What the heck, must be a misunderstanding... seems out of character for him. scentman

From: Scoot
17-May-24
What a total debacle. Appears to be a complete misunderstanding. Scheffler apparently didn't understand what he was supposed to do and it appears he thought the cop was part of golf course security. Scheffler definitely screwed up, but it sounds like once he stopped things escalated super quickly and he had no idea what was happening. Maybe some video will prove my interpretation wrong, but that's what I see in reading the tea leaves with this deal.

I have no doubt he didn't do anything intentionally wrong or illegal. But, his misunderstanding sure caused him a hell of a lot of problems. I'll be curious to hear his press conference after his round. There'll be a million questions... Unbelievable how he responded to this huge mess. I can't play like that under perfect conditions, let alone after getting "cuffed and stuffed"!

From: fdp
17-May-24
The best thing for him to do at this point in his press conference is talk bout golf. He likely did just make a mistake but letting the press litigate it isn't going to help him.

From: Trying hard

Yes he's talking in front of the cameras right now 2:50 CST. I'm hoping it was a misunderstanding...

They should handle the same way as campus protesters that assault cops: arrest, release no bail and no prosecution.

From: Scoot
17-May-24
4nolz, I agree! However, the protesters aren't really impacted by the court of public opinion on the matter. For Sheffler, that will probably impact him to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in sponsorship money!

I predict that was a misunderstanding/screw up by Sheffler that blew up into a huge deal and got so far the wrong direction before he ever knew anything was happening that he couldn't fix it. That being said, I've been wrong before...

Just a confusing situation all around, and I’m sure Scottie had no idea what was going on or even that those were actual police, and I’m sure the police really had no clue about the golf tournament logistics and were focused on the traffic accident and fatality. Wouldn’t be surprised if the charges weren’t dropped by the end of the weekend.

From: scentman

It still looked to be dark out and it is confusing when traffic is moving especially with a major tournament is in progress... can't imagine him being that much of a jerk if he knew the situation. scentman

Scoot I may be way off but I'm not sure he makes hundreds of millions with endorsements. It may impact him a little but it was a cop so no one will care.

looks like a big misunderstanding. scheffler was confused as to what he was supposed to do at an accident site.

i see a 9 hole beer summit in scottys future. :)

So politics are a no go on Bowsite but golf is? Hmm got it.

From: Scoot
17-May-24
4nolz- no certainly not today. But something like a felony could have a multiple decade long impact on the career of a guy who looks to have multi-decade potential to dominate golf. He may be the best ball striker ever and stands to make over a billion dollars in his career (winnings and endorsement money). He's also got a squeaky clean record and image and a felony could change that dramatically.

I’m a big fan of the police, but in this case sounds like maybe they missed the mark a little. During my forensic analysis (reading a USA Today article), it said the officer attached himself to the vehicle (huh?), and was dragged such that his pants were damaged beyond repair. Fully acknowledge that my inquiry may be incomplete. But for what it’s worth, I think they should just buy him a new pair of pants and call it even.

Went through a similar experience several years ago but was not arrested. Was coming through KC I-435 early morning and the PD had road flares out that were conflicting directions, I was to go on the off ramp to detour, the flares went pass and wide from the exit. A cop waved me down and stop and told him the confusion his buddy was standing far back and came running swearing at me. I remain calm and the first cop got him settle down, my friend that was riding with me yelled at the mouthy cop he needed to go back to school to setting up road flares, that went south real fast, but we got out of there. It seems there is always one cop that wants to escalate a situation before knowing the facts. Told my friend next time to be still but he has a hard time with load mouth fat bullies, he is a retired firefighter and just got back playing in a senior 65+ rugby tournament in New Zealand, just giving his background.

17-May-24
I think that “dragged” is an exacturation. If you latch on and don’t let go is a “self inflicted” dragging. If you are lassoed and experience being drug along is a different matter.

What really happened? I don’t think Scottie attached the officer to his vehicle and refused to let him go.

I believe that the facts will show “confusion” by all parties involved and a sensible judge will understand the chaos that was occurring in the early morning matters.

I would imagine Scottie was pressed for time and full of anxiety. The officer was also full of anxiety from the earlier accident/death.

All and all a horrible way to start any day.

Scotty and his caddy like to hang out in the caddy area at the Phx Open. It is off limits to the spectators. We just chit chat and hang out. Super cool guys. When he said he was stretching in his jail cell I about lost it laughing.

No clue on anything about him but I’ll speculate he thought it was tournament security and wasn’t really paying much attention to someone waving him to stop. Guessing he’s gonna make a few payments and things will be just fine.

Timmy- my guess is you don't know squat about this topic. Recurve- I'm guessing your last sentence is spot on.

19-May-24
i can totally understand how this might have happened.

years ago i approached an accident scene where a cop was directing traffic with a flashlight. the guy in front of me proceeded when he thought the cop motioned for him to do so (i thought he was motioning for us to proceed also)...only to have the cop step in front with his vehicle both arms stretched forward...screaming at him to stop.

i didnt hear everything the cop was yelling but the guy definitely got an ear full. nobody was dragged or arrested but it was a tense situation for sure.

accident scenes can be very confusing...especially when its dark and raining.

From: bigeasygator
19-May-24
Layer in the fact that Scottie didn’t even realize these were cops. There are loads of volunteers and security around an event like this. The cops had on yellow vests and the pics I’ve seen look like there were lots of unmarked cars. I’m sure he’s operating under the assumption these are tournament staff - even with the increased presence because of the accident. Like you said Ricky, a massively confusing scene ripe for misunderstanding. The incident leading up to the arrest is a big nothing burger.

From: W
19-May-24
Between this situation and the Tiger Woods accident with a tournament loaner car, it’s time the PGA no longer allow their talent to drive during these tournaments. Maybe get their caddy to drive?

19-May-24
One of my closest friends knows Scottie very well. Says he is as first class, humble and respectful as any one he has ever known despite his success in life. Apparently he didn’t even pull the “ do you know who I am card”. Having recently been in almost the same situation with a major accident at night, lots of people yelling, flashing lights and chaos I almost screwed up. And I wasn’t thinking about getting to my job and winning a major championship on national TV or my newborn baby. Hopefully this will clear quickly and not sully this fine young man’s reputation.

From: drycreek
19-May-24
Obviously, none of us were there, so we don’t know all the facts. But….even if the officer thought that Scottie was in the wrong, why in hell would you hang onto a car ? That’s just stupid ! Get the plate number and go arrest him. Hanging onto a moving car only gets you hurt or dead. If I had to guess, I’d say this was an aggressive police officer and a confused driver. I think I heard Fox say this morning that they were dropping the charges, but I just caught a little of it as I was walking through the living room and as we had family in for the weekend I wasn’t paying too much attention.

You heard that right, drycreek. Sounds like it’s trending in that direction. Like I said, I wouldn’t have been surprised if they were dropped by the end of the weekend. Sounds like it’s imminent and that wouldn’t be surprising at all.

The day of, straight from the horses mouth I watched ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington who witnessed Scotie's arrest say the cop grabbed onto the car and held on for about 20 yards... Don't know if he really meant 20 feet or 20 yards, but that is what he said on the clip I watched...

From: bigeasygator

bigeasygator's Link
Not sure if the link will work to an instagram post but it’s a zoom in of the Scheffler arrest video that was released today. A lot of it is obscured but definitely don’t see anyone getting dragged in this one. If it happened prior to this off camera maybe that explains the cops reaction. Otherwise it looks like a total overreaction from the police.

23-May-24
i dont see any dragging either...however it was just announced that "corrective action" has been taken against the cop for not turning on his body warn camera...and the charges against scheffler arent going to be dropped...yet.

From: Zbone
23-May-24
Yeah, I don't see any dragging there either... Cop runs up from behind and bashes at his window... That's BS, I bet Scotie freaked... I know I would have had somebody bashed on the side of my window... I respect LEOs, I wouldn't want their jobs especially now days, but these cops with 500 pound badges need to be kept in line by their superiors... If they don't drop the charges, that's more BS...

Now makes me wonder what Darlington actually saw or he was just reporting what somebody else told him... If he was reporting hearsay, that ain't right either... I probably should know better than believe anybody in the media these days....

From: bigeasygator
23-May-24
They’ve said there was no video of the initial interaction…so presumably it happened between then and what you actually see on video? Also makes you question the need for the officer’s “hospitalization” as well…

From: fdp
23-May-24
" If they don't drop the charges, that's more BS..."ain't nobody here knows if that is or isn't true. If he didn't obey the directions of the officers on scene then they should no more drop the other charges against him against then they would any other person. They should not for any reason drop any other legitimate charges just because this incident made it on the news and because he is a "celebrity" UNLESS they would do the same for another person in the same situation.

23-May-24
"They should not for any reason drop any other legitimate charges just because this incident made it on the news and because he is a "celebrity" UNLESS they would do the same for another person in the same situation."

i agree. i would hope they would give him the same consideration they would give any other person...with no prior incidents (assuming thats the case)...given all the same circumstances. they shouldnt let him off just because hes well known...nor should they stick it to him just because hes well known.

It's not because he is a celerity and should get special treatment over any Joe-Smo to drop charges, Scotie is "charged with felony second-degree assault on a police officer", I don't see anywhere in any of the release videos there is any kind of an assault...

This is a clusterFxxx, it's a he said, she said, see linky: https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/23/us/scottie-scheffler-arrest-update-louisville/index.html

"Louisville police release videos of Scottie Scheffler’s arrest and discipline detective for not activating body-worn camera"

The cop's version: “While directing traffic in front of Gate 1 the PGA personnel stopped a bus from entering Gate 1,” he wrote. “I observed a vehicle traveling in the opposing lanes coming at me. I stopped the driver and advised him he could not proceed because of the bus. He demanded to be let in, and proceeded forward against my directions. I was dragged/knocked down by the driver. I then proceeded to arrest the driver.”

"Multiple eyewitnesses have said Scheffler “did not do anything wrong” but drove as directed, according to Romines"

“He stopped immediately upon being directed to and never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle,” the statement reads"

"ESPN’s Jeff Darlington witnessed the encounter and filmed part of it. When Scheffler arrived in a marked player courtesy vehicle, he tried to drive around the crash scene on a median, according to ESPN. Darlington wrote on social media that Scheffler “continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance” before stopping"

“The police officer attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to Valhalla,” Darlington wrote on X. “The police officer then began to scream at Scheffler to get out of the car. When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.”

From: fdp
23-May-24
Zbone.....just curious but are you familiar enough with the statutory description of criminal offenses in Kentucky to recognize 2nd degree assault on a police officer if you witnessed it? "“The police officer attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car, "...whoever wrote that is either delusional, or making things up. How would the officer have attempted to "attach himself" to Schefflers car? A rope, magnet, steel cable? I would say what the officer did was place his hand on the door.

And the witnesses saying he didn't do anything wrong is just their opinion from their perspective. They don't really know because they weren't in the car with him. As I said before...I hope it is a misunderstanding and the whole thing goes away, but I don't know all the details either.
