Hey guys trying to get an idea on my set up! I have Carbon Express Red SD arrows at 28 1/2 in draw! Bow set at 68 lbs! I’m switching to 125 QAD broadheads, what weight insert do I need and what total weight should I be looking at? I’m told 475 to 500 total? Also want to use an arrow wrap and the new Halo lighted nocks! I really do not want to switch arrows, I have a dozen and I like the arrow! Hard to figure out what insert! Thanks, Ken

What is it that you are hunting? Mice? Elephant? It makes a difference.

Lots of exclamation points!! Main thing you should worry about is if your arrow spined correctly. Total weight of your arrows depends on what you plan to shoot with and personal preference. Do you know the stiffness of those arrows?

Those arrows are like 9 grains per inch, so a 30" arrow (yours are prob shorter) will be 270 grains, 125 head, 25 for your fletching and wrap and 21 for your nock. Youd be right around 450 grains with the standard aluminum insert, if you want to be closer to 500 find a 50 gr. insert.

I'd be concerned you are getting close to being under spined once you add the 125 grain head with a weighted insert on a 350 spine arrow at 68 lbs. Add your arrow length and someone can probably calculate that for you.

Yep, John nailed it. You are under spined or close...and might have problems getting perfect arrow flight with a BH

Depending on arrow length, you might be able to keep them on the short side with a std insert and 100g BH and you should be fine.

FYI, a compound will shoot an over spined hunt arrow just fine and it makes for a more durable arrow in the field.....but under spined is asking for problems.

28 1/2 inch arrow and the arrow weighs 9.8 grams per inch!

I'd move to an Easton Axis in .300 spine with a 75gr brass insert!!!!!!!

Slider, my setup is almost identical to yours. I’m using the standard insert with 150 grain heads at 70#. Arrow weight is about 449 grains with regular nocks and they fly and group just fine. This combo will shoot through any ungulate in North America.

I agree with Brotsky! Assuming the 475-500 TAW is desired!

My 300 axis are 495gr, that's with a 50gr brass insert and 100gr bh, arrow is around 28.5" s

Agree that it is highly likely you are going to have trouble with not enough arrow spine. Dropping to 100g BH would help and still be ok in total for elk.
