Need to get a pair for a Christmas gift and have never had a pair. Any recommendations? This guy doesn't hunt but is an avid hiker and outdoor photographer currently in Alaska. Looking at Yaktrax.

Totally depends on the intended use. Yak are for putting over shoes to walk/run on icy surfaces. Not for crossing glaciers or ice climbing. For winter running on packed snow and ice Yak work great.

So what’s the middle ground for hiking in steep, rocky terrain that gets iced up, but you’re doing 6-10 miles and don’t want a flex-free sole on your boot?

Another options. I use these. A little more $ than the Kahtoolas but I like the strap across the instep to help keep them from coming off if snagged.
