Anyone have any experience with electric bikes? I want one to go up a mountain road on the back side of my property in WV. It doesn't have to go over anything just up a steep hill about a quarter mile long. All the ones I see advertised are on flat farm like roads in the midwest. I want one to get quietly to the back of my property.

My Bakcou Storm will go up some pretty steep hills. More limited by traction than by steepness. There’s a couple steep rocky hillsides I go up where I struggle with the traction. But it will go up

Thanks for the info.

JR — if you air down a fatbike tire, you will have approximately zero traction issues, unless you’re a lot heavier than I have ever imagined you to be. A quarter mile is nothing, and if it’s your property, you can groom it as you see fit, so you probably don’t need anything all that rugged. I could ask my sis-in-law how much power it takes for her to tow my niece in her trail-a-trike, but if I were you, thinking you’ll just use this for a few hunts a year, I’d probably start with the cheapest possible option. You obviously want a workhorse, not a race-horse or a show pony. That clearance-priced Razor that Jon found may be the perfect solution for you.

My bakcou mule will take you up it with little to no issues

The best value I've seen for and ebike is the Rad Power Bikes fat tire. I've ridden one over 35 miles in the mtns around Georgetown lake in Montana when it was nice out. Works incredible for about $1200.

With that said, I personally own a Specialized Fat Tire Turbo Levo. Completely awesome until you hit a trail that has a deep V groove in it where your pedals hit and it won't go without pedaling. Which brings me to the Bakou bikes with a twist or button throttle to get you past those types of spots. Their full suspension version is completely insane. Yeah it's a bike, but ohh so much more.

Pick your poison :)

Cheers, Pete

I have a himiway and I love it, they will turn a 3 hr walk into a 30 min ride ..zero complaints here it’s hauled out my a deer, a 10 yr old kid, and all my gear in a cart 5+ miles. Several separate occasions .. usally without the kid tho.

Huntiam how do they haul deer out? Dragging, cart?

I just need to get up the hills quiet in the mornings. Hills are steep but have tram roads and I don’t have to go over loads etc. I’ll get the deer out with my Rokon

Love mine. Total game changer. I now ride instead of walk miles on public land

Bakcou Mule for overall amazingness and versatility. Rad or Rambo for lower priced quality. I have a Mule and a Rambo R750, and my wife had a Rad, traded up to a Mule. The older Rambo with extended front fork is a great tool too. I have a cart as well.

Just one more thought…

If you’re not as spry as you used to be, maybe something that is more of an electric mini-bike is a better solution than an electric bicycle? Something where you can put both feet flat on the ground at the same time, without injury…. More like your Rokon.

Because if you’re not gonna pedal it, why deal with pedals, proper seat height, etc?

The mini works way better on rough logging roads for Wis whitetail hunts. Way safer and versatile.

We can't operate an Ebike on public land in my state where I hunt. Be nice to use to haul out a deer though.

^^ not here in Pa. either. If/when they are allowed, I’ll have a Backou Mule. Not sure it’ll ever happen though.

You can use ebikes on State Forest land. Just not on State Game Lands.

Be careful what you wish for. The drainage I used to hunt for Elk has been completely blown out by e-bikers. They’re not hunting, just riding, which is much worse, because they’re there from calving season ’til the ski lifts start to open….

What is the best mini to get me up some hills?

And do I really need a $6000 bike vs. $1500 bike to get up some hills. I see some $1500 bikes with twice the motor watts of some $6000 bikes.

From: Jaquomo

It's not about the wattage. It's about the components and battery quality, along with features like torque sensors,.smoother shifting, hydraulic brakes, and wattage adjustments (ex: the Mule can be adjusted from 750 - Class 2 legal on BLM bike trails, and in many cities and states - to 1000 watts for use where permitted and needed) The cheaper ones have a rear drive motor that produces much less climbing torque than a mid-drive for the same wattage.

But if you aren't planning to use it heavily or uphill-downhill in rough, steep country that will stress the cheaper components, where you don't necessarily need the torque of a mid-drive, a $1500 bike will work just fine.

As with most things, you get what you pay for. A $500 Diamond bow fitted with a cheap sight and rest will kill an animal just as well as a $2000+ bow with another $1000 in accessories..

Not sure how much or where you can use ebikes in Wisconsin. The public land I hunt there is usually a sign in the parking area stating foot traffic only.

One thing that nobody has mentioned is e-bikes are heavier than youd think.

12-Dec-24
That’s only an issue when You carry It… LOL

BUT….. If I wanted one for the application here, I would be looking for basically an electric Rokon. Low to the ground, no pedals, no gears, no falls from an elevated position, and who gives a rip if it tops out at 10mph?

Jaquomo's Link
Link to the Wisconsin ebike law. Basically the same as Colorado and many other states - "Ensures that electric bicycles are regulated and treated in the same manner as human-powered bicycles, except that local municipalities or the Department of Natural Resources may prohibit the use of electric bicycles on a bike path under its jurisdiction."

The guys wants the bike for his private ground in WV, who cares if theyre legal on public land in WI. I thinks an ebike would suit you fine, I cant see a need for an electric mini bike when their are so many great options with ebikes. They are an awesome addition to my hunting routine ON PRIVATE LAND.

anybody had any experience with an electric trike? i have some good trails on my land but it is hilly, do you all think a trike would go up some fairly steep places? i would love it for the quietness of an electric trike, thanks! "an old bowhunter"

Anyone thought about an offroad stand up scooter? Would be way more portable than an ebike.

19-Dec-24
LOL… you should look into one of those Offroad-capable Segways like the cops had here for Park Patrol….

There are some fat, knobby, low-riding ebikes at the Costco right now…. The Jetson, they call it…. Which is right up there with my Emily Littela, as as humorous references go….
