I got lucky in Spotsylvania County today.

It is rare that I get a Deer on the first hunt of the season, so this is proof that there is a God.

20 Yard quartering away shot. You just got to love those textbook shots.

Can't wait to get out there again.

Tony

Finally get to do the grip n' grin. Shot a nice ten pointer/125 lbs. tonight. Terrible shot but was fortunate to hit an artery and he piled up within a hundred yards. Saw Nick Mundt do the same bad hit on TV using G5 T3 broadheads so I went out and bought some. Same result. Wicked broadhead.

Thanks, what I can't understand is in loudoun county is people complain about the deer but when you ask them to hunt, they won't let you even with a bow. I delivered some firewood to a guy who has 15 acres and asked if I could hunt. He was cool with it but I guess he has bunch of neighbors who don't like hunting. I bet these are same people who complain all the time about the deer. Sorry just had to vent.

Nice job Steve. I was in Newfoundland the week of 28 Sept, Unit 10 right off the ferry about 45 minutes near South Branch, what an awesome place! Had a great hunt in Newfoundland. Guides thought I was crazy for trying with my bow, but they were calling me Robin Hood by the end of it!! . Sorry the only shot on video is a rifle, but enjoy. Check out my video on youtube.

Story behind the 8...I first started watching him in the summer of 2013 when he was an 8 but just not big enough. He made it through that season and the next to my surprise, continuing to stay an 8 but growing tine length and mass. His spread never really grew. But non the less, this year he finally made it to shooter status. I first spotted him this year crossing a field at first light in mid July as I was out scouting. Then spotted him again 12 days later, and then he vanished until I caught a quick blurry glimpse of him on my trail cam (pic). Long story short, the first morning sitting this certain stand, I had a 7 point harassing does all morning, then the 7 came right under me and I figured he was heading on his way, about 5 minutes pass and then all heck breaks lose behind me (I cant see due to foliage), I knew it was the 7 and something big fighting...They were tearing the place up. The fight breaks up, i can see the 7 staring down the other buck, but I can't see the buck he just fought. Then I catch movement making its way towards my shooting lane and all I see is antlers....He steps out like planned...The rest is history. Bitter sweet that I wont be able to following him through the summers any more, but thankful to be able to harvest him.

Here's one for you! Took a doe at 10 yards this morning. She piled up 20 yards from my truck. Mature buck finds her, gores and paws her for half an hour, then beds down with her 42 yards from me! I tried every call in the book, but he won't leave her. Finally, I've got to get down. At 10:40 I lower my bow and fanny pack just in time to hear footsteps. A beautiful 8 walks under my stand, works a scrape at chip-shot distance, then walks away!

Yesterday was a great day to be in the deer woods. Had at least six bucks chasing does from sunrise till 1100. Two nice shooters but they stayed out of range. I witnessed my first full blown fight between two mature bucks. 125 yds away on the hillside opposite my stand. Lasted about 30 seconds. Went to the spot when I was walking out & it was all torn up. Back in the woods by 1400 and just as the first raindrops started to fall this buck came off the hill to my left. He stopped to make a scrape 60 yds out before taking his final walk 17 yds behind my stand. Very slight, steep quartering-to shot entered his left shoulder & exited his right armpit. Took off the top of his heart; ran 40 yds before piling up.

DAMMIT! Did it again. But while I got this window open need to mention some other action. Had a nice buck come in Wednesday morning dogging two does. Since I needed a doe I passed on him & ventilated a nice fat nanny doe (sorry no pic). Then yesterday I sat till 0830 when the rain started. When I got back to my truck it was letting up a bit so I decided to go check my trail cam on nearby property before heading to work. Well, as I started walking to the camera I see a big doe 80 yds away under my tree stand (same stand I shot this 8). And wouldn't you know it 30 yds behind her is a boomer of a buck. Got a real food look at him: wider than his ears by about 2" and a solid 10 pt with long G2s and a huge body. I never go into the woods w/out my bow so I start a stalk to intercept them. They are heading for a large laurel thicket and I was in disbelief when I see a set of antlers just above the tops of the bushes walking in front of me about 35 yds away moving from my left to right. I look ahead and find a window in the bushes & just as he steps into it I draw & put my 30 yd pin center mass just behind the shoulder. As I release he jumps the string and drops. I watch my arrow do a slight arch and drop right into his shoulder.... CRACK!!! He takes off and bolts up hill. I am giving myself high fives as I start following at a walk as the rain starts again. Now, I am expecting to find him piled up within 100 yds but don't. I follow a funnel I know they take and sure enough 80 yds ahead of me are two does & my buck. He is walking away limping severely. There is no arrow in him & from the looks of him I figure he is going down soon. I head back to the truck marking his last spot & get my gutting gear. When I get back to the spot he and the does are gone. I followed the known travel route to a small creek thicket where I jump the does. As I move on slowly I smell rutty buck & figure he is bedded down in the thicket & dead or soon to be so I back out and go to the truck till the rain lets up. Well, to make a long story short I took the shot at 0900 and searched every possible spot I could till past noon. No arrow, no blood, and no deer. Makes me sick. Went back today after getting blown out of the tree and looked again hoping find vultures or some other tell tale sign, but no luck. If you are wondering why I pursued so quickly you need to realize that I am hunting in a neighborhood in Great Falls & didn't want him to drop in someone's front yard. Makes for bad public relations. My best guess is that when he jumped the string he dropped & I smacked him solid in the scapula and did not penetrate into the vitals. Hope I find him or see him again from my stand.

Nice deer bandicooter. He is a beauty. I made it to the woods yesterday afternoon and took a doe with the smokepole. I have to thank my hunting buddy for gutting it and dragging it out of the woods. I helped as much as I could with one arm. It felt really good to sit in the woods. Saw 2 small bucks that were out cruising around. The doe came in at 30 yards around 4 so I shot her in the neck and dropped her. Just getting in the woods would have been enough for me so getting the doe was a bonus. Looking forward to bow hunting next year as it ain't going to happen this year. Keith

Made it out this afternoon and my buddy got a decent 8 with his sluggun. Another good day in the, woods. Can't wait to get better and start shooting my bows. Before I fell I had just got my invasion tuned up and it just sits there waiting. Going to be a fun summer .

killed a 5 point with rifle Saturday. Not posting the pic as it's a gun kill. not apologizing because its meat, and the landowner wants deer numbers reduced. Not a QDM area.

Fuzzy,

There does not seem to be many elitists on the Virginia forum.

Post the photo if ya want to. Would love to see it.

24-Nov-15
Would like to see it too Fuzzy, I also took a 5 pointer Saturday. Not the best pics in the world because I was by myself and he had broken one side off so I was trying to hold it on to take pics of him.... lol I bought a new barrel for my Thompson Center Encore in 7mm-08 caliber so I had to try it out this rifle season. First deer I have taken with it since giving the ol' .270 a rest this year.

Awesome job. Me and my partner did a little population control this evening in loco county. I got one doe with the muzzleloader and he got 2 with his sluggun. Getting better everyday as I was able to drag one of the little ones out of the woods. Keith

Back at it I smoked a 88 lb 3.5 year old doe at a manged hunt last night. I was using my X bow left handed at 25 yards. Used a grave digger hybrid broadhead and I have to say that it is a wicked broadhead. All those weeks of practice paid off. Rehab is coming along and working hard to get back to the compound. Keith

Went out this morning hoping to get a crack at a doe. I catch a glimpse of this guy about 150 yards away, I did a grunt/bleat can sequence and he started to make his way towards me. I lost site of him in some really thick holly cover, and after about 5 minutes I hit the grunt tube and bleat can again and he literally charged in. I almost didn't have enough time to put away the grunt tube and bleat can and pick up my bow. He closed the distance to 15 yards, quartering towards me. He only went about 50 yards or so after the shot. I was in complete shock not expecting to see this buck. I believe him to be the same double split brow buck I'd seen earlier this summer a few miles away. He broke off one of his split brows. Complete shock that he responded to the calls like he did.

In the first picture you can see where the arrow entered right above his front shoulder. The arrow exited out through the gut. Arrow barely had anything on it. Good thing he dropped in site.

Great job, i was able to get a small 8 pointer yesterday evening with the slug gun. On Tuesday evening my friend got a real nice 8 with his x bow. He called me to help find it. We had a 300 yard drag uphill. Looking forward to next year as I am finally able to lift my bow. Hope to be shooting it in 2 months. Remember to always clip in and take your time when going aloft. My son lucked out this year and killed 3, a doe first, a small 6 pt. and then this 7pt. Lucky for me too, since I was laid up this season, I didn't have to worry about getting some fine eating.

took a button buck one the Claytor Lake State Park management hunt (they're badly overpopulated and need to remove LOTS of antlerless deer, so the button wasn't a bad thing) with shotgun (bow not allowed on this hunt). Going to Natural Tunnel SP Jan 22/23rd

13-Jan-16
Hey Fuzzy, Which day did you hunt Claytor Lake ? I live right there near the public boat launch, had to work Friday and while I was home on Saturday I never heard any shooting unless it was early in the morning while I was snoozing... lol Do you know what the numbers were on deer taken ? Most of those deer stay over near Bear Drive next to me and hide out near the launch. They really need to let me thin a few of them out for them... lol

Dave I was there on Friday, I just went in on a "standby" but got in on a stand right off. Killed my deer and had it dressed and out by 9:15 so I came out and let another standby hunter go. Bu 1:00 PM all the standbys had stands (that cold rain ran em out of the woods) so I went back at 2:00PM.

There were 9 deer killed Friday, they were moving well.

Interestingly, the deer in that park are only hunted on the Youth hunt in mid December, and the Shotgun/muzzleloader hunt in January, 4 days total, and they move around SKYLINED on ridgetops! I swear they do. Hunters have a devil of a time getting shots, b/c they don't have a safe shot.

(as we all know deer rarely skyline themselves in normal hunting areas.)

Yeah they hang near the boat launch, and around behind the maintenance shop, and on that point past the gift shop.

That place would be a bowhunter's dream.

15-Jan-16
There are some nice bucks in there as well. There were 2 that I seen that I know of that would be 130+ deer this past year. You are right, that it would be a bow hunters dream, that's why I said that they need to let me thin a few of them out for them. I have hunted it twice, first time was the very first year that you could hunt it. At that time, it was bow and muzzleloader only. They changed it a couple of years after that and took out the bow hunting and made it shotgun/muzzleloader only.

yeah it'd be nice. Rangers said they had a high wounding rate with bow hunters.

So, here's something you don't see every day....bear with me on this.

Out hunting with son on November 4th (date & time stamp are incorrect). Son shoots a buck with his muzzleloader and I head over to check it out. No need for tracking, but always interested in reading the sign afterwards, we follow the blood trail back to where I believe it was standing when shot (scene-1). I immediately realize it was standing in front of a game camera and suggest he pull the card to see what he's captured...

The camera has caught the very moment of the shot, with smoke and/or hair puffing out both sides!

Pretty wild...
