My hunting buddy and I are headed west from NC to the Gila for his early archery elk hunt. Our normal plan is to stay fairly close to our destination the last night of travel, arise early and hit the grocery store for supplies. Unfortunately, the nearest city with a descent grocery appears to be Albuquerque. We stayed on the west side in 2015 in what we first thought would be a safe hotel/location only to be awakened at 3 in the morning with cops handling a domestic near us. So, not wanting a repeat, we need some advice on safe/secure locations around or near there. We have stayed in Santa Rosa but it's a bit farther from our destination than we would like to be for the last leg of the trip. Thanks for any help.

Stay away from anything close to I-40. We always stay somewhere near Paseo or in the nearby area. Most cities have decent grocery stores. Why not go a little further and stay in Socorro, Los Lunas, etc. I’ve never had a problem staying on the north side of Albq. Staying in the other cities also depends on which way you are going into the Gila. I stay a lot at Homewood suites which I believe is off Alameda.

Been to Socorro for training several times. Nice holiday inn express there, s big Wal Mart and several resturants.

Never had any issues in the town or the Hotel.

Definitely stay in Socorro area vs Albq. Pick up some green chilies and other fresh vegetables and fruit at the road side (Rosales Produce) stand on the north side of town/east side of the highway. Good luck on your hunt!

Sadly, not much is safe in Abq these days. When I lived there a few years ago, it was the per capita #1 spot in the US for home burglaries, car theft, and about 8 other criminal activities. That's a long way from the Gila anyway. I would try Socorro or T or C.

Last year I stayed little south near airport and there where a few options for hotels and food. Socorro not to far if its early enough

If you get a chance head to San Antonio, NM and eat at the Owl Bar, pretty cool place

Stay in Belen across the interstate from the Loves truck stop it is a nice hotel and safe or the Comfort Inn just north of Socorro. I wouldn’t stay near ABQ if they gave me the room free!

When my brother drew a unit 36 bull tag I flew in and stayed at the baymont airport hotel at the eld of the trip before heading home. Was a decent place that had friendly people. Buffalo wild wings across the street

g5smoke21 you didn’t have a pickup and a bunch of hunting gear sitting outside. ABQ is the theft capital of America !!! I had a pickup truck stolen in broad daylight from a hotel in the same area as the Baymont.

We drove to Mesa back in February. The area law enforcement told us Edgemont was safe. I know that is east of what you asked but we had no trouble.

Socorro isn’t bad. I’ve stayed a few times when recruiting at NM Tech, as well as while oryx hunting.
