Shot two nice whitetails this year in SD. I'm considering a double pedestal mount with a prairie theme. Anybody got any photos of double pedestals? Especially with a prairie theme. I was thinking maybe an old weathered fence post with some barbed wire, grasses, etc.

Here’s a triple I had done couple years ago that I haven’t added habitat to yet.

Here’s one that I did several years ago. I didn’t do the taxidermy work, but I did all of the base, habitat stuff, etc, myself. It was a very fun project.
If you’re interested, Steve, I did a thread about the project about 10 years ago, titled “Finished my pedestal mount”. BTW…..congrats on the bucks!

Sorry about the terrible pic! I just started putting this one together, using a pair of bucks I killed in 2020. Hard to see in the pic, but I’m using a cedar fence post from my property, that the bucks had rubbed down to an hourglass.

Thank you Troy! That looks amazing. I will search for that thread. Did you use natural vegetation for that? If so it looks like it is holding up great.

Yes I did, Steve. All the grasses and forbs came out of the same CRP field. I picked/cut all of it late in the fall. I spray foamed the base, and poked holes with a stiff wire into the foam where I wanted to put the plants, then glued them in place. They still look great, IMO.

The rubbed cedar fence post is perfect! There was one on the property I was hunting that was rubbed like that and would look great. I think I might ask the landowner if I could buy it from him. That fencepost and some old rusty barbed wire, maybe a rustic "No Trespassing" sign with the landowners signature, and some prairie grasses would look amazing I think. Maybe a shed antler I found out there as well.

I’m betting it would look great, Steve. Here’s a pic of the post I’m using on the second double mount. If you go that route, one suggestion I would have would be, if possible, to leave as much room as you can between the two mounts, so the rubbed portion of the post can still be seen.

Here’s one I did. Not a prairie seen but I did use a cedar tree and southwest desert type grasses on it.

Congrats on a couple great bucks Steve.
Troy love that post. Does it still have the integrity to hold the weigh?

Yes it does, John. It’s still pretty strong. I kept a close eye on it for the last couple of years, and then pulled it when I thought it was getting thin enough to where they might snap it off. I put another cedar post in it’s place, and they went right back to rubbing the new one.

That looks amazing butcherboy, thanks for the ideas!
Troy, how tall do you think the post would need to be minimum?
From: t-roy

Steve….the post I used on the second mount is right at 5’ from the top of the post to the floor. 6’ would be better, but if you put it on a short pedestal, I think 5’ would work just fine.
