I'm pretty excited to be heading out today for the drive to Iowa, Zone 5 unit, for 10 days.
I've been prepping for the last day or two and it is all falling in place.
Cooked up some Camp meals
Jalapeño with Pepper Jack cheese Elk Braught's and all the fixin's.
Thanks to All on the Bowsite that gave me some Post-Rut pointers/suggestions.
Of course, I spot-n-stalk or still hunt as I don't tree stand anymore.
I had a ball with my 1st tag I had about 6 years ago, doing the same style of bow hunting with my recurve.
Merry Christmas,
Robb
Individual meals
Individual meals
Lubed the axles and topped off the tire air pressure
What I didn't pack under my truck shell, I put in my lil' 5 x 8 hunt trailer.
I even brought the snowblower and e Snow Shovel inside.
With my back, that e Snow Shovel is nice.
I took a break and watched Elk Camp on TV
All packed up, hooked-up, parked behind the gate/fence and ready to Roll, this morning.
If ya see me as I travel across Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska and into Iowa, give me a wave or a finger! ha
After I drew the tag back in June, I got on my dating site, Ourtime.com and met a real nice gal from Iowa.
We decided to meet for the very first time in Jackson Hole.
Sure, we stayed in separate cabins and had a real good time.
So, I at least will have a nice Christmas dinner.
A pic for her scrapbooking
Good luck, Robb
Man, you are very organized. Very cool. Hope you have a great hunt Robb. Keep us posted.
You are a Bowsite treasure. As I read your posts I smile at each one. Preparation/anticipation is half the fun. Safe travels.
Good luck and we look forward to your adventure!!
Mark
Safe travels on your way to God’s country, Robb! Might want to throw in a pair of Bermuda shorts. Looks like temps for the first 1/2 of your hunt are gonna be pretty mild for us for this time of year. 40s to low 50s.
I'm so jealous. Hope you have a blast. Thank you for taking the time to take us along with you.
Have a great trip and keep us posted!
Go get'em Robb!! Safe travels and have another great adventure!!
Yes, Robb does know how to have fun! Kind of an ol fox!
Good luck Robb, safe travels and have a Merry Christmas!
Travel safe and I hope you bring those coolers home full of meat!
Good luck in Iowa Robb! Safe travels and Merry Christmas buddy!!!
Is the gal from Ourtime.com in the picture on your gun safe?
Good luck and keep us posted!
The joy is in the journey. You always seem very organized.
Enjoy, good luck & safe travels. Inch of snow for us last night. N.E. Iowa on the Mississippi river. I can drive into Ill. in 5 min. & walk to the river in 20.. High today 32 & rest of week mid 20s + for us.. Bundle up...
Good luck Robb. Late season in Iowa is probably my favorite time to hunt as the deer can be patterned again going to food. This year may be different, as T-roy said, supposed to be nearly 50 degrees all next week. Save travels and Merry Christmas.
Jayz, Lmao. Never noticed it until you mentioned it!
Good luck Robb!
Send us lots of pics!!!! (of the hunt) :^)
Iowa?? Do they even have white tails?
JayZ, definitely not an Iowa girl!
Go get'em Robb!! And don't let that Iowa "Doe" break your concentration. (well maybe a little, it is Christmas ;)
Nick and Troy may want to keep an eye on those corn fed Iowa girls while Robb is in your State. Just sayin...
Robb, enjoy every second of the trip and hunt. My best, Paul
Have a great trip Robb!
As always, thanks for sharing!
Go get 'em, Robb! Waiting for updates.
Food food food. Hunt the food.
Good luck, shoot straight!
Good luck Robb, and keep us posted.
Hope the weather in Iowa is better than Nebraska where we are Robb. Dec 22 and it was 74 for high! On the bright side we did see deer earlier than I thought, and people sign was very low. Good luck!
Good luck Robb, and keep us posted.
Season started today so anxiously waiting for an update. I still have an Iowa tag in my pocket. If the weather gets right I might make another trip!
Good luck Robb!!!
Good luck Robb, looking forward to your updates on this post, I am sure they will be awesome!
Good luck - looking forward to your posts!
Hope you have a great hunt and will be following Good Luck Lewis
Enjoy the braughts in zone 5 unit!
WoW
Thanks for all the words of encouragement.
Jayz, sorry 'bout that, normally it is closed
I'm glad to be home and what a drive home it was.
I see I have a bunch of PM's, sorry but when I'm gone, I'm gone and don't do any internet stuff.
I'll answer them soon.
A hunt recap to follow, I'm downloading pix ect.
Good luck, Robb
I want to thank all that actually stop by my cabin stay and gave me some intel and to the bowsiters wife at Hy-Vee store that said if she saw my rig to say hi from him, and the fellow bowsiter at the True Value parking lot that recognized my rig from our bowsite.
Travel day arrival was productive as I drop some coin in town, met those 2 people, before checking in.
I hunted Recurve 1 day, Muzzy next day rotation through out my hunt, Still hunting through the thick stuff and Spot-n-Stalk when I saw a buck before it saw me, totally Exciting.
As C-man educated me back in the day about I could Weapon Down and us my Recurve on a Muzzy tag.
I had a great hunt and enjoyed it fully, but I don't want to drag anyone along when I didn't harvest, so ......
Long drive and some real kool sights in each state when it was daytime.
Freaking bitter cold and windy for sure at a potty break just east of Laramie
My Winter Buzz H-cut is great when I have a beenie on, not so much in the cold though, yeh Black Bibs to kinda fit in as a farmer as I travel...hehe
Driving and napping makes for a quicker trip but I'm not much of an eater while traveling so I put together a Bran Muffin w/raisins and some Cranberry-Pineapple juice mixed in and some fruit to snack on too
Great traveling weather going to Iowa, driving home, not so much, Nebraska is a neat looking state
Thats it for this early AM, the dryer buzzer just went off and I've got a ton to do after getting home.
Good luck, Robb
No need to apologize Rob. All of us here are mature enough to handle a picture of a naked lady on a gun safe.
You did not hunt very long? Great rig though
Being gone for 10 days, including travel in late December from home with cold temps, a guy worries about his home.
I'm content.
I wanted to taste these berries but I decided not too after all
Scouting day before the opener was a beautiful day and I did right at 2.5 miles scouting and glassing from the North Shore Trail, lots of sign and tracks coming out of the Private property fields into the public ground.
I had everything prepped and ready to go for the Opening morning.
Opening mor ning in the 40's and reaching a high of 55, with bigtime winds from the south.
I just still hunted along and the cornflake fallen leaves were noisy, even with the wind.
Then the rest of my hunt it was thick fog and 95-100% humidity.
I would come across fresh tracks in the sand along the shore line and then bushwhack up into those draws as the deer where in there.
Not sure what type of bush these are but they sure would grab onto me with those long stickers
And these would be low to the ground or longer and mid-waist high, for having such small burrs, they would get a good grip.
Once in the thick stuff, I would try and stay on existing deer trails, the fog moisture did really help quiet down the fallen leaves and that was nice.
When I got into what a local guy gave me as intel the 'Y' area/ridgeline I had deer everywhere around me.
Did I mention the Turkeys?
Find the does, find the bucks, even if they aren't really Rutting, until the bucks shed their antlers, they still will be checking does out.
I would sneak to 15 yards of does and see bucks in the background of the does.
I was so tempted to slip an arrow into a doe but then I would spook off the buck (s)
I had opportunity at 1 8 pt, maybe 130--140, no broken tines, but I had seen this great big 10 pt most every morning in the background of does and I held out for him to give me a chance/shot.
So thick I couldn't even get a shot with the muzzy.
Dang it
This was a pretty kool find, a hollow tree
When I got to look down into it, I thought Raccoon nest and my face was going to get attacked ~~ but it was just hollow
Maybe some this-n-that in the morning
Good luck, Robb
I noticed you had a back scratcher on your prep table. You think of everything. Great pics, good effort. Thanks.
Thanks BC
I got all the PM's answered yesterday and today.
No one post much anymore, just send PM's??
Muzzy, not the Broadhead the T/C .50 cal, my bad
My broadheads are Thunderhead 100 grn.
This Amish horse and cart single bridge is kinda kool but eerie to drove over, all the wood groans and squeaks.
Saw quite a few houses built semi-underground, Interesting concept.
I did see 1 other vehicle with the same state plates as mine.
No, I didn't stop and chat with them though------
It's kinda weird, but I seemed to always be in the 15% of successful hunters but for some reason the last 2 years, I've been in the 85% of no harvest hunters but a great hunt.
Have a Great and Healthy 2025 All,
Robb
That’s a great haircut! My go to all year long. Wife told me the other day to tell people that I’m not bald, my head identifies as a nudist.
Looks like another great adventure, Robb! Thanks for the recap!
Thank you for taking us along on your hunt...I can relate to the 85%
What year did you do your tour? Glad you got home.
Looks like you enjoyed yourself Robb. Thanks for the recap.
Enjoyed the recap Robb, thanks!
You wouldn't have liked those cedar tree berries
Looks like you had a fun trip! Always enjoy following along. I wish I could be half as organized as you.
Winter wonderland here at home since x-ma eve from what I've been told.
Winter wonderland here at home since x-ma eve from what I've been told.
Thanks for the kind words
I had more stalking action in the AM than I did on evening hunts.
I would just plug my phone in, to charge, ( I didn't need my Onxmaps for evening hunts) and hunt from the cabin as there is plenty of public ground below the private ag fields.
Time to get serious about applying for Wyo-elk and deer.
Good luck, Robb
Although you didn’t notch a tag, sounds like you still had a successful trip, Robb!
True that t-roy
All 3 of my trips to Iowa, I have really enjoyed the country and the people.
Good luck, Robb
Thanks for the the take-along Robb. Always appreciate your stories.
That bridge will handle more than Buggy’s. I cross it all the time with my truck and skidloader on a trailer have to be close to 20,000 GVW.
Thanks for sharing the recap. Sounds like a success to me!
Hey Thanks All
Sure, I drove my JP Gladiator over the bridge, and it was okay, no doubt with your load it squeaks and groans more, I did leave Craig a V/M of thanks.
Bill thanks for sharing all the intel with me, you are the man.
Good luck, Robb
