I haven't been on here for a while. Bowsite has definitely changed over the years, but I'll try and contribute some actual hunting content. As usual Carcus and I are hunting spring bears in Manitoba. I can only hunt until the 24th as I go guiding for a month. My bait was empty after 10 days of the initial bait trip. I bought a Tactacam Reveal to help judge when I needed to rebait, I'm glad I did. Soon as I saw it was empty I drove up and rebaited. I'm not sure how many bears I have on bait right now, but probably 10, maybe more? Carcus' bait is a bit slower but as usual he has big bear sign, he's Mr. Automatic.... here are a few tc pics from my bait. Good luck to all the bear hunters!

I'm surprised I've ever killed a big bear after using a cell camera. I've had a few nice bears but they only showed a couple times and mostly at night. I'm sure it will work out this year, but psychologically the camera is giving me anxiety, ha!

Just from my personal experience. My bait has a sweet spot, May 15th - 30th. My ultimate favorite day is May 19th. I don't really think it's rut generated, but could be? Now other areas of the province I'd be choosing a different week. This is all from personal experience, so it might not be totally accurate.

When I walked in I bumped that obese bear off the bait, actually almost shot him on the ATV trail, but not ethical shot.
For the evening I saw around 6 bears come and go. At 2100 hours a really nice best came in. He would be close to 7 feet but he had a really small head. He came to the base of my tree to check him out. I actually drew on him. But decided to pass.

He got bored and decided to go back to the bait. As he was I heard the leaves rustling to my left and here he comes. "Ronald" the obese bear. He meets the pin head and they square off momentarily. Pin head moves on and Ronald walks to the close barrels at 20 yards. He didn't give me a shot and moved off a bit broadside. At full draw I let him have it. The bait looked good, but maybe a touch low. He ran off hard and I thought I heard him crash, but no death moan.

I climbed down and found my arrow coated in blood and a good blood trail. I followed it for about 80 yards and it was hard to find blood in the fading light. I met Carcus back at camp and told him the story. I wasn't feeling good about the shot, as I felt it was low.

I decided not to video this year, as I wanted to be present in the hunt. So, I couldn't review the footage. We got in the blood trail the next morning and had difficulty finding the trail. I decided to go in the direction of a overgrown ATV trail. I didn't have to go far and found him dead. He died on the run. Probably went around 150 yards, shot was great.

I’m just curious, no disrespect, but you guys actually pay attention to wind direction? Do you just not want the wind blowing at the bait but are ok with it going in the woods behind you, or is it blowing out to an opening or over a lake or something? Or just an area where you don’t think the bears will come from?

That was a great time, congrats on big heavy bear, I enjoyed the whisky a little too much back at camp but worth it! Hopefully I will have some luck next week, my bait is pretty slow so far but I did manage to pass on a pretty big chocolate and a decent black

Thanks everyone! Carcus is going to shoot a mega...Mike, we do pay attention to wind, as we have noticed that it makes a difference. We set up so our wind blows in an area we think the bears won't come from, at least the mature bears. He squared 7'2 and was really hefty, no scale so no idea on weight. I haven't measured the head yet. He was the smallest of the 3 shooters I had on my bait.

Im heading back out today for my second sit, the wind and my days off haven't been aligning until now. Its been 10 day since we baited, hope its not empty, we filled 5 55gal drums completely full with corn, it should be ok as my bait was a bit slow
