Hopefully you have been spanning 2 years with the license, or at a minimum, 1-1/2 when applying in both Elk and Deer draws.

This works because the Dept changed their licensing to a 365 day license, and the app ending period is tied to a week day (Tuesday) rather than a date, and that day moves forward every year till it resets back.

This years Elk app closing date is Feb 4. If your license has expired, go into your portal and purchase the license. You can do this prior to the application period actually being open. Scroll to the btm of the main page, select "account login" then log in if you have an account, then pick licenses from the "azgfd apps" drop down located upper right. When prompted, select the "starting date" to Feb 4 2025. After paying, write down the license number, then "print" the license, choosing a PDF instead of a paper printer. This will allow you to save the license to your 2025 hunting folder and you can print to paper at any time.

Now that you know your license number you can apply. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL FEB 4 TO APPLY, EVEN THOUGH THE LICENSE IS TECHNICALLY NOT VALID UNTIL THEN. Go into the application portion, fill in all the boxes, and at the "license" box, type in your new license number. Follow the prompts and finish the process. MAKE DOUBLE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT HUNT CODES. Your license and application receipts will be emailed to you from SUPPORT@CYBERSOURCE. The license receipt will have the license number at the very bottom, the application receipt will have the hunt codes listed at the top. Print them out.

It will take a few days to see the application in your portal because the portal and app modules are not directly connected. That is also why you need to enter your SSN every time you apply.

If you only apply for Elk, the license starting on Feb 4 2025, will still be valid on the ending date in 2026, which will be Feb 3. If you apply for both Elk and Deer, your new license will be valid for 2025 Elk, 2025 Deer, and 2026 Elk. You would then buy a new license for 2026 Deer and it would cover 2027 Elk and 2027 Deer. The Dept presents the tag application schedules at the August Commission meeting every year, so you can get the closing dates way before you need to buy a license.

AZ Loyalty Point;

The Loyalty Point is awarded after 5 "valid applications" (not draws). On the 5th year of applying, you will go into the app period with 4 species points. After submitting and paying for the 5th application, and BEFORE the draw (the app period closes prior to the draw), you will have made 5 "valid applications" and the dept will award you the species Loyalty Point, BEFORE THE DRAW. So, at the time of the draw, you will have 4 species points, and 1 species loyalty point, giving you 5. After the draw, the dept will award the tag or another species point. They award points twice per year, so they don't show up for a few months.

If something doesn't change, weather wise, here in AZ elk country, I would save your points! It is on track to be the worst antler development in history. MANY dirt tanks have been dry for a few months now. Pray for snow in the high-country that continues into the spring.

NM has MANY dirt tanks dry also. Definitely not a good year for the desert southwest!

I’m a 70 year native and have never seen the desert this dry with the possible exception of 2002. When greasewood start dropping leaves it’s dry.

As far as loyalty points, don’t forget to apply otherwise you’ll be set back another 5 years or lose the point. As me how I know…. Damn AZ for having separate dates for elk/antelope and deer/sheep!

You could have told your hunt partner to apply for Deer then be told after the draw it was too much of a hassle. We were set for Coues but he's done now; species and a loyalty points down the crapper.

It would be nice if the portal to apply for the actual draw would open. Thanks for posting.

Looks like they plugged the application hole after they stopped paper licenses. You won't be able to apply till the 4th if you want to span licenses.

From: DonVathome

Bob so now you have to apply on 2/4 and only 2/4 to span a license (for deer and elk) right? I am not sure if I want to test that. I have 12 elk points and 23 deer points.

Not correct. If you do this you DO have to wait till 2/4 to apply.

"Not correct. If you do this you DO have to wait till 2/4 to apply."

...as Bob noted in his last post.

To span 2 years, if you are starting fresh this year, this years license has to have a start date of Feb 4, which will require the applicant to apply on that day. After this initial application, you can apply for the 2025 Deer draw and the 2026 Elk draw when those draws open.

AZ would have been smart to leave it Jan. 1 to Dec. 31st. They have missed out on quite a bit of $ when they went away from that a few years back. Which is kind of surprising because AZ leads the way in creating more funds without actually improving hunting, big game populations, habitat or opportunity.

Amber Munig pushed this thru to help families afford licenses by enabling them to apply when financially more convenient.

"YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL FEB 4 TO APPLY, EVEN THOUGH THE LICENSE IS TECHNICALLY NOT VALID UNTIL THEN"

JFYI this is no longer accurate. I just spent 20 mins on the phone with fish and game after buying a new license active on Feb 4th. It would not let me apply so I called them and they told me since I don't have a current active license I can't apply until my new one is active which is 2/4.

This is also on the add person to app page: **Possession of a valid license at the time of application entry and the deadline day of the application period is required. Valid license types are Hunting or a Combo Hunting/Fishing. Short term licenses are not valid.**

Thats the best policy, just call them for your answer.

Mine is already done. To save $80 isn't worth the if.

I hope it plays out for ya on the 4th.

Good luck, Robb

Bought license today and applied into draw

I assume if/when I don’t draw I’ll get a point? And now can apply again next year without having to buy a license again?

Dang it Randy! I feel for you and understand your frustration with that dogshit excuse for an application system they have. It still takes multiple logins, windows, and transactions plus 75 questions to apply/buy points for TWO species. For that reason I’m always extra giddy when I can stick it to them and get a full year of apps on last year’s license. ‘25 is my “free” year and third time I’ve pulled that off (assuming I don’t draw). $480 in savings! Suck it AZ, haha!
