I once mistook a golden retriever for a mountain lion. It came by my stand in really tall grass. Luckily, I figured it out before shots were fired.

In her defense I'm sure the camera lights were shining in her face and she couldn't see all that well. Crazy that a mountain lion would walk that closely to her.

If I was not told it was a cougar I would say dog. The gait and size reinforce that feeling.

IMHO,the black tip on an upturned tail that doesn't hang but extends rearward, is too cat like to mistake,

It doesn't behave like a mountain lion. What wild mountain lion would casually walk by a lit up human in a neighborhood who is speaking? It didn't even look at her. It basically completely ignores her existence.

It's a dog, the camera angle can be misleading. Tail is not long enough, long pointy ears, it's gait and build. Not to mention that it was way too relaxed in a setting that would have been most stressful to a mountain lion, even if it was a tame one.

Another vote for dog, looks like neighbors malinois. Not enough sag behind shoulders, hair, ears and walk.

Gait, size, white patches on the backs of the ears and the shape of the head (as represented by the shadow on the grass)…… And the way that the critter sort of snaked its way into the grass… that’s just REALLY predator-like to me…..
Truth is, I can see why a lot of people think it was a lion, but there’s just not enough there for me to be sure either way…
I have a LOT of trouble imagining any kind of circumstances under which a lion would be casually strolling past that much human activity… but if someone had documented the tracks and came up with clear Cat signal, I’d be a whole lot more “well, I’ll be damned” than “No Efffing Way”….

Hah! Cross-posted with AG.
Must be an older dog…. I don’t walk like a young dog anymore, either. ;)

Ears on top, gate, small feet, all point away from lion.
Tail and color are lionish, but that’s about it.
