Hey fellow bow hunters. I currently live in PA and might have to take on a new job in Maitland all Orlando area. I’m an Archery diehard. What is the hunting like in the immediate area? Could I find something close by or would there be heavy travel. No idea hat I am getting into

I posted this in the state forums but got no replies back so I thought to post here.

Can't really speak to the Maitland area specifically, but did notice some WMAs not far from Maitland that do discuss deer hunting. Some pretty big national forests a bit north of there too that have deer hunting. It will likely be a very different experience than what you're used to in PA, but there are certainly options to get in the woods.

Buy a good thermacell. I have hunted close by and the mosquitos are wicked. I was in the Darrian Ga area once hunting for hogs that were destroying a farmers crops. They have rattlesnakes that are gigantic. The hunting was fantastic tho. Good luck

When I was looking to move there LawDog on here was very helpful, shoot him a pm. He is going to be south of you near Tampa, but was still helpful.

The Ocala national forest is north of you and has a ton of land to hunt.

Also as others have said check out the WMA. I think their is an Air Force base, I think Avon Park on Hwy 27 south of Orlando too that allows hunting.

As other as said it will definitely be different, between snakes, gators, bugs spiders etc. Some areas I even believe the deer rut starts super early in July in some areas.

Good luck. Just fyi if your not aware I4 down there is a nightmare.

The only thing I can add is that it will be massively different. If you can afford it, maybe go down, spend a few days. Hike some of the huntable woods, check out the area in terms of living / commuting etc. Big move like that needs some good intel.

I lived in the Orlando area about 30 years ago and was in the same position as you. I looked at the Ocala areas that you mentioned but I imagine that gets pounded. I ended up getting on a lease in NW FL that was about a 1.5-2 hour drive. That worked OK. That would still be the direction that I would look. Hunting ground in FL will continue to diminish as development continues.
