Hello folks, we are traveling to Manitoba to have our first hunt with plum lake outfitters.

I’ll try to do updates daily on how my oldest son, Kolton, and I am Doing on our bear hunts.

I have killed several bears. Killed several very nice, 19.5” bears with my bow. Killed my first one last year with a rifle. He was almost 20”. Weighed 367 lbs.

We are archery on this hunt.

Thanks guys.

Thanks guys!

Well, it’s 4:00. I’m settled in the stand now. We will see what starts moving around.

A little bit info on my set up for those who are interested.

I’m shooting my new prime VRX. 80 lbs. 500 grain arrow. It’s a gold tip Kinetic 200 spine. tipped with a 125 slick trick magnum.

I’ve shot this set up For a long time. I love the slick tricks. But I truly hate their garbage packaging.

Should be a good hunt. Here’s the start of 1 sit out of 6. Thanks for joining me.

The bugs aren’t bad at all right now. However, today’s been really warm and the ticks are out and about. Tonight’s weather is warm but breezy. I’m sure that it will Cool Down Once the sun starts to go down though. It was about 32 Degrees this morning here. The wind my hose me on tonight’s sit. We’ll see

Kolton is around 5 or 6 miles away from Me And he has trash service. He’s been texting me on his ZOLEO. Which we just bought for this trip. And I love it a lot More than my Inreach.

My service is excellent here. Far better than at camp. Tonight might be the only time I get to update you guys this quickly. I hope you bear hunters enjoy the thread. It’s definitely a special Time Of year for me.

I take it the barrels were lying flat from the start. Any kind of height markers on trees? Did you bring your own extented bow hanger? To be able to send pics from your remote location is remarkable. I doubt there all like that.

From: DConcrete
05-May-24
The barrels were down when I got here.

I’d tell you to bring your own bow holder. Your own haul Line for your bow.

Safety harness. And a way to attach the safety harness to the tree.

Yeah other locations aren’t like this. My sons service is horrible where he is.

From: DConcrete

I’ll be in the same stand tonight as last night. So I should be able to update again.

I’ll let the outfitter tell his own stories of the other hunters. That won’t be my place.

Kolton didn’t see a bear last night. Which, isn’t unusual in my experience.

So here goes round 2 in about an hour. Thanks all you guys

I am settled back in the stand today.

Oh boy, is it windy today.

I spoke with Mikey the outfitter a few hours ago. We were supposed to go to a different location today.

I asked him what he thought of a suggestion I had. And that was, with weather conditions how they are, would we be better off to keep the new location fresh and just go hunt the same ones tonight.

He agreed with me that not polluting the new stands with scent, that we’d hit those areas tomorrow. The weather is good from here on out.

Fingers crossed guys!

Well, we went out to the new areas again today. It’s 12:12 as I post this.

It was by far the most eventful evening I’ve had here for sure. My evening started off with a sow and 2 cubs. Followed up by 3 different other bears. So I saw 6 bears tonight. The other 3 seemed to be boars to me. They were medium size bears. Not what I am looking for. But, it was still a fun sit.

Kolton on the other hand…..he saw 3 bears and decided enough was enough when a good, bigger mediums size bear came in at last light.

He sent me a text from his ZOLEO letting us know to take our time. I said, you have at least 40 minutes before we’re there.

Then he sent me another text letting me know he was certain his bear was dead from the noises.

We rode the 4 wheeler into the bait, and we began to look for blood to no avail. His arrow was covered in blood. Total pass through. So we start going in to where Kolton said the bear ran and he felt like he only went 50 yards. And it was in the thickest, crappiest stuff you can think of. Well, his estimate of 50 yards was pretty dang accurate and his bear was laying dead on the ground. A nice boar. Kolton is 25 and this is his 7th bear. Got it with his brand new RX-8

Alright so….I am all settled in for the last sit.

I spoke with Mikey this morning. I told him I felt like we needed to go back to our original stands.

I have to consider a few things for in the morning. Number one, where I was last night is 2 solid hours from camp. I have to be in the Winnipeg airport by 9:00 tomorrow. Flight is at 11:00.

Camp is just a touch over 2 hours from the airport. If I wound a bear tonight, that gives me no chance to go search tomorrow before I have to leave. Where as, at the closer bait, it’s 30 minutes to the bait. We could leave camp super early to Come look for a wounded bear. I am sitting at the bait where Kolton spent his first 3 nights.

A big bear did hit this last night at 8:20. Let’s hope he decided to not roam for just one evening.

So….here it goes.

As this thread starts to come to a conclusion, no the fat lady hasn’t sang yet…but I’d like to thank Mikey at plum lake.

I have hunted with Desjardins. I consider them friends and family. I have hunted with Craig McCarthy, I consider him a friend and family. And now with Mikey.

I appreciate everyone that’s ever had us along in Manitoba. When Covid hit, I had said my peace and I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to travel back. But with travel restrictions lifted last year, we made it back.

Any of the 3 outfitters I just listed, will Not steer you wrong on a Canadian bear.

As the evening was coming to a close, I was gathering my final Thoughts for the evening sit.

I could hear some very small branches breaking behind me. Knowing how the small bear exited, I had suspected a bigger one was coming.

As I stood there motionless, I could see the bear slowly approaching from my rear right side. I could see him Out of the corner of my eye.

He made his way slowly into the bait. Walking about 12’ away from me.

Light was fading fast for me. Legally, I still had 15 minutes. But between the canopy, and my changing eyes, I needed him to pick up the pace. Pretty soon he’ decides to turn off the trail and leave. Now I’ve seen bears do this a number of times at baits. Only to have them come back an hour or so later and kill them. Well, that wasn’t an option last night.

I knew I had to react fast and quietly. It was a super still night, and he was close. 15 yards maybe.

I had to grab my bow, Turn around because he’s on my right side. And I’m right handed. Draw my bow and shoot.

That’s exactly what I did. Got my bow back, Settled the pin swiftly. And let it go.

From: DConcrete
11-May-24
And this is the part where I ask, is everyone ready for the cold hard truth? Because bow hunting is full of them. At least for me.

My arrow connects with a loud crack. Now my arrows have a lot of energy. The bear drops and starts to roll around. I’m trying to get another arrow in him but he’s thrashing in the thick brush. I know the shot was awful.

The bears back end was paralyzed. He began to walk away by dragging his hind end.

Now I’m at a crossroads. Let him Go for the night? Or get out of the stand and try to get another in him? He’s not moving very fast.

So I make the choice, I’m gonna get down and try to get another in him.

His back end is totally out.

From: DConcrete
11-May-24
I climb down the tree, only to discover I can’t see anymore with the brush that’s up to your nipples. So I call and explain the whole Ordeal. He agrees to come get me. And we’ll come Back in the morning. As we are riding out of the bush, he and I are talking about the morning plans. I had until 7:30 at the very latest before I had to leave for Winnipeg.

We agreed to leave camp at 5:15 in the morning. Which is actually legal shooting time, give or take a minute or two.

We get up, have some coffee. Discuss some stuff. Politics, hunts, all of that. Then it’s time To get down to business. And this is where the hunt shifted from a bow hunt, to a, just get it done no matter what hunt.

We grabbed Mikey’s 7 mag and off we went. I had my bow already put away, bags ready for the flight, we gotta move our butts.

From: DConcrete
11-May-24
We get to the parking spot, unload his 4 wheeler. It has a dump bed on it. Plus a passenger seat.

Kolton hops in the bed, I’m in the passenger seat, and Mikey is taking us through the marsh to the bait.

As we’re going along, we get about 100 yards from the bait and Kolton starts saying, there’s a bear!! He can’t walk, that has to be him, he’s dragging his legs.

We look and sure as hell, there he is. And he’s trying to get away. So I grabbed the rifle. Settled it where the arrow should’ve gone, and dumped him.

From: DConcrete
11-May-24
We get the bear loaded up. By this time it was 6:00 in the morning. We are now sitting pretty for time.

We get back to camp, unload, take pictures, shake hands, say all of our thanks to Mikey, but most importantly to the God up above.

It was a fun week in Manitoba. It didn’t end as a bow kill. It was a rifle kill, but I don’t care about that. I got him, I wasn’t satisfied with my end with the bow, but I also know that I do my very best throughout the year to avoid what sometimes, is unavoidable.

I’ll Follow with the pics.

Kolton is my oldest of 7 kids.

In June, I take the family to Saskatchewan for a great bear hunt. I’ll be the last shooter on this one. It’s my 12 year old daughter’s turn. She’s killed a deer, and 2 turkeys. Now it’s time For a bear. My 18 year old daughter and my 17 year old son will be going as well. Also, my favorite partner in crime, my wife, Jamie. She’s my best friend and favorite hunting partner.

also, my good friend Russ Collard who owns and operates Mossback Nevada and Mossback Mexico will Be going with us. He’s hunting too but he’s going with me to help Me with my kids. Friends are hard to find like that.

I would guess my bear at 330 lbs.

Mikey green scored him for me at 19 4/16.

He had a lot of fat on his skull.

I have been around multiple Dead bears from 300-400 Lbs. I feel pretty confident in the 330 number. My daughter Marissa killed a nice bear last year that weighed 333. And my bear is twins to hers. Except…..hers net scored 19.5. Good for her! I always want my kids to beat dad!!
