Got this email today. I think it's a good move. The 155 net measurement was a high bar for Non-typical Whitetail. Well done PY.

We are pleased to announce a change to the minimum score required for non-typical whitetail deer. In December of 2024, the Board of Directors, at the recommendation of the records committee, agreed to lower the required number of abnormal points (in inches) for non-typical whitetail deer from fifteen inches (15”) to ten inches (10”), respectively. Additionally, the Board also agreed to lower the minimum entry score for non-typical whitetail deer from 155” to 145”.

“When we implemented the fifteen (15”) of abnormal points required twenty-four years ago, many of our members and measurers felt that number may have been too high, especially when compared to our other deer species. So, with twenty-four years of additional data to review and analyze, the committee concluded that it was, in fact, too high. The data suggested that ten inches (10”) of abnormal points was a more appropriate number, with the minimum score of 145”, explained P&Y Records Chairman, Roy Grace.

This change took effect on January 1, 2025 and is retroactive. Those trophies already in the records system that meet this criterion will be moved to the appropriate category and the trophy owner(s) notified. New certificates will be available for trophy owners affected by this change via e-mail at no charge. If you would like the office to print and mail you a new certificate, we would be happy to fulfill that request for a minimal cost. This entire process will take a little time for staff to complete, so your patience is welcomed.

If you feel your non-typical whitetail deer may now meet this requirement, feel free to contact the nearest official measurer near you. To find a measurer in your area, look on our Find A Measurer webpage: https://pope-young.org/Find-a-Measurer.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the records program at the Pope and Young Club at [email protected].

Great move by PnY

Don't understand why P&Y didn't follow B&C's rules when they based their scoring system after B&C to begin with?

Is there a fee due for the new certificate?

This is a great move. It seems to make a lot of sense. I agree.

It’s excellent that now some people will have even more record book bucks than they thought they had. It’s pretty neat.

It’s like being able to put buck in the book without Even shooting another arrow

The numbers seemed solid to me the way they were. Requiring only 10" would seem to muddy the waters between typical and NT. Perhaps the intent was to allow some big deer with a little trash to be entered as either typical or NT, such that a guy or gal could gain some inches? 10" of abnormal isn't all that much... could be one point with relative ease.

I’ve always thought they should drop the NT minimum to 145. This is a great move. Killing a 125 typical whitetail is an accomplishment for sure, but is very attainable to most. Killing a net 155 non typ is the deer of a lifetime for most people. Add in the 15” rule and it just gets very hard to hit that minimum.

Also just generally speaking, a 125 net typical deer and a net 155 non typical deer are two different age classes. My guess is that a non typical of that size would on average be between 1 and 2 years older.

Nice move P&Y, love it

This is my son's P&Y non-typical from 2020. Pushing 180" of gross score, but barely made the 155" minimum. I agree the new 145" minimum was a good call.

Altitude, the P&Y quote in Pat's post answers your question.

pav, the scenario with your son's deer really doesn't have much to do with the qualifying minimum score, but the BC/PY scoring methodology in general. The somewhat abnormal case of multiple "typical" points on one side of the frame being totally discounted.

I've always thought the scoring system shouldn't punish this for the non-typical category. For the typical category, I think it makes a lot of sense. For NT, they should change the system to count additional "typical" points on the frame as abnormals, ONCE it is already established the deer qualifies as NT. Obviously, they could just change to gross score, but that is probably too much of a change from traditional methods.
