That time of year for the annual shed thread... I noticed at least 2 early shed bucks this morning over on the Brownville's Food Pantry For Deer in Maine, see thread:
If you watch any of that web-cam provided in Maine you'll see early shedders on December 16th and throughout the winter view antlered bucks shed all the way through until spring with the late shedders... That is a span of 3 - 4 months is not uncommon, it is the same here in my area...
Wanted to add this photo from what somebody posted here on Bowsite a few years ago... Sorry don't remember what Bowsiter post it, only that it was from Southern Kansas on Dec 8, 2020, earliest I ever heard of an early shedding...
This 4x buck shows half shed on 12/26 and still carrying 5 days later...
The 5x shed on 12/17 and is still carrying one side 2 weeks later and pedicle still looks bloody ... Interestingly, I watched him run off a small buck by head down pointing his one side, he knows he's not fully crowned...8^)
The last picture looks like this shed buck has a pretty good open wound... Broadhead maybe?
Another half shed, this one on January 3rd... Notice the pretty gray doe up front...
Babysaph - With the heavy snows, deer yard naturally in Maine so it wouldn't matter if the feed them or not, they are still going to be congregated in winter... From their site/channel:
"The Brownville Food Pantry For Deer feeds up to 800 pounds of native oats and at least a bushel of apples per day to help sustain the white-tailed deer population through rough winters here in Brownville, Maine. Feeding happens daily around 08:00(8AM) to 09:00(9 AM) Eastern Standard Time starting December 16 and continues to around the beginning of April. These are wild deer and this is not a deer farm. Some of the deer have been coming for more than 10 years. At times there are 200+ deer at the pantry. Wild turkeys also come and eat the native oats along side the deer. There is no Chronic Wasting Disease, or CWD in wild deer in Maine. Please don't complain about it in chat. These deer are all very healthy and there has never been any type of disease spread among these deer. This "Yarding" of deer happens in Maine every winter, even if they were not being fed. You may see deer that are lame. Experts tell us that leaving them alone is the best thing we can do for them. Thank you for watching!"
7x half shed on one of my properties this morning... At first I thought he was a 5x until I watched the video... He has a sticker coming off the main beam and a longer one coming off the burr or the skull plate, I can't tell which... Wish I'd seen what his other side looked like, had never seen him before... Would be cool to find his sheds...
Then the fully shed buck photo from 3 mornings ago...
I guess it takes all kinds, lol. I was watching a rerun of Yellowstone Wardens show that covered the annual elk antler hunt where they open some areas to the public after the elk season for a few days of antler hunting. Looked like the "Montana Mardi Gras". Folks lining the road shoulders for miles two days prior to opening. Drunk, stoned and Lord only knows what else. One officer knocks on a guy's pick-up camper door because he's sticking too far out in the road, posing a hindrance to emergency vehicle access. Officer smells weed pouring out but says in MT wardens can't make drug arrests! Let's him off with a warning but still let's him move his vehicle...go figure! When the gates open and "they drop the flag" you quickly understand the need for "emergency vehicle access". Even though they provide a "pace truck", things quickly devolve into chaos...riders falling off their horses, ATV's running into horses, horses kicking ATV's, pedestrians run over by everything. Better than Talladega and no worry about getting hit by chicken bones if you're in the front rows! I'll pass. Confess now, who makes this pilgrimage every year, lol?
Sounds like a "wild" time olddogrib, let us know how it goes...8^)
Kinda reminds me of an annual event that started here in Ohio in the early 2000's called Deerrassic....8^) Buddy and I went to the very first one on the very first day and once there I started calling it "Whitetail Woodstock"...8^) It was nothing but a big party, concerts and all... It really didn't have much to do with whitetails, it was mostly about selling raffle tickets and partying... It was my first and last time there...
Hey, here is a short video clip of antler shedding on film: https://www.facebook.com/61566590999691/videos/450797684457695
ROUGHCOUNTRY, I'd like to see a full pic of it recolored... and a detail on how tou do the whitening and recolor. From what little I can see from your last pic it looks like you did a great job!
Been keeping a eye on the bucks here in Oklahoma and Texas. Watched this group Friday only a couple were missing one side. Nice 130-140 8 point in the group I'm hoping to pick his sheds up.
"Here’s the official scoresheet of the set i found two weeks ago and they are going into the buck masters book at 174 5/8 of bone. This deer would be a 192 5/8 with an 18 spread credit. World class beams at 29 in length"
Hadn't checked the Pantry site for a couple weeks so checked it today, March 1st and a few are still carrying racks, at least one fully crown and one half rack...
Found these behind my horse pen out in the wheat field. I watched this buck a few times during late archery and early rifle. Pretty amazing he avoided the truckload of neighbors rifle hunting him. They ended up shooting a smaller buck and missed everything else.
Nothing yet but the last of the snow is just leaving. Found this on a recent hike in the woods. Miles away from any boat landing or walk-in access. Not sure what to make of it. Osprey or eagle theft? Kids playing with Dad's stuff again?
Glassed a large group in a wheat field Tuesday morning here in Oklahoma. A couple guys still had one horn and a pretty nice 3 year old was still sporting both sides.
This date was when I used to begin shed hunting for some bucks still carry into March and April... The last buck I seen locally fully crowned was Feb 10th and haven't seen one at Deer Pantry site for about a couple weeks...
