Is lion import restricted because of USA or South Africa? Any chance Trump will reverse?

25-Jan-25
It’s being shut down by SA government.

Free range wild lions,Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana are still importable. IF the outfit you hunt with follows all the criteria for contributing to the local conservation and community.

Even under Bidens reign the elephant and lion permit approvals were speeding up. Can be as fast as 6 months if you a service that helps you navigate the permitting process.

Really, how about delisting the Great Lake wolves,

And the polar bears

And Wyoming/Montana grizzlies.

I’m more confident than ever that the polar bear importation ban will be lifted. Trump is blowing up every single thing that was enacted due to climate change with no basis in science.

Polar bear would be great, maybe be tempted to do it again!

I’m sure already high prices would skyrocket though :)

You see those guys making polar bear replicas at SCI. It's a decent attempt, but there's obviously no mistaking the real thing. Kind of like eating fake meat. Just not the same.

Yeah, I think some of these supposed "trophy restrictions will be overturned....but they are so many more important things that need to get fixed...I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a little while.

Man did you see South Africa....the black leadership is taking away property from whites. Anyone still scheduling hunts there?

Beendare that has been going on in Southern Africa for decades now.

South African hunting is very busy. According to a friend of mine that has a concession over there they are very busy with booking hunts.

Sportsman shows are well represented with African hunting operators selling their hunts.

Ken Moody who sells plains game hunts and is a long time bowsite sponsor has a thread thread on the Africa threads listings the sportsman shows he will be exibiting at. I think the title of that thread is “Come see us in Dallas”

I am not sure that Trump can get the polar bears back without congress.

Tom, the current polar bear import ban was done by the FWS under bush and did not include Congress. It was a listed on the theory that global warming and melting sea ice would eventually cause their decline. It never happened, the bears adapted and the sea ice never vanished.

It simply needs to go through a FWS process according to the link above to be reversed.

Pat, the only thing that article doesn't mention is, who initiates that process? Can hunters/outfitters etc. petition to start?

"If we determine that the threats have been eliminated or suffciently reduced, we may consider delisting or downlisting the species. "

That 'may' is carrying a lot of freight... (Just like 'may issue' vs 'shall issue' when discussing gun carry laws.)

One thing that will most likely happen this Trump term. Is the decriminalizing of rifle suppressors.

There is a bill already in Congress. So hopefully soon will be over the counter

Maybe Trump could slip in an EO covering this, plus throw in delisting grizzlies, and wolves. Might fly under the radar with everything else he’s doing at breakneck speed!

Jay, I thought Zambia still had a quota of importable lions too?

12-Feb-25
I just rattled countries off. My main point was the ban was from the canned lion hunts in SA.

They were not importable to the US before SA decided to stop the hunts. They never met the criteria

Not so sure. Polar Bears are covered by several laws and regulations, not just the endangered species act. They are also covered by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which if memory serves, specifically provides for the importation ban, notwithstanding the coverage by the endangered species act. This is something that SCI and the Conservation Force should be on top of, but all they seem concerned about are African species. Very disappointing.

Fun fact. Polar bear numbers at the highest levels ever recorded. I use this fact to get neutral people thinking so I can try to get the facts about hunting out there. Especially stuff like big game in Africa. It is so sad how few understand that hunting is incredibly important to bag game in Africa. The media spins things and the masses unfortunately buy it.
