Kaibab elk

Just got the email from AZGFD about all the leftover tags for elk on the Kaibab. Is anyone going? Probably one of the toughest hunts in the state, I imagine. The allure of hunting elk in AZ is tempting, but not with the prospect of trying to find 40-50 animals in such a huge unit. 20 years ago when I was hunting mule deer up on the Kaibab outside of Jacob's Lake, I thought I had still-hunted up on the new world record. Turned out to be a nice 5x5 bull bedded. Never knew I was there. Not quite what I was expecting!! Anybody else run into elk up there?

Yep, I have been on them a few times. First time, I snuck into a group of them bedded down and the cows were talking a little. pretty cool, but I wouldn't waste my time trying to hunt them. out of 20 years hunting up there, I have only been in them... maybe 4 times.

However if a guy were retired and had all summer/early fall to poke around, it would be a fun hunt, plus you should know where some deer are too by the end of the hunt.

if I was a resident that got skunked in the draw I would do it. but a nonresident I would have to pass. need to invest way to much time.
