Bwinter - I recently did a little research on the highest scoring B&C base frame 4x4, 8-points of all time and posted on the thread:

https://forums.bowsite.com/TF/bgforums/thread.cfm?threadid=469557&messages=16&forum=4#5355377

The Vernon Winter Buck is tied for 4th ranking as a base frame 4x4 in the B&C records book with the NET TYPICAL score of 180 3/8 inches, killed in South Dakota in 1965... There wasn't much information I could find on it and only assumed it was gun killed since I didn't find it listed in P&Y... This picture in the only photo I could find of it...

Would be a pleasure to hear anything you can tell us on your grandpa's GREAT buck... Thanks...

I look at that buck's antlers and count 8 points, but it's hard to believe it's only 8. It feels so much bigger. What a crazy huge 8 he is!

That is a beautiful 4X4, clean with no junk. Looks like a road trip to Virginia from South Dakota to see Grandpa's buck. Shot in S.D. too bad it isn't back there for people to enjoy.

Here is a description of the hunt my Grandpa helped write and some pics. He sold the horns in the 80s and we have very few pictures of them.

Bwinter - Hope you didn't mind, I updated the "World Record 8 point" tread:

"The Vernon Winter Buck from SE Hand County, South Dakota was killed with one shot from a 30/30 carbine with old buckhorn iron sights from 250 - 300 yards away on 1/1/1965... It is currently (Dec 2024) tied 4th of all time B&C base main frame 4x4 with a NET Typical score of 180-3/8" with the Vic Bulliner Buck... The Vernon Winter Buck wasn't officially scored until 23 years later... The rack was sold during the 1980's and donated and currently on display at the National Wildlife Federation's headquarters in Vienna, Virginia...
