So taking pictures this time of year mostly sucks. But this weekend ran into so interesting things. These first one I got up early and found some Osprey fishing for recently stocked trout this morning.

This one is from a week or so ago but shows the talons of the osprey. They are impressive birds.

The chukar might’ve escaped from a controlled shooting area if you have an area that plants birds for upland hunters nearby? Not 100% sure on a chukar’s range but I’m assuming you’re not too far southeast of their main range in Wyoming if one was determined to move a long ways? Cool shots! Osprey looks almost completely submerged

I don't know where there's a put and take bird spot in the area, but I'm guessing that's probably where it came from.

Great pix as always John, thanks for sharing...
Man, those Great Horned Owlets are ready to fledge already... Eclipse day watched a pair of Osprey break off tree branches for their nests so some are still in the nest building phase around here...
Chukars were imported (same as Ringnecks and Hungarian Partridge) so don't think they have a natural range in the U.S...

Beautiful birds. Osprey are cool. I didn’t know we had them in Alaska until I got on the Unalakleet River. They are everywhere on the river. Kind of weird being as far north as it is.

Osprey here migrate south annually, they don't seem to stay here during winter like some birds of prey, likely because of ice over... There is a manmade platform highly visible beside the interstate that a local pair utilize to nest and as soon after the juveniles fledge they seem to disappear from the area, and just noticed Friday one of the adults has returned... Photo taken July 17, 2023... If ever traveling I77 in Ohio, look up by the power lines at the Strasburg Exit 87 and you'll see the Osprey nest platform, it's active again this year...

Correct ZBone, I know Wyoming is a hotspot for “wild” chukar hunting, im just not sure how far southeast their “unnatural range” ranges

John, beautiful pictures, great detail. Private owned, Pen raised Chukars are used in formal hunting dog field trials. The two hunting and retriever clubs I belong to, use them, along with pheasants, here in Colorado and else where. Colorado CPW does not raise these birds for upland game hunting seasons, I know Wyoming does raise pheasants for release during their season.

Will you post a selfie in your weird little bird people outfit with the hat and converted fishing vest? They are all over down here in South Texas. One of them was trying to engage me in bird talk the other day when I was scouting for a fishing spot and I told her my deep interest in birds generally begins and ends in a turkey blind. She wasn't impressed.

I've been blessed to personally witness ospreys fishing, always leaves me in awe and just a bit jealous. The honorable wildlife "occifer" would write me a fat ticket if I got my trout that way! Anybody ever done in "trout tickling"....they frown on that too!

JohnMC, from wikipedia Trout tickling is the art of rubbing the underbelly of a trout with fingers. If done properly, the trout will go into a trance after a minute or so, and can then easily be retrieved and thrown onto the nearest bit of dry land. The trout in my neck of the woods were total prudes. I could never even "get to first base"!!
