Questions:
1. Recurve, longbow, or wheely bow?
2. Broadhead?
3. Outfitter?
4. Taking Nick with you?
5. Any fishing opportunities there?
Give us the details!!!!!!
1) My "frankenbow" homemade metal handle TD Recurve (Windwalker limbs on an old compound riser, 63" long, 60# draw @28") is my "go to" hunting bow this trip. I am taking my 60# Quillian's Bamboo Longhunter longbow as a back up, in case anything goes whack with the #1 bow. They shoot the same arrows so that's all good.
2) I am taking 6 Gold Tip traditional carbon arrows, three with G-5 Montec heads, and three with Zwickey 4 Blade Deltas.
If I shot the recurve it'll be the Montecs.
3) Victoria Outfitters, Dave Evans.
4) Nick has Governor's School, can't break free this trip. This trip is my gift "to me".
5) Dave says since I want a "meat" bear, not a P&Y trophy, we will do lotsa fishin'. He says Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon. I am actually looking forward to the fishing as much as the bear hunting.
Mike D, I am not sure what my 'net acccess will be. I don't have a fancy I-phone, and honestly, am more looking forward to getting away from keyboards and screens for a bit.
I will take lots of pics and update y'all when I am back.
I also took my Longbow as a backup when I went to Quebec a few years ago.
I was too chicken to use it or a recurve on my first bear hunt, so my Hoyt Compound was what I hunted with.
Next time, maybe the long bow if I work up the courgage.
Hope you kill a booner.
Tony
I did NOT get a bear, and the trip was...AWESOME! I'd do it again in a heartbeat (in fact I am going to, 3rd week of June 2015,

Wish I could get a Dollar for every time you and Nick launch an arrow before June.
Are you recurving it, or going with a compound, or not decided yet?
We plan to leave Rocky Gap Va at about 5AM on 6/13, get into the Ferry Launch in Nova Scotia before 8:00PM on 6/15, arrive at Cape Breton by Ferry around 7AM on 6/16, in Millerton NF by 2, 3 PM at the latest.
I hope to have some bear success pics this trip! :-)
;^)
We sent the app about 3 weeks ago and we still have almost five weeks so really not sweating it.
I do need to go ahead and book the ferry.
If anyone has suggestions on places to camp or good inexpensive motels in Nova Scotia, I'd appreciate it.
The Thermacells had NO EFFECT at all on the black flys.
Only the bug suit saved me.
I slaughtered the walleye and pike with them.
Caught my biggest Bass in VA on the Banjo Minnow.
No kidding.
I stocked up on Joe's flies, and tiny bullet-weights for same, some Rooster tails, and small deep-runner plugs in silver and yellow-orange baitfish patterns...
"garden hackle" is also a preferred hook dressing on the Victoria River, and the soil/climate there isn't conducive to earthworms/nightcrawlers/red wigglers, so I plan on bringing a few, anyone know if that's a problem at the border?
Nicks was a 16 yard shot, full penetration, bear retained fletching half the shaft til just before expiring (found 6 feet from the dead bear) 50#@28" Wing Archery Redwing, gifted him by "High Life" Dave Lee, Port Orford Cedar Arrow, Zwickey Delta 2 blade head.
Both young male bears, 130ish, very nice black with brown muzzle coats, should be good eatng.
From there to the ferry at North Sydney NS was about seven hours, got there in time for a leisurely dinner, lined up at the Ferry a bit after 8 PM and broke out the Kindle to kill time.
Ferry pulled out a bit past 11 PM, arrived at Port Aux Basques about 7:15 Newfie time (there's an hour time diff @ the border crossing, another half hour at NF)
Trip back we ran it to Newport ME (between Bangor and {Portland, mile marker 157 on I-95) and stayed at Lovely's motel. Nice place, clean, cheap, free WiFi, pet friendly and lots of free ice for the meat coolers.
We drove from the ferry debarkation @ 7:15 AM til about 6 PM, counting the "gain" hour, about 12 hours driving.
Ran it all the way in to Rocky Gap from Maine, 17 hours, got home quarter past midnight
Nice photos, and thanks for sharing.
Congrats to you and Nick. I wish I had been there with you two.
Tony
We arrived at Badger about 2 PM on the Tusday, Dave followed us into Millertown, and we left the old huntin rig there, transferred essential gear over to Dave's truck, for the hour and a half slog down the logging and camp roads to the lodge.
Got everything offloaded from truck to boats, motor boated across river to the lodge, and settled in our cabin about 4:30
We got out gear together, jumped back in a boat and headed to the stands about 5:50, for a 5 hour sit (long days)
May the Force be with you !
