That's how I found the current spot we elk hunt. Went solo archery hunting in 2020 and drove out 2 days early to scout and fish. Wasn't having much luck scouting but did have a plan for opening morning. So I decided to do some fishing. The fishing place I had tried led me to seeing several elk. Didn't get an elk that year but learned a lot. Been taking the rifle back since then. I love the fishing, even though they are all little what I catch

Fish that size are too much fun on a fly rod! Really took me by surprise. We’ve only ever seen 12/13 and the occasional 14 incher on this water.

Make sure you eat your limit of the Bonus Brookies where that applies… They get a lot bigger when they’re not so thick….

GREAT thread Dave! At first I thought it was another wild bot-ulism post.....so much better it was not! I love catching and eating brookies.....but fly fishing is too much work.....all I do is tie and untie knots and crap...instead I just use an ultralight. :)

I will never forget in 2010 my buddies and I drew 39 and went up to about 10K below Mt. Evans. There was a huge flat with a creek full of brookies running at least a mile or more. My buddies brought fishing licenses and ultra lites...even though we were there for elk. They caught a dozen or so one afternoon and we wrapped them in tinfoil with olive oil, salt and pepper then cooked them directly on the coals. WOW.....never had such an amazing fish meal....meat just melted off the bone. Best of times.

I’ve been packing a 5-piece 4 wt rod this year too. It’s perfect for those peaceful moments on the water. Last month, I was scouting a new spot and took a break to drift some flies. Ended up catching a few trout that made the day. I checked out FiskFrisk for the best fishing spots near me, which pointed me to some great locations. It's amazing how a little research can lead to finding new favorite spots. How’s your scouting been going? Any new places you’re excited about?

Just got back from hanging my treestand and some other preseason chores. Took a couple hours break and did some fishing. I see a brookies, pancakes, and eggs breakfast in the very near future!
