholarships from women - men will have FULL access to bathrooms, locker rooms, etc - men could be housed in dorm rooms with women - students and faculty MUST compel their speech by requiring the use of preferred pronouns

"Hilary Cass warned of threats to safety after ‘vile’ abuse over NHS gender services review"

"The doctor behind a landmark review of the NHS’s gender identity services for children and young people has said fears had been raised about her personal safety amid online abuse after the report’s release.

Dr Hilary Cass told the Times she wished to address the “disinformation” circulating about the findings and recommendations handed down by the Cass review when it was published on 10 April.

She said she had received online abuse in the wake of the report and had been advised to stop using public transport.

The report said the evidence base for gender medicine in young people had been thin and children had been let down by a “toxic” public discourse around gender."

*** "NHS England has since announced a second Cass review-style appraisal of adult gender clinics. Cass confirmed to the Times that she would not take part in the adult report after the abuse she suffered in recent weeks. She said: “You heard it right here: I am not going to do the adult gender clinic review.” ***
