Hey guys, if anyone has any of the old snuffers in your junk, I'd love to buy them from you. I have shot the 145 grain screw in for 25 years now, but I'm starting to get low on my supply. I'm open to other weights as well as the glue on ones.
I know, I know, I could move on to a new broad head, but they have been especially good to me through the years on many animals and I'd like to acquire enough to get me through a few more years.
The way you stack up animals, you can probably get by with only another 1 or 2 LOL - sorry, couldn't resist!
Seriously, congrats on your recent CO elk, awesome story, and well-deserved. Praying you have many, many more in your future.
Carl
Carl,
Ouch! :) However, I can take it and it is sort of true on elk. The five years I spent before filling my CO OTC tag was the longest drought I've had in my elk hunting life. However, I have at least two really good tags in my near future, plus I can shoot all the whitetails I want in my backyard so I'm just trying to line out the back end of my hunting life.
FYI, I have already told my wife that when I'm 80, if I have to, I'll pay for a NM landowner tag, hire someone to drive me to my favorite water hole in my favorite unit, cock my crossbow and then leave me until dark or I call them to come get me and my elk out for as many days at it takes to fill my tag.
Of course there are many assumptions there: 1) that NM will still have UW tags for sale. 2) It will allow crossbows for those with medical exceptions & 3) That I have enough $ left to pay for such an adventure.
I doubt I can get snuffers to fly out of a crossbow set up, but who knows.
Darrell, From one old elk hunter to another I have 6 or 8 that I will send to you for free just PM me your address. Great story and elk. living in Mich. I have to travel out west to elk hunt with tags getting harder to get some years it's just cow tags and hunting by myself it's harder to get them out. John C.
That's the spirit Darrell!! And bowelk65 is why Bowsite is so awesome...
I like your style Darrell, I’m 77 and too damn close to the scenario you described. I’m relegated to hunting from a ground blind and my wife wants me to have someone hunting at the same time I am. She doesn’t always get what she wants though ! ;-))
There are some on eBay, prices are all over the map...
I'm in the same boat Darrell, down to my last two 145 Grain Snuffers. Great heads.
Out of curiosity I looked on eBay for Snuffers. Dana’s comment was an understatement for sure. I’ve hardly seen such a difference in prices. Some of them were nuts !
You missed the deal, I just sold a lot of old Snuffer BH’s in my archery liquidation sale.
Thanks guys and bummer Buffalo, I would have definitely bought yours.
I would get ahold of BB (Bill Allard) and see if he still has any he would sell. You can find him on Facebook.
I found 13. I also have the boards with the files and leather strops for sharpening them. Free to a good home.
wow....very generous Norske!
You should try the VPA 3 blade in the wide 1-1/4” width. They come in various lengths and are superior in all regards to the snuffers. And that’s saying a lot Because those snuffers were awesome
Thanks Norske! I'd love to at least pay the shipping cost. I've sent you a PM with my address
Yes, BB is who convinced me to switch from Thunderheads to Snuffers back in 1997 after I had a Thunderhead slide on the outside of the ribcage on a bull that was quartering away from me. He convinced me the Snuffer would have likely penetrated through the last rib into the boiler room. I've never looked back. I even used to sell "Pre-Sharpened" snuffers to some guys on here. I've worked hard on multiple bows getting them tuned so they will shoot them well as they do require an almost perfectly tuned bow. However, I've also put the finishing shot on a buddy's bull and the difference between the wound channel my Snuffer made and his SS Snuffer was significant. Worth the effort. I'm sure the VPA is a great head as well. I just would like to stick with what I know.
Darrell, there on there way.
Darrell I bought some sharpened snuffers from you once upon a time. I would like to know your sharpening technique.
Beachtree - I shoot the big original 160+ grain Snuffers.... Go over to the LeatherWall and do a search, there are tutorials over there, and I think maybe Ryan (Roger's son) explains how on an 6" grinder too...
Usually, I just use a big 16" bastard file and then strop them... I can usually sharpen one in a couple minutes, it's simple once you get the hang of it...
I have 10 screw in that are 123 to 130 grain on my scale & 6 glue on that are on some wooden shafts I inherited. No idea their weight. Probably 125 as well. If you want the lighter ones and want to cover shipping, their yours.

I just did a search, link here is BB's method of sharpening Snuffers:

Beechtree,
I bought two large diamond stones many years ago. A medium and fine grit. I start with the medium and with some pressure do 20 strokes per side and then go down to 18, 16, etc. until 6, then 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and usually by then I have a decent edge. Then I move to the fine stone and do the same but starting at 12, 11, 10, down to 1 and then finish by hitting them on a piece of leather I have on a wooden block. If they don't pop hair off my arm or leg, they need more. The bench grinder method looks like a nice way as well.
Been using Snuffers a long time. I prefer the biggest ones I can get and add inserts to get them to 200 grains. I have had the light ones (100 and 125’s) bend and break but the big ones are a lot tougher.
Have killed a lot of critters with them over the years. Lots of elk, deer, bears, and even a moose. Nathan Andersohn turned me on to them way back in the 90’s when I lost several animals in one year with 2-blade heads. Those Snuffers made a huge difference in recovery!
Bill Allard was also a big proponent of the Snuffers on here and turned a lot of guys on to them. Miss seeing him posting here.
I don’t know how many I have but I still have at least 30 in various weights. Not planning to get rid of any of them any time soon.
I have used the VPA 1 1/4” three blade heads and they are definitely tougher. They don’t have the cutting diameter of the Snuffer but still great heads.
Really wish someone would get the old Snuffers back in production…
I have some old sniffers. Just pm me with an address and there yours. Mark
