I'm sure the idiots will chime in saying the kid did not belong there, the lion was only doing what lions do, blah blah blah. Common sense is gone in todays world.

terrible. Large predators and humans dont mix well. Hope the kid ends up ok.. Sounds like they will heal, but the longer term injuries are more worrisome. Poor kid.

Kids get attacked by coyotes here in SoCal. Last one was while they at the beach. Another one was at a cemetery. Idiot people here get upset that the animals are killed. Then there’s always those that say that’s what happens from building on their home. Most of SoCal is arid land and not a whole lot of food in most of it for them. Yet in cities there are packs of well fed coyotes from pets and garbage. The other part of that is why they don’t get that they blame others for building homes but they are exempt. I better stop before I get ramped up about citiots.

John, I'm not saying the child should not have been there, but a family picnic means the cougar smelled food from miles away, children at picnics are slathered in all kind of tasty smells the cat just saw an easy meal... thank God for the heroic actions of family members.

scentman, a cat hunts with his eyes and ears, they can’t smell their own asses. A canine hunts with his nose. Either way, animals that aren’t hunted harbor no fear of humans. You can bet the coyotes in East Texas won’t come into my yard. On my 80 acres out back, yep, but not in the 5 that surrounds my house. It’s too close to coyote hell, or wherever they go.

Cats can't smell as well as canines. Cats still smell pretty decent. I've observed my cat scent trailing deer mice in windbreak many times. I've seen him stop dead in his tracks if he scents meat or an animal I've killed . Observed similar with barn cats growing up in the country many times. They definately often scent things.
Also twice glassed and watched bob cats sniff around in washes a couple times in southern Arizona. I have no doubt cats can smell and use it as a hunting aid. Agree vision and hearing are primary tools.

My two cats sure can tell when I go get chips from cupboard or bologna from the fridge, they on me before I get the mayonnaise on the bread ;0) Did take note of your post drycreek and you are likely correct... but that cat must have been very hungry! scentman
