All the Weather Channel could do is talk about Tallahassee when radar showed on iously where is was hitting.WC makes $ on hysteria they'll forget about these rural counties by Monday.

They are saying 2 weeks for power restoration

29-Sep-24
Wow. That’s horrible Mike.

I’ve got no power. Saying it’s going to be end of the week or so. It’s because it’s rural. A lot of lines spread out here. The wind and the fact we had gotten about 5-6” of rain on Wednesday-Thursday really loosened the ground. 75-80% canopy cover. Just a result of conditions.

We see wind like that from time to in bad storms. However, conditions were right for the bizarre. If not for that, it’d just been flash flooding that we routinely see in coal field Appalachia.

You guys are in our prayers.

A couple regional areas got hit but, 20 miles east it was thunderstorm weather. As it progressed southwest it gets worse.

I feel so bad for all the folks who are affected. Prayers sent.

At one time, my wife and I considered buying a place on Sanibel Island. We're glad we didn't because it got destroyed by Ian. Now, we have no desire to own on the Gulf Coast. It seems the hurricanes have gotten much more frequent, and we don't think it's worth the risk anymore.

In 2004 Charlie went through Naples. Leveled all the trees on the opposite side of the road from us and our side of the street was more or less untouched. Insurance company dropped us as they decided to get out of Florida. Sold that house in 2008 and never thought of going back. The devastation those storms bring is difficult to imagine, without seeing it.

I talked to one of my buddies down there. He was in the storm path but it just jinked a little to the west and it missed him by about 20 miles. He said that near Asheville, they are finding bodies stuck up in trees. It is basically erased. I used to go fishing down on the Wilson Creek just South of Blowing Rock. I was told that the whole valley was scoured. I don't know if any down there made it out. Prayers for them all. JayG

I’ve seen videos of people videoing the surge coming. I’m sure they made it because the video was posted. But, it went from normal to 3-4 high in seconds. People were hollering for their lives. It is terrible. My guts turned watching it.

Talked to my brother over the phone last night for 2 hrs, he's preparing to go up into the devastated areas to render help... chain saw, food, water, make meals for survivor's and helpers alike. My brother works with the Red Truck Men who I have mentioned before on this site, he told me about bodies being found under plywood, tree branches and cars... he said they were opening roads as fast as they can just to get living essentials... his boss just purchased a brand new F-350, trailer, and 3 Blackstone grills... told Lance to load up at get up there, he's driving as I write this and can't be more proud of my little brother!

Justin, the surge/water is the most damaging and deadly part of these storms.

My sister, in Asheville, will be making her way down here tomorrow. She hasn't really wanted to talk about it much, other than to say that it's bad, really bad. The best part of my weekend was finally hearing from her on Saturday and knowing that they were alive and as well as could be.

02-Oct-24
I bet Bob. I’m pretty certain some of the people exposed to the worst of this Will have PTSD. They are going to be finding dead people until the clean up is over. Which will be years. And, I’m pretty certain they won’t find all the missing people. It really messes with the mind of those who live in it. And those literally bleeding, working till exhaustion, and sold out helping residents with these tasks.

From: Mike E

,,,,"PTSD",,,, I'm afraid it's going to be generational what with such destruction on the scale that I've seen on TV which is just a small portion of the total. Some gal was found aways from her home still clutching her mom who she was trying to save. It just brings you to tears. It took 5 days for the Army to be activated,,jeez, they are the only ones equipped to get in there ,, that is just as sad. Those poor folks are in such a bad way and so worried that they are going to be forgotten,, to have that feeling is on it's own just tragic. They have a good point though, with what's in the news, Israel, election crap, Long shoreman striking, I guess they should be worried. I truly hope not.

We have people affected by the Maui fires that got very little help from the government.

We have people that were affected by the train derailment in East Palestine with little help from the government.

Now we have people affected by Helene in NC, GA and TN with little help from the federal government.

We have sent billions to Ukraine. We gave FEMA spending money on helping illegals and now it comes out they are out of money to help US citizens.

With 10+ million illegals in the country in the last 4 years and we can’t figure out that it’s a simple supply and demand crisis on housing.

Bottom line is half the country voted for this crap and the same half of the country will vote for more of it.

I hate to be a dick but if you voted for this and are affected by these disasters and don’t change the way you vote I don’t feel sorry for you. It’s the ones that didn’t vote for this and are affected that my heart goes out to.

Send billions all over the country but when we need something it's "figure it out assh*les". Western NC and Eastern TN will never be the same. The devastation is unimaginable. 03-Oct-24
No doubt. This is a mess. Work crews setting 75 strong until noon or later before they can get orders. Tree services that are setting waiting when there are literally miles and miles and miles and miles of damaged line that needs cut out. Tree crews that aren’t cutting right of ways but claiming they did.

For 5 days I’ve watched hundreds of crews, every morning from 8-1 pm or so play football. Frisby. Layed out in lawn chairs. Tree crews too. Until AEP staff is getting them going.

I literally have been looking at my neighbors for 5 days with power. I’m still in the dark. I literally showed the tree crew the offending tree. AEP official as well. It’s still hung up there with lines tore loose. 25’ into the right of way.

This is the laziest, most unorganized rescue effort I’ve ever witnessed or been a part of. It is alarming pathetic.

I’ve had work crews arguing over who was too blame for not fixing power that’s been out, and been 20’ from the road. I’ve seen residents literally ready to loose their shit over watching the same things I’m seeing. And, a bunch of us all over the place are still setting in the dark. And half of those are watching neighbors within a 1/2 acre living like normal since Saturday.

AEP crews of 20 years ago would have handled this mostly local. They would have had it fixed every where by now. And you wouldn’t have seen them chilling making literally thousands plus per day setting on their ass while people are suffering. Not that anyone here is. But, I’ve seen plenty that are in these other places. And, this is what AEP considers a good effort.

Someone should answer for this alone. We can’t get men or administration to work. When they do they aren’t working together. And, when work is completed, it’s not done. There are literally thousands in the above described predicaments.

I hope and prey that these others areas are receiving much more professional and dedicated responders in all areas and capacity they are needed.

Pray about it fellas.

I grew up in Homestead,Florida yea remember Andrew and Mountain City,Tennessee as my father was in the produce business and farming so it was Florida in the winter Tn. in the summer .When Helene came into the mountains after another system had already dumped 10 inches of rain it created a Perfect Storm. Some places had 30 inches of rainfall and coming off those mountains is unimaginable. The devastation is heartbreaking I’m lucky as I now live west of there on the Plateau so I’m good. I can only imagine if this had happened before TVA had built those dams and controlled the water flow to some extent. The death toll would probably be in the thousands. Some of the stories are unbelievable one house in Hampton,Tn. was swept off its foundations with 5 people inside and was carried down the Doe River almost to Elizabethon. They all survived. I have a lot of good friends in those areas and they’re having a tough time.Growing up we had a 400 plus year old oak tree behind our home dating back to the 1700s it’s gone.Stay safe Lewis

My god GG, you still don't see it...and continue making excuses for their incompetence. You seriously believe the clowns the Shadow Dems have put in key positions in the Biden Admin?

And you believe Mayorkas when he stated the border is secure years ago? My hope is that the avg citizen is not so easily fooled.

The direct quote from or POS lying DHS leader, "We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have. We are expecting another hurricane hitting. We do not have the funds. FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season," Mayorkas said Wednesday.

DHS has diverted hundreds of millions to illegal immigrants-loops,[Estimate is $640m but with zero transparency citizen rights groups will have to sue to get the actual amounts] now they have no money for predominantly Republican victims of the hurricane.

Hopefully common sense folks will see it, It's the shadow Dem Administration diverting Billions to their stupid policies that left our citizens in a pickle.

So far this year the Biden Admin has splashed money to; - $24,400,000,000 to Ukraine. - $11,300,000,000 to Israel. - $1,950,000,000 to Ethiopia. - $1,600,000,000 to Jordan. - $1,400,000,000 to Egypt. - $1,100,000,000 to Afghanistan. - $1,100,000,000 to Somalia. - $1,000,000,000 to Yemen. - $987,000,000 to Congo. - $896,000,000 to Syria. - $9,000 per illegal immigrant that has entered the U.S. [and we all know its WAY more than that in actuality]

WV Mountaineer - As for the utility workers waiting around, I have a little experience... I retired working for the phone company after 43+ years, from lineman and construction then promotions to repair man, to Central Office to Network Operation Center... There were times it was hurry up and wait, especially my early years in construction, but normally we had our daily orders first thing in the morning or whatever shift we were on at the time... Aside from 911, I never really worked in a new disaster area, I can only assume these guys got called out and/or called in from different areas around including out of state and were first instructed to be ready with trucks, tools, materials and equipment at a certain meet... From there the managers and engineers all the way up to company CEOs and likely other utility CEOs were working together were already assessing the damage and working together how to start to tackle the damage... Basically they had to have a game plan before you can start the game, that is reasonable,,, but after 5 days to a week and still not moving that is unacceptable, that is why I said take video... It's not actually the working crews causing the holdup, it's more likely the managers and engineers getting the game plan together, but then it may be the government holding them up for safety concerns... But guaranteed they were unprepared for that big of a disaster and likely a flustercluck tackling all the issues... It would be a BIG operation...

From Elon Musk; Just received this note from a SpaceX engineer helping on the ground in North Carolina.

@FEMA is not merely failing to adequately help people in trouble, but is actively blocking citizens who try to help!

“Hey Elon, update here on site of Asheville, NC. We have powered up two large operating bases for choppers to deliver goods into hands. We’ve deployed 300+ starlinks and outpour is it has saved many lives.

The big issue is FEMA is actively blocking shipments and seizing goods and services locally and locking them away to state they are their own. It’s very real and scary how much they have taken control to stop people helping. We are blocked now on the shipments of new starlinks coming in until we get an escort from the fire dept. but that may not be enough.”

There are a lot of cheerleaders for sending our money over the Israel and the Ukraine to support their wars, yet hand wringing over our nations slow, stupid and almost criminally ineffectual response the the hurricane. FEMA doesn't have enough money for the hurricane season? Well maybe they would if we didn't use it all on paying illegals to come in and ransack our country, paying for the Ukraine and Israeli wars and every other stupid thing, like pay raises for our politicians.. Besides, if our government actually helped the people affected by the hurricane, they would want to stay and BlackRock wouldn't be able to buy them out for pennies on the dollar for their lithium mine, like they are doing in Lahaina for their 15 minute city. Just venting.. This whole situation just has me a little pissed off. Peace, JayG

"What storm" was Biden's reply when asked today... Yeah, the devastation wasn't even on his mind, the dude is totally gone... He's a total disgrace with the world watching...

Those NC mountain people, not Asheville residents, but country folks in the small communities and rural areas, are very conservative, decent people.

One thing I've noticed about the aftermath of the storm in NC......there are no reports of looting. I'm not sure why......

Jay, I think a whole lot if people are pretty pissed off about now... don't let it get to you... vent it out like you do, their is something very sinister about this administration and the whole world is taking notice. Peace brother, get in your tree stand and think of the good times with your Ohio buddy.

I'm in the northwest corner of SC. Ridiculous the devastation in our area. But for whatever reason it seems to make us humans feel better that we are not as bad off as someone else. I don't mean that tritely but it is an interesting phenomenon. Perhaps similar to envy; but the opposite. Most in our area have gotten power back and this is just an inconvenient amount of work and time without power, home damage and car damage. But WNC is a whole different level.

Western NC has been destroyed. There are a lot of very good people moving heaven and earth to help out. And it is needed. There is a lot of truth to the ineffectiveness of the govt. But it is not a blanket statement. There is a steady stream of chinooks going up and back every day. This is a situation that was difficult, if not impossible, for the federal govt or anyone else to have imagined and planned for.... There are suspended railroad tracks, roads gone, houses gone, people stuck in trees. There is not much need to embellish what happened. It is that bad.

A contractor friend quoted a waterline repair and he said under normal circumstances his timeframe would have been 6-months.

It is horrific and I am sure that there are many problems and many solutions caused by the individuals helping out. No blanket statements should be made right now; there will be time enough to evaluate this down the road.

Just do what you can to help.

Samaritan's Purse and the goat trains seem to have been very effective. I do worry about bullshit groups capturing donations that do not go where they are intended but have not heard of any yet.

I think the simple reason for this ineptitude is that Biden checked out years ago and Kamala is campaigning. I can't understand how the 82nd Airborne was in Haiti two days after the earthquake but being an hour away from the devastation in NC took them a full week to get there. Leadership matters. I think Pete B did the right thing by asking Elon musk to give him a call and they quickly worked through the red tape so that Elon's teams could start delivering Starlink units again.

Meanwhile, the poor folks on the west coast of Florida are bracing for another CAT 4 hurricane on Wednesday. Looks like the bullseye will be around the Tampa to Fort Myers area. My buddies down there are so sick of this shit. Praying for them.

I have two sisters who moved down to FLA. They both live down in Venice, which is in the bullseye. One sister left and is now in Atlanta and the other is riding it out there. She is about 200 yards from the coast. There is supposed to be a 15-20 ft storm surge. She says that she'll be fine. I'm going to be praying my ass of for the next couple days, that is for sure. I am praying for those in this hurricanes path,, and those who were affected by the last one. These is still no word on my friends in Mortimer and Edgemont. I was told that those places are gone. No offense, but your sister needs her head examined. Not only is she a threat to herself and her family if she has one...but she is a threat every rescue worker that might be expected rescue her.

I expect many lost their vehicles in the first hurricane so have no means of transportation?

08-Oct-24
That and many in Florida have out lived their immediate family. They’d rather die in the known than lose what they got unknowingly from afar.

Sometimes, there are worse things than dying. Everyone’s got that place in them. And, I respect my fellow American to decide when, how, and where that applies to them.

God be with all in the way.

WV, that's very true it's not a black or white decision for some to evacuate. On the otherhand, I have a freind who lives in Naples FL and she's not leaving because she dosn't want to use a PTO day and her car only has about a 350 mile gas tank. I hope for the best for her, and anyone else who decides to stay for whatever reason.

Ricky, WVM, totally agree. I've tried to talk to her and have her leave, she said that she's good where she's at. What can you do? She's an adult and she and her husband have the means to leave, hell, they have one of the nicest RVs that I have seen. In fact, they just got back in from Jackson Hole about a week after the last hurricane. They are both retired and very well off so it's not like they can't afford it.. I don't know. I love her but I'm like, damn..

I agree with Ricky. If someone is ready to die, and they'd prefer to do it in their hurricane ravished home, that's fine. But, I guarantee you, if people like Jay's sister get into trouble, they will be the first people screaming for someone to save them. It's kinda selfish, if you ask me.

It's not a matter of "crying and whimpering at the first sign of trouble"...it's a matter of unnecessarily putting rescue workers in harms way when people inevitably realize that they bit off more than they can chew.

When the s**t gets real, very few...if any...just say "oops, I miscalculated...I guess I'll just die.

Maybe they should have a version of a do not resuscitate (or do not rescue) order for people who decide to ride out hurricanes.

It's one thing if you have no other choice...but if you choose to stay...even though you have resources and wherewithal to protect yourself...thats a completely different story.

JayG pretty much told us which camp they are in.

In my opinion, it's not a whole lot different than the guy who has 8 beers and says "I don't need no d*mn Uber, if I die...I die."

Hey guys, so my sister and her husband at the last minute decided to get in their RV and go Sound towards Miami. They went below the hurricane and I just got a text from her this evening. I guess cell service and power is out there. Anyway, they made it safe and are back home. Their house is still there, some damage but still there. Their neighbors house got knocked off its foundation and is a total loss. She says that it looks like a bomb has gone off in her neighborhood. She said she will send pics as her connection gets better. She said it took her over an hour to try to get a text out to the family. When she said she was staying, I got so friggen pissed at her.. But she's an adult, sort of. I don;t know whether she had a change of heart or her husband, who is a pretty level headed guy just told her to get her ass in the RV. Whichever the case was, I am just glad that they are safe. I wish I could say the same about my friends in NC. Nobody has heard from them. From what I have heard, where they were is still unable to get to. Wilson Creek just took everything. JayG By the way guys. I really appreciate your concern for my Sis. I truly do. Thanks.

The Shawn Ryan podcast just had a couple of guys on his latest episode that were providing help to the people impacted from Helene.

They provided first hand experience of the lack of help the government is giving the people that need it.

13-Oct-24
Holy smokes man. It’s past time to round up local gas well workers, loggers, and foresters. Get some capable equipment in their hands. And build some friggin’ roads into those places in NC that are still unreachable. Why this hasn’t happened is beyond understanding.

They work in the woods everyday. They’d know where the old roads in the mountains are, buggy paths, horse trails, etc…. They’d know how to get through the rock and cliffs. WTH? This is unbelievable.

Kinda makes you wander what in the world is going on.

Rather interesting that they can say they are low or out of money but if the government needs it the printing presses at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing work 24/7. They can send pallet loads to Iran but taxpayers sorry, here’s some KFC coupons.

Did you watch the video that he corrected the mistake and apologized for being wrong on? After watching the video I think that just solidifies that Shawn is a stand up guy. If you had listened to the podcast you would know there is a lot more to the story of what’s going on then just one airplane with supplies.

Yes, that’s why I posted about it.

“If you had listened to the podcast you would know there is a lot more to the story of what’s going on then just one airplane with supplies.”

I know there is. That claim - that a bird was filled with supplies only for a photo op and the aid never was sent - was by far the most scandalous. The rest just highlights the complexity of a disaster response and the breakdowns that occur when trying to coordinate across local, state, and federal levels, between public and private entities.
