Damn shame.

Even if they had “successfully” poached and recovered the deer, did they not think it would be obvious that it was killed before season with the obviously bulbous antlers? Maybe I’m giving the poachers the benefit of the doubt in regard to their logical reasoning ability…

That’s a shame. Terrible that the investigation was botched.

Surprised nobody has claimed it was a crossbow yet.

This whole scenario sounds odd. Wanton waste by throwing the carcass in a landfill & just keeping the head.

Damn, that stinks!

That Deputy must have been a DEI hire.

That happens here all the time. In fact in my county they had police officers and game wardens caught in a placing ring several years ago.

Poaching not placing.

You want to know how much they teach you about game laws in most police academies. ZERO.

Also I would like to know how they would have saved the deer for evidence. I highly doubt they had a freezer back at the SO big enough for a whole deer.

Even if they just took the hindquarter I doubt that deputy is going to process the deer to salvage the evidence in uniform. I know I sure an hell wouldn't have. Uniforms are expensive, and we had to buy our own.

Also, you cannot just leave it in the yard until game and fish find the time to show up. There are chain of custody issues, etc.

In 28 years never had a case like this, but I would have loved to see the look on my supers face if I would have said, DNR isn't available to handle the case, I am going to load the deer into my car and bring it in to the SO as evidence.

It was years before I knew in WI you could only give car tags out for deer. Any other animal such as turkey, bear, Coyote or deer with velvet antlers had to go through DNR and you had to actually pay for the tag. That may have changed by now, but the only way I learned it was just BS with a DNR warden. They never taught it in the academy.

I will say this, I hope the deputy at least called his super to ask what to do. If he knew he had a crime and the agency responsible for the investigation wasn't available that was at least the minimum he should have done.

Just curious, had it been a human body how long would they have let it lay there and bloat in the sun?

I would have thought the Deputy would have been smart enough to call Fish and Game since it’s a deer.

Zone,

I been on scene for hour's with a doa. It all depends on the medical examiner, how complicated the scene is to process, how long it may take to get warrants etc. On natural deaths I have waited 5 hour's for an ME to shown up in the middle of summer.

Spike,

If I read the article correctly it said fish and game were out of town, both of them, so the deputy responded.

Zone,

Your welcome.

bg, was the horse pretty ?

Maybe I’m the only one that thinks this, but it is no less a shame if it had been a doe. I look at it as wasted meat, not a big buck. Poaching is poaching and assigning values to different animals is assinine IMHO. Poachers should be fined heavily, then spend a little time in the stout house. Maybe then they wouldn’t do it anymore.

Without a necropsy they really do not have any idea how it was killed.
