What's a good rain jacket / pant that doesn't break the bank? Preferably quiet.
Cabelas “Space Rain”. I assume you’ll have several after me with the same recommendation.
Space Rain is great for light duty like an afternoon squall in the mountains if that's what you're looking for.
Space Rain for me as well. It’s compact and lightweight, so there’s never an excuse not to carry it with you.
I’ve had space rain gear for well over 20 years now. I only pull it out when absolutely necessary. I never really walk around in it unless moving slow because it will make you sweat a lot! I usually hunker down under a big full pine and wait out those quick rainstorms. It works great for those long drenching storms when you don’t move much.
Space rain for me. I haven’t compared its noise levels to other rain gear so I can’t comment on that. I feel as though the little noise it makes would typically be covered by the sound of rainfall if it ever got to the point of mattering. For the price point it gets my stamp of approval.
Rivers West is good rain gear for stand hunting. Might be too heavy for a lot of walking.
I went on the Cabela's website and the space rain is on clearance, discontinued maybe? They only offered the jacket in a medium. And there's no hood?
Grunden’s Neptune jacket & bibs.
Man that’s rare to get that much agreement on one piece of gear
Space Rain is a good product. Lots of good Cabelas self-branded products came out in the 2000s. Shame if BP lets this one go but no surprise.
Lower to middle range end rain gear is great when it’s not raining. Never underinvest in rain gear. The 200.00 -300.00 you save won’t keep you dry. Kind of like boots. Save elsewhere.
I’ve used my Space Rain in some pretty wet weather and been totally dry on the back end. I wouldn’t take it to Alaska but for mule deer or elk hunting in the western lower 48 it’s hard to beat.
Buckeye, that’s a possibility. I live near Springfield Missouri and am in town often for school and usually swing by the Bass Pro Outlet once a month at a minimum. Last fall they had TONS of space rain in the outlet store, hundreds of pairs. I assumed they were dumping old stock or maybe had a run that was slightly off on sizing or QC turned away for whatever reason, but they might have been dumping stock to come out with a 2nd version?
I’d be shocked if they discontinue it. It’s a hot seller that is constantly involved in rain gear discussion even against the higher end rain gear, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they were wanting to release an updated model. Only time will tell.
LUNG$HOT x2. I have some heavier duty rain gear, but because it’s heavier and bulkier, I left it out of my pack more times than not. A couple times I later greatly regretted that decision. Because it takes up very little space, and is feather light, my Space Rain never leaves my pack. The most expensive rain gear won’t keep you dry if you don’t have it with you.
Space gear is good stuff. The closet thing I’ve found in packable and weight, are the latest version of us surplus rain gear. It’s a lot tougher than the space gear. Maybe an ounce heavier, and packs very minimally larger. Doesn’t saturate like the space gear stuff either.
I get it. I like my space gear. I pack it every hunt unless it’s favored to rain or raining. Just saying I own the issue stuff and it’s a great product. Better in every way except packable. But, they are close on that. It’s a tough suit that you can move around in with no fear of ripping the Shell. So, if you can’t find the space gear, it’s a great alternative.
I have the space rain as well. It works well in mild to moderate rain, but you will get soaked in a prolonged downpour. A previous bear hunt proved that. Saw some in the Columbus Cabelas store not long ago. They had lots of it in stock.
Space Rain and my umbrella/walking stick are all I ever need (I like to go compact and light as possible).
I'll go to Cabela's and see if they have any , there's one not to far from my house. Need some mountain House anyway.
“Need some mountain House anyway.“
Another bit of advice. Peak Refuel blows MH out of the water as far as flavor and quality. Trust me on this one.

@lungshot, Heathers Choice is another good option
Thanks Jordan, I found that already but the jacket only comes in medium or at least that's the only thing available to choose online. I need a large or XL.
We were hunting elk in a wilderness last year and it started raining about 7:30 and didn’t stop all day. I had some KUIU rain gear on and the other guys had a mix of cheaper rain gear. They were all soaked to the bone that day. I was the only one that stayed dry. It rained so much our packs were soaked through. They all bought quality rain gear that winter. That day thought me a big lesson about rain gear and a waterproof cover for my pack. I don’t leave now without a small towel and a dry pair of socks in a waterproof bag in my pack if there is any chance of rain.
Anyone use Peter Storm rain gear?
