Hello, I am new here. I shot a black bear in Maine back in September. It was a 245# dressed sow so somewhere between 275# and 300# live weight. The cape is in my freezer but I'd like to get it to the taxidermist soon for a 1/2 life-size mount. I have seen just about every 1/2 life-size on the web and I just love them all. I really don't know what to choose. I already have a rug (mouth open) from a 150# bear that I shot in 2020. I don't have a ton of wall space left so another, larger, rug is out of the question, although it would probably look awesome.

What do you guys think is best for a 1/2 life-size? Mouth open panting? Mouth open aggressive? Mouth closed? Upright pose with both claws in the air? Stepping over habitat with one paw up and one paw down seems to be pretty common.

Opinions are welcome. Help me pick something that I won't regret!

Treestandwolf recommended this and the artist who did it

it is amazing but I hope he has a better picture of his than I do of my sons.

Very similar to Grant's half body mount, but this bear was arrowed on a spot and stalk hunt on salmon streams in Alaska. Added the fake salmon, ferns and blueberry bushes on the mount in an attempt to match the actual hunt.

EDIT: Virtually every bear I saw on the salmon streams was panting while catching their live meals. Easy decision for my mount...no regrets.

I think the open mouths on the half-mounts look terrible. Thats just my opinion. I am waiting on one I shot last year that is very close to the first picture.

My taxidermist just finished up this one for another hunter, and it’s the only half mount I’ve seen that I like.

CFMuley, very nice! I love the way the head is turned to a sharper angle like that.

"Paul in my head I saw a Air Jordan in its paws"

LOL Shug! (That particular sockeye was the closest matching live bait mount I could find.)

A couple I really like in there.

I wish I had a photo of mine, but my taxidermist freezer broke so I have nothing to show as I was going to do a half mount also.

Not particularly fond of the half mounts but love that one of CFMuley's!

Not half mounts I know. My daughter just whipped this rack up for a couple of her rugs. In the process of making a shelf on top for her skulls. Pretty good space saver.

We had a boar and sow mounted as a cave mount and have received positive comments about it. I've seen similar with a single bear as well.

I think it looks good with our (Millie's other life-size mounts)

I'm really following this. 280 dressed out. The white mark is a W. It's at the taxidermy now and I would like it to show the best it can. Please keep the photos coming.

The cave mount and cfmuley mounted bear are both cool and unique. Almost every other bear pose full body or half is a small variation of the “other” poses above excluding those two. I currently have 2 bears at a taxi one is going FB mount the other 3/4 wall mount.

This is the wall mount I settled on (not my bear). It’s kinda a down hill pose shows more of the body and it’s slightly “different”, than the norm.

I don’t have a picture. But what about posing it reaching up to grab a bees nest?

Anyone have a ballpark cost of a half mount? I’ve always done rugs.

The top of the pedestal comes off to set him on a table if I wish.
