Beav's brown bear recap!
Bears
Contributors to this thread:
A brown bear with my bow has always been a dream for me. However with the costs of these hunts it seemed as though that's all it would ever be. That was until my son Zach moved to Alaska following his own dream! Zach became close friends with Trevor Embry and since they live close together they spend a lot of time together. Soon after Zach moved up there he was able to sit with Trevor and watch him arrow a brown bear and on that same hunt Zach killed a black bear. He was excited for the spring of '23 as he would then gain his residency and be able to hunt a brown bear of his own. That season Zach helped run baits and was able to arrow his first brown bear. Fast forward to this year when plans were made for me to join them in bear camp and as soon as plans were set, I couldn't wait. I would be making my way North the 9th of June and prior to that the boys were checking cameras and doing some sitting. The baits were hot and it didn't take long for bears to start getting killed.
First to score was their buddy Nick on a beautiful colored brown bear. Trevor joined Nick on this hunt at one of Nick's baits. Things were starting off with a bang. Problem was it was still two weeks until I would be joining them.
Camera's were showing more brown bears than normal and with every trailcam pic they sent the anticipation heightened.
Baiting with weighted breath for the rest
There was also a big chocalate black bear hitting one of the baits.
Man I couldn't hardly take it! The boys were planning on hunting the weekend and the following week Zach was flying back to Nebraska to be in a wedding on the 8th of June then he and I would fly back to Alaska together.
Well the their weekend hunt was off to a hot beginning when Trevor put an arrow in the big chocolate black bear. Trevor was thrilled with his nice color phase bear with a perfect thick coat.
Oh yeahhhhh! Can't wait for this one! Thanks for sharing this, Beav! Also, Beav- if you want to share custody of Zach, I'm happy to do so. I wish my son moved to Alaska!!!
Trevor had to return home that Sunday but Zach and Nick were going to stay and hunt Sunday night together. The bait they were sitting had pics of one brown bear that had visited two out of the last three nights. They heard something coming loudly through the brush and out popped a a gorgeous brown bear.
Zach wasted no time in releasing an arrow. The bear snapped at the entry of the arrow and hauled ass into the thick cover. They both sat their in shock at how quickly it happened. Just then the unimaginable happened.
No sooner had the bear bolted into the brush that a giant of a brown bear steps out right at the barrel. Nick was tagged out and Zach's bear had just taken an arrow to the heart and there stands a giant and they are fresh out of brown bear tags.
They hear Zach's bear gasp and crash and at that sound the big boar at the bait snaps his head around growls and charges into the bush towards the dead one. They are both crapping their pants. Zach isn't one bit disappointed he couldn't shoot the giant as he knew he had just killed a damn fine bear. They wait a while before taking up the track in hopes the big boar had vacated the immediate area. I get this text at 4:00 a.m. from Zach back here in Nebraska. I am so pumped for him and can't wait to hear the story.
I’m hooked! Thanks for sharing Beav.
Zach calls me and is super excited and now I'm wide awake. Turns out Nick had shot a nice black bear shortly before the brown bear had shown. Zach said they had a lot of work to do to get both bears taken care of and would give me more details later.
It had been a great weekend for the boys with three bears on the ground! Only one more week until I would be up there to join them. Time seemed to be crawling over the next few days. Zach made it back to Nebraska for Josh and Rachel's wedding and the next day we board the plane with headaches. Not even that could dampen my spirits.
It was a long day of travel and the sight of snow capped Alaskan mountains was a welcomed view.
Zach had to work the next day and then we would be leaving for bear camp. I go purchase my bear seal and now this was feeling more real by the second.
I join up with Trevor and we go shoot our bows and then head to Nick's and he is boiling out some skulls.
We hang out waiting for Zach to get off work. The views here are amazing and I just take it all in.
Zach finally arrives home and everything is pretty much loaded and we make the drive towards bear camp. We will be hunting for a few evenings before Trevor joins us on the weekend. Their buddy Brian would also come hang out but first he had some of his own baits to hunt. We arrive at camp and both are a bit exhausted but excited for the next day.
We awake the next morning and are nearly carried away by mosquitoes. Zach said the weekend before there were almost none and now there were clouds of them. We load up the four wheeler with dog food and head out to check cameras and freshen the baits.
First bait is the one Zach had killed his bear on a week ago and there are only black bears on the camera. The next bait is hammered and the camera shows the bait has been out for a few days. There were several brown bears on camera here including a breeding pair but pictures had really tapered off the last couple of days. We rebait and head to the the last bait.
Love was in the air. With the rut in full swing you never know what can show up at a bait.
The third and final bait shows one brown bear but he has been in there the last two days. The wind was perfect for this stand and we knew where we would be sitting come evening. This time of year you can basically hunt 24 hours as it's light almost all night. We would be sitting from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. which was when the bears were most active.
I'm going to pick up here tomorrow and try to get through the rest of the hunt. There is a lot that happens including the lowest of lows to the highest of highs!
It would be total hell to look at that view every day ! ;-))
Can’t wait for the rest of this !
This is awesome!
Looking forward to the rest of the story.
C’mon, man!! Don’t leave us hangin!
Man oh man oh man!!! It was a sure thing that the Alaskan wildlife was going to take a hard hit when the Welch family infiltrated! Bunch’a Killers.
Oh man! Can’t wait! Dang sure started with a bang! That’s a lot of bear’s hitting the dirt already! Awesome hunt of a lifetime right there!
This is great! I'm heading to the Brooks Range in May for grizzly and this is sure getting me pumped!
This is going to be epic. Please keep it coming.
Thanks for taking us along.
We make our way up the mountain that evening and settle into the double ladder stand. The mosquitoes were not as bad on the mountain and it was a beautiful evening. We had been in the stand 30 minutes and a black bear comes in but he is nervous.
Brian is hunting one of his baits several hours away and is texting Zach back and forth. Brian checked his camera when he went in and said only brown bear was a sow with little cubs. He was hoping for the big black bear to show. Then Brian send a message “have a big sow not sure if it’s the one with cubs.” Then the next text says “I just killed a fricken giant! He is dead right in front of me!” Are you shitting me?!?
Come on Harlin, how patient do you think we are? Ha glad to see this.
Turns out the sow came back by at 25 yards and there was a giant boar trailing her. Brian made a perfect shot and the boar exploded and started spinning circles biting at his side. Brian puts another arrow through him only inches from his first arrow. The boar roars and tips over. Giant is right!! We couldn’t believe it and we were so pumped for him.
We talk about Brian’s bear and watch the black bear when all of sudden the black bear looks up the mountain and hauls butt! Zach said “get ready”! We hear something coming through the brush and he is making a lot of noise. Just before he comes Into view he bolts back behind us and all goes quiet. I look at Zach and he shrugs his shoulders. Our wind was perfect and we are puzzled. I’m thinking somehow the only brown bear on camera here has winded us an hour into our 13 hour sit. Just then, Zach grabs my leg and says “draw”.
There walking down the hill was a beautiful brown bear. I was at full draw and the boar walks in and faces us but then circles the bait and approaches from our right. I have my pin on him and follow as he comes to the bait. I am shaking like a leaf and I see the the pin and he hesitates for a split second but there is a branch covering his vitals. He continues to lumber to the bait.
This is like the cliff hanger serials I watched at the picture show as a kid !
The boar stops for a split second and I shoot. I know immediately this isn’t good. My shot was low and forward. Shit!!! If there was ever an arrow that I wanted back it’ the one I just released! I feel looking back I rushed the shot, didn’t pick a spot. You can see the arrow in this photo.
We talk it over and look at the cell phone video. It shows what I already knew. Zach tried to stay positive but he knew as well we had a crap situation. We send the video to Trevor and Brian and Nick. They also try to be encouraging but I’m literally sick and feel like puking.
We wait a good amount of time before getting down to check out the arrow. The arrow lays right where the bear was and it doesn’t look good. I know this arrow clipped the leg and that was it but I held out for a miracle. We take up the trail with the shotgun in my hands and Zach with his pistol. It’s thicker than hell and at that point I’m willing to take on a charging brown bear to get rid of this sick feeling in my gut. We trail him up the mountain and the blood goes dry. We turn up nothing more from last blood. I know this bear is going to live but it doesn’t help much. We plow down the mountain and by now it’s almost early morning. We are almost back to the trail when a bear charges through the brush and Zach yells at him and pulls his gun up. It’s a smallish black bear and is ten yards popping his teeth. Zach says “give me your bow.” The blackie continues to snap his teeth and bristle up. Zach puts an arrow through the boiler. Wow that was a rush!
Awesome thread!! Not that I need any fuel in the fire to go chase a brown bear now!
We take some pics and Zach is glad to have some black bear meat. At least this took my mind away from the brown bear for a bit. We head to camp to get some sleep and I get none of it. I basically laid there for three hours replaying the shot. It was the lowest point of my bowhunting career of 40 years.
Zach wakes up after a three hour snooze and we decided to go check the other two cameras. First one shows once again just black bears. The other one had a brown bear on it. That bait is where Trevor would be sitting when he comes in a few days. I am still in a funk and even tell Zach I’m just going to end my hunt. He says “that bear is not dead you will get another chance “. We decide to sit the bait that night where Zach had killed his. We had a parade of black bears that kept us entertained all night.
The night went by fast with the black bears coming in and out. We head to camp to get a bit of sleep.
I had not slept in about 48 hours and even then sleep didn’t come easy. My mind kept flashing back to that moment. I eventually fall asleep and it felt good. I awake and I convince myself how damned lucky I am to be here and I can’t do anything but learn from my mistake and enjoy the rest of the trip.
Keep it coming! Almost as good as hearing it in person!
We decide to go check the bait Trevor will be sitting and freshen it. We walk into the bait and when we get close we hear a bulldozer with teeth popping coming through the thick underbrush. We retreat back and I say “F&$@ this let’s get out of here”. Zach doesn’t argue and we walk back down the mountain to the four wheeler watching our back trail as the bear continues to raise a ruckus.
We end up sitting the same stand as the night before hoping if we left the other one for one more night a brown bear would show. This night is a lot like the night before with mostly the same black bears. We did see one big black bear that didn’t come into the bait. We headed for camp and had decided we would return to the stand I had hit the one and hunt it the remainder of the trip unless Trevor killed on the third bait.
We load up some bait and hike in to freshen the bait and check the camera. We look through the pics and see several black bears and then there it was….. a brown bear!!! Our spirits were renewed and I couldn’t wait for that evening.
That’s it for tonight I will finish tomorrow. Hopefully I can get some videos loaded on here too.
Wow, just like being there - without the "pucker " factor.
I can’t even keep track of how many bear have ford on this epic recap. The dying may not be done either
Great story so far! Can't wait for the next chapter!!
Should be a bowsite rule to finish your damn story in one damn day!!!!!!!
Loving this one! Amazing Bear hunt for sure!
I usually lose interest with these type of threads, but ya got my interest beav.
Weird not seeing hold up a big fish, just for the heck of it let's see one ;0)
Loving it and can't wait for the next installment!
Scent, only bad part about this trip was that it took away a week of shooting bigheads. It was an epic year for bigheads.
I went on a baited brown bear hunt six years ago. It was awesome. I’m really enjoying this thread. Good luck Beav.
After lunch today I will wrap this up.
Awesome! I can't wait for the update.
When they are great like this one I have no problem coming back to check for updates. What time is lunch today?
Hurry up and eat! Dang this is good!
Great story, looking forward to the conclusion!
We make our way to the stand and settle in for a 13 hour sit. It is the coldest night yet and slowest action. We see one black bear and one snowshoe hare. We head back to camp.
We get some sleep and wake up to a beautiful day. We talk to Trevor and Brian and they will be here tomorrow. We will be sitting the same stand tonight and both Trevor and Brian emphasize it’s the rut and anything can happen, you just have to be there in the tree when it happens.
We head back up the mountain and make it into the stand and it’s a bit warmer than yesterday and the wind is perfect. We had not sat very long when a new black bear shows, followed by another. Things then slowed down for a couple of hours and it was now near midnight.
Zach grabs my leg and picks up his phone and I lock my eyes on a big chocolate brown bear slowly walking down towards the bait. He is sniffing around and shows no interest in eating. He is slobbering and trying to scent a hot sow. He is facing me and I am ready to draw when he turns. My heart is pounding worse than the first one! He slowly turns and I come to full draw. He gives a split second and I am not settled and I’m not going to rush the shot. He then turns and disappears where he came from. It takes several minutes to regain my composure as my legs are shaking uncontrollably.
Wow! Waiting kind of patiently for the rest....
We had hopes the boar would return but three hours had passed with nothing. It’s about 3:15 a.m. and Zach says “I’m going to close my eyes for a few minutes.” A half hour later I look up the hill and see a giant blonde head coming in. I tap Zach on the leg and he raises his stocking hat up over his eyes and sees the beautiful boar and his heart almost jumps out of his chest. The boar walks in and lays down at the bait.
The bear lays at the bait for over ten minutes and Zach continues to video. There were a couple of times he opened up his vitals but I didn’t want to shoot him laying down. This things fur was perfect and one of the most beautiful colored bears I could have imagined. The longer I watch the calmer I become. I tell Zach that as soon as he stands I am killing him. What seemed like forever he eventually stands and slowly turns broadside.
I come to full draw and for the first time this trip I am composed with a brown bear in front of me. I pick a spot settle the pin and the arrow is gone!
The arrow hits tight behind the shoulder and the bear explodes in the air and plows down hill. Zach and I both listen as all goes quiet for about 15 seconds before we hear a crash followed by a death moan. Zach turns and says “you just killed a brown bear!” I couldn’t believe it! The shakes start and now I am a mess.
Beautiful brown bear boar for sure! Great arrow placement! Congrats Beav!!!!
We wait 45 minutes before we get down to track even though we didn’t think it was needed. We follow splatters of blood and broken brush maybe 25 yards when Zach turns and gives me “the look”. There five yards away lays my ultimate dream animal. Here is how we found him. I had tears as we hugged and celebrated the taking of this animal!
What an awesome hunt and story, congratulations!
We take tons of pictures and make some phone calls to friends and family. I was now at the highest point of my bowhunting career!
I pull an IPA I had saved for this occasion from my pack, and drink it there in the early morning hours overlooking the valley and Zach skins away.
We load the meat and hide up and hike down the mountain to the four wheeler.
We get to camp and there is no way we are sleeping. We talk to Trevor and Brian and they are pumped. We plan to drive and meet Nick and his girlfriend as well as Brian and Trevor and fish for the afternoon.
We meet up and fish for reds. Mostly we watched Nick catch his limit quickly. We have a blast and celebrate with a couple of beers. Brian and Trevor head out and want to be in the stand by 6. I told them when they go into their stand they better be ready for a fight. Brian said “I hope that bear tries!”
What a recap buddy, reading the book is always better, of course sharing your enthusiasm over a whiskey is tough to be beat, the brown bear hunt is just 1 of the many adventures you will embark on in the Last Frontier… love it!!
Zach and I hang with Nick for a while and decide we are going to head to bear camp. We are dragging ass by now with no sleep. We are about half way back to camp and Zach almost goes off the road when he gets a text "brown bear down!" No fricken way!!
We then get a call from the boys. Turns out the boar was waiting for them when they walked in and here he came. He was not happy and was only at ten yards when Trevor came to full draw and Brian was aiming the gun. Trevor says "If I shoot he is coming. Lets try to get in the stand". They get by the bear and get into the tree stand and the bear retreats out of sight. An hour later he returns to the bait and doesn't like something and starts to leave. Too late, as Trevor is at full draw and releases an arrow.
Trevor makes a perfect shot and the "gatekeeper boar" is dead. He is a beautful blonde boar. We are in shock and can't wait to meet up at camp!
We celebrate an unbelievable week! Not sure if life could get any better at that moment.
Awesome! Congratulations and thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks Nick for loading the videos!
We break camp the next morning and have the bears sealed on the way home. The biologist was happy for our success and said the moose needed all the help they could get.
3 words came out of my mouth at those 2 videos: oh my God! Wow!!! Those are some amazing bears. You guys know how to get it done!!! Congrats!
Back at Zach's place we meet up with this guy!! Nick and I stay up way late catching up.
wow what a trip! Congrats to all!
My last night in Alaska we spend with some friends overlooking Alaska beauty and I reflect on how lucky I am. I can’t thank everyone enough that helped make this happen. Especially Trevor and Zach!! I love you guys and you made this guy's dream a reality!!
Sounds like a lot of adrenaline dumps on that hunt. Congrats to all.
How is the meat from those big bears? Edible or full of parasites?
No the meat was just fine. Used it for brats and roast. Bear wasn't on salmon yet so really mild flavor.
What a freaking trip! Congrats, fellas!
Unbelievable trip of a lifetime!!!
How far of a drive is it from their homes to the hunting spots?
Thanks for sharing your story Beav. Congrats on taking a great bear.
Pretty big deal as far as I’m concerned! Congratulations!!!
It is several hours. Takes a lot of dedication to keep baits active and a lot of work. Zach made trips 8 weekends in a row.
Definitely a hunt of many lifetimes! Congratulations to the whole crew! Hell of an experience for sure! Amazing!
What an epic adventure, and it couldn’t have happened to a better bunch of guys! Loved getting the daily updates this summer, on how things were going for you guys, as well.
Wow!!!!
What an awesome week and hunt. Congratulations to all involved.
Beav, that is a beautiful bear you killed and it's really special you were with your son.

I can't imagine a better week of hunting those incredible animals! Congratulations and thanks for sharing!
What a great trip and write-up. So glad you got to experience that rush, especially with your son there. Well done all around!
Wow what a fantastic hunt and sharing it with your son and his friends at his new home state is awesome.
This is the BOMB. What a great thread Harlin. You told the story so well I thought I was there. Beautiful bears all around and way to go on the redemption shot. I love that color.
Great story! Congrats all around. Well deserved Beav!
Congrats guys! What an awesome hunt and experience
As I read this story I can’t help but smile. I first met Trevor in 2014. We spent 3 weeks chasing critters in Montana. The next spring he stopped by on his way up north.
Fast forward to 2017 . I meet Harlin and Zach in Nebraska for a turkey hunt. Then in June they joined me in Idaho and I was there for Zach first 2 bears.
I told Trevor take Zach under wing please!! He didn’t let me down.!!
Bowsite is a full circle for lots of us!! Thanks Pat and Charlie
Congrats again Har!! Can’t wait to hear it in person over a dart game and some Old jokes!!! Hunt
Hunt you are so right. None of this would have happened without Bowsite. It has literally changed lives.
Beav, I don't think luck had anything to do with this hunt, seems whatever you do, you give ot your all! Thanks for sharing, this is Bowsite! Thanks for the fish pics ;0)
Good post, Hunt! It’s amazing the contacts and friendships that have been made as a direct result of Bowsite!
Congratulations on getting a great Brown Bear! Especially great being able to get is done with your son there.
Incredible hunt! Fantastic story.....Epic adventure! Congrats!!
Thanks a bunch for sharing!!
Question - could I adopt your son for a couple hunting seasons? My daughter is graduating college this weekend. I suggested that she move to Alaska for this very reason, unfortunately she didn’t think moving there to take dad hunting was a good reason.
Congratulations to you all! Beautiful animals. Thanks for the story and videos!! Great job ! And congratulations again
Great story, pictures and adventure. Congrats on an incredible Bear. Thanks for taking the time to share it with all of us.
Harlin, that was simply outstanding! Many congrats to you and the whole crew.
Congrats Beav, that's a dream hunt of mine as well. Troy shared the video of Zach's hunt with me earlier this year (great commentary!) but I hadn't seen yours. Great all the way around!!
Thanks for taking us along. I am struck by how long it lived after the shot. I know it died quickly, but I keep thinking how much damage that thing could do in that time to a person or person's.
Very exciting and great write up and hunt.
Congrats!
Wow what an amazing story and videos. This is why I love bowsite. Congrats Beav & Trevor.
Awesome experience!!!! Congrats to you all!!!! I love it!!!!!!
That is a gorgeous bear! Congrats!
Hunting with your son is the best. Congrats to you both and also the rest of the guys. What a hunt.
John as quick as the kill em you only need a adopt Zach for a few weeks never mind a few seasons!
Heck of a story Beav!! Best part is killing your dream animal in your dream place with Zach! Awesome write up fellas!
Wow what a great story! Thank you for sharing. Yes a dream hunt for sure! Congrats to all on the great bears.
What a great adventure and such a beautiful bear!! A dream for nearly all of us.
I think maybe the coolest part of the whole story is seeing how life and what you put into it comes (almost) full circle. I bet it seems just a little bit ago that you were taking Zach hunting, coaching him, grabbing his leg and whispering "get ready!".
Nicely done Harlin. I had just returned home from duck hunting and was feeling sorry for myself and Teal the Lab, as there were hardly any ducks around so not a shot was fired. Usually I just hit the hot shower first, but found your bear recap first which surely made my day; Smiles and all. My best, Paul
Fun times that week and happy you were able to make it up this summer Harlin! With the whirlwind of the year I had early on I was just thankful to get into the treestand at all, icing on top that the two sits I got resulted in two nice bears :)
See you in a couple weeks my friend, safe travels!
Ambush you nailed it!! And it surely made me proud to watch it! I called a close friend from the mountain when I broke out the celebration IPA has been carrying. Said to him “you ever sit on the side of a mountain and drink a beer and watch your boy skin your brown bear? I highly recommend it!”
What a fantastic hunt, Beav! Thank you so much for sharing it...wow.
Just awesome all around!! Congrats on a fine bear and memories for a lifetime!! Doesn’t get any better than that!! Thanks for sharing!!
So glad you could make it up! So many good memories that trip and truly one of the highlights in all of my hunting experiences that morning. See you soon!
Very cool and congratulations! I enjoyed the story.
Wow, when those bears took the arrows, and let out the growls, you could hear the raw power they have.
Thanks for sharing. Like others, I truely enjoyed every word, and videos put it over the top!!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Question: with that many bears coming into bait is your head always on a swivel walking through those woods? Seems like they are everywhere.
Good stuff Harlin. Thanks for taking the time to post it all up.
EPIC adventure Beav!!! Congrats on getting your dream animal….with your son and buddies!!
Bowsite has facilitated bringing “like minded bowhunters” together for lifetimes of memories!!!
Mark
Great job Beav and thanks sooo much for sharing the adventure Lewis
This is awesome! Congrats and thanks for the write up. Can’t wait to read about your next adventure!
If Bowsite had an MVP award for the week, you got my vote Beav, awesome thread!
Well done! Congratulations to all and thanks for sharing your adventures!
Awesome story and great write up a BIG congrats to all involved! This story will make me smile all day thank you!
Will be suggesting to my son to read this in the hope that he decides to move to Alaska. Congrats Beav such a great re-cap!
Thanks for taking me along with out having to do any of the work! Congratulations to all the successful hunters, looked like a great bunch of guys!
Epic right there, Harlin! Congrats man and I am ready to adopt Zach so I can put an X in that box too! :)
Congratulations on a truly fantastic hunt and many thanks for sharing it with us all!!
Good as it gets! Bowsite at it's finest. Glad I stopped in to check it out.
Top 10 recap! From a fellow Nebraskan no less! Thanks Beav for taking the time to do that!! I’m lobbying hard for 1 of my kids to move to Alaska some day!!!
That's an awesome write-up and adventure. Congrats on an incredible animal, and an incredible experience!
Awesome writeup!! And even better story lines! Love it all the way around! Congrats!
Harlan, great write-up on a great hunt! Photos add a bunch too!
Reminds me of my 2015 brown bear hunt with Roy Roth guiding! Will never forget it!
What an incredible trip and summer for those boys! Congrats on a dream come true
Geez, how did I miss this thread
Congrats Fella's,
Robb
