Grabbed some cams this am. The pics are from one 1/2 mile from camp on a closed skid road where a tiny creek crosses......always delivers elk. Now some decent bulls are showing. They were not so active below near my stand sites.....but elk come and go. I know from 2022 they will be thick in there later during season. Hope to test hang one stand this evening then the other tomorrow.....then check the swamp cams up the hill on the wallow. Hoping to see some activity with the wallow. Still velvet on some here.....not seeing fresh rubbed trees or wallow use yet. Lots of time left.....but it will be here asap and over before we know it......

Hey Jordan you might keep an eye out for a cow moose without a calf. I know a couple of NRs with cow tags that might appreciate some info if you see anything.
This should be a great hunt for you, good luck. Oh, bear activity in White Rock last week. They are getting active too looking for food. Be careful with your camp food.

Thx ALL for the kind words and encouragement. Wytex, will do on both. Bear shit from a week or so ago right next to where I set up my tent last night.
Went scouting the creek spot for ground blinds and tree stand sites. Found what I think us a Beauty of a tree stand site 30 yards from the action.

Another tree I could use is 40 yards from the creek right along the skid road.

View of my primary tree from the other side. Good shooting lanes out to 30 yards either side. At least from ground view. Will run the gear down later and try it out for real. Excited for this spot.

I have it so I can shoot left or right as that is the setup....I am right handed and shooting to the left with a tree strap will be challenging but doable. The idea is to catch them coming before they reach the skid road........so the stand is positioned for that perfectly. Plus this is just for the first several days then I will be mostly on the ground I expect, calling and moving on bulls who respond.

I ran back this am to the bull area that is 4-5 football fields of swampy hillside covered in sporadic timber and open spots with wallows to grab cams. I had them on the main wallow. Wallow had no activity other than next to it was churned up. One cam closest was set to video. Will see if I can view on my computer, got error when tried to view on my phone. The other cam was 25 yards away and pointed right at the wallow. Not much on it, mostly night shots and I could not discern any animals on my phone view. Of course, 15 yards directly behind that cam was a fresh churned up wallow started. Go figure.

Jordan, just be patient and there’s no doubt you’ll kill your elk out of that stand. It may not happen the first day, but give it time. Running and gunning on the ground is certainly fun, but in your stand the odds are in your favor, not the elk’s. This is the year you’ll ”get ‘er done!”

Jordan, I really respect you forbthe effort you're putting into scouting this great unit. Right now the interweb hunting forums are filled with posts like, "I drew a tag in unit X and have never been there. Can anyone tell me a good place to start hunting?"
From: bowyer45

It's not by accident that 10% of the hunter's kill 90% of the elk. Looks like heavy packs are in your future.

Hey Lou, I am NOT above asking folks a few questions....although I have learned over time to do it on the down low and not out on the forum posts.......but I also like searching the interweb for folks who do post up nice intell to follow up on. I had a head start from when I scouted this unit for my buddy and his son when they drew the same tag in 2022. Just building on a foundation.
