My friend asked about a good starter bow for a 6 year old bow, who is very tall for his age. Ideas?

I think the best bow to start a kid off on is a recurve bow. Personally I find it more satisfying shooting that than a compound although I shoot both. If he/she can shoot a recurve accurately then a compound will be cake. Also think about a compound you need to teach a 6 year old form and all that but a recurve they just pull it back and release and have fun with it. Just my .02

I myself started with one of those fiberglass recurves sold at KMart back in the day... blister pack with glove, 3 arrows with target points, 3 paper targets and yrs of fun past down to my younger brother. scentman

Yup. Recurve and some arrows. A hay bale and balloons. Keep it as fun as possible.

I started both my nephews at 5 with a cheap plastic bear recurve. They are now using the genesis bow which works fantastic for both of them.

Started my Granddaughters 7 and 9 on youth recurves 3 years ago , both love shooting , any arrow off the bow is a great shot even if it misses the target , praise praise praise and short sessions .

Good idea on the ballon! I love shooting balloons when I was not a kid:)
What poundage for the bow? Something he can grow into as he gets stronger but still shoot now.

The important thing to remember is to make it fun and not a struggle. A little lighter is always better so they can develop good form and maintain proper posture. I bought both of my girls longbows from Joe St. River, and they loved them. They still use them 5 years later, even though they need to step up in poundage. The hours they've spent shooting and having a good time was well worth the investment.

I would say that a kid would need to be closer to 10 or 12 to get something to grow into. That’ll be hard to find for a 6yo. I got mine a little bear recurve at that age.

I used/am using the Diamond Infinite Edge bows for my kids. Only weighs 3.1 lbs (without accessories) and is adjustable (without any tools besides an allen wrench) from 5-70 lbs and 13-30 inches for draw length. I bought used on Craigslist. Got one for $50 with everything including a case, release, and arrows. Good enough quality to hunt with until they want to upgrade, assuming they stick with it.

Diamond bows are great for kids. First one I bought my son when he was 5 was a Diamond Atomic. He is 13 now and it will be passed down to his 7 year old sister. I bought my 9 year old daughter a Hoyt Kobalt last Christmas. That one is probably too big for a 6 year old though.

There’s nothing wrong with a compound at 6. My oldest started on a hand me down at 5 and bought herself a hoyt ruckus at 7. She shot a few does at 8/10 and her first buck at 11. Still using the ruckus at 15. Currently I’d buy a Diamond.
