I had my bull moose officially PY scored today so I will tell you the measurements so when you get that tag, you will know what to look for.
1. Width= 38 3/8, before the 60 day drying period the width was 39 inch.
2. Number of normal points =5 on each side. ( a point must be one inch in length and not more than one inch wide at the bottom of that inch. Rounded " points" do not count. So there were 3 points on each paddle and two points each on the brow tines. A point only counts as one inch regardless of the length of that point.
3. circumference of beam as smallest place = 5 3/8 on both sides.
4. Width of palm. Right side= 9 7/8 and Left side= 12 3/8 so a 2 4/8 reduction for gross
5. Length of palm, (including brow palms) Right side= 25 2/8 and Left= 27 5/8 so 2 3/8 reduction from gross. If this bull only had single brows, it would not have made PY of 125.
GROSS 134 2/8 minus 4 7/8 = FINAL SCORE 129 3/8 Pope and Young
Thanks Dennis for coming to the house and measuring my Once in a life time bull moose
Congrats Paul!
Explain again how a single vs double brow tines are scored and how many extra inches it gives you. Moose scoring confuses me.
John, when there is a double brow tine, the total length of the paddle is measured basically from the top of the paddle then across the open space to the V of the brow tine. On a single brow tine, the measurement goes from the top of the paddle to only the base of the paddle., One can gain 4-5+ inchs with a double brow tine vs a single brow tine.
Good stuff, Paul. Congrats again!
Nothing wrong with that Paul.
Congrats,
Robb
Congrats again Paul...on your successful bow hunt of a lifetime! Shiras moose are so cool!!!
That's great- congrats Paul!
Congratulations again on the beautiful Moose Paul, I'm glad it made Pope and Young. And it was so nice to have taken it with your Recurve, just that much more rewarding. Nicely done. Kurt
Congrats again Paul, mine won’t make it for that reason only single brows despite a 43” spread and just over 6” circumferences, but no matter to me a great hunt and a good bull in my eyes.
Very nice Paul. Good looking wall.
Any moose with a bow, especially with a recurve, is a great accomplishment. Congratulations again Paul, with all the scouting and extra effort - you earned it.
Congrats again Paul!
That mount looks great.
Well done from start to finish.
Paul, You are more than welcome! It's has always been an honor and pleasure to see and measure all the hunters trophy's the last 29yrs, and to hear the stories behind each animal, that's what makes my job as an OM so great & fun. I enjoyed the visit with you Paul, and to see your great collection of a lifetime of bowhunting trophy's. Again, Congratulations on your OIL Co. bull moose!
My Canadian moose from BC has a very similar antler configuration to your Shiras, Paul. I’ve never had him scored but I suspect he’ll be right around the same number as yours - borderline for making book. If he does make it, it’d be because of the benefit of the brows no doubt.
