Elk applications are available beginning today. Just applied - well worth the $10.

From: Jeff in MN
01-May-18
When I saw the title of this thread my first thought was, huh, I wonder what state. :-)

From: longspeak74
01-May-18
Funny to think I can go to Colorado and buy an OTC elk tag but need to apply for one here. Exciting times!

01-May-18
Yeah but there are also other states where you can't buy an OTC tag like Wyoming and New Mexico and your odds of drawing a WI tag are probably about the same as drawing one of the premier NM units. And obviously not nearly as many tags available in WI as CO...

I'm in...

From: longspeak74
01-May-18
Totally agree, Mike. I think it's really a positive to see this happening here.

From: Live2hunt
01-May-18
Yep, I gave my 10 bucks to the fund.

From: Jeff in MN
01-May-18
Don't think the odds are worth changing my state residency. It is a shame because I am at times so close to them.

01-May-18
I have not applied yet but I have a question. Do you earn a preference point for next year if you are not chosen this year for a tag?

From: grossklw
01-May-18
Nope, random draw, just like NM. I've spent 10 dollars worse.

01-May-18
Anyone want to guess how many applications the DNR gets for the 4 tags?

From: skookumjt
01-May-18
I'll be curious to see how many apply as well. For $10, I don't know why any serious hunter wouldn't roll the dice.

From: HunterR
01-May-18
If hunters were to harvest 4 elk, is there any concern that there might not be enough of a population left to keep the wolves fed?

From: RUGER1022
01-May-18
HEH HEH

From: RUGER1022
01-May-18
And yes I will apply for a tag even though its nothing but a phony feely touchy warm & fuzzy DNR plot to to help soften all their screwups .

From: Tweed
02-May-18
Is there any word out there that the applicant fees might be earmarked for more elk restoration?

From: Naturelives
02-May-18
I read on the DNR website all procedes from the application and license fees will go to elk management and research in Wisconsin

From: longspeak74
02-May-18
Ruger, you should keep your $10 if you feel so strongly that this is just a plot by the DNR.

02-May-18
$7 from the $10 go back to the state elk program from each application. Not sure what coffers the $3 goes toward. The RMEF will also have a tag that gets raffled off with the winner drawn at the state convention. Not sure how much of that money will stay in WI for the elk program.

From: skookumjt
02-May-18
The $3 is for the application fee and goes to the vendor that administers the Go Wild system just like the other tags. The RMEF tag revenue is to replace some of what they have invested in the elk reintroduction project. No public funds have gone into the project.

From: Jeff in MN
02-May-18
This was also included in the DNR notice about the drawing:

"Consistent with federal court rulings, the elk harvest quota is being shared equitably with the six Wisconsin Chippewa tribes."

I wonder if 'equitably' means 4 more tags for each tribe or do they draw and award 4 of the tribes one tag each. Or something else. Anyone know? Heck, I bet tribal members can also apply individually like we do. That would be the true equitable way to do it as long as they added however many tribal tags there will be to the draw pool for all Wisconsin residents. Did anyone see how many tags the tribes will get?

02-May-18
Jeff,

"Four of 10 tags will be distributed to Wisconsin resident hunters through a lottery drawing, with applications being made available on Tuesday, May 1. A fifth tag will go to a Wisconsin resident through a raffle drawing to be conducted by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF). The five remaining tags will be distributed to tribal members from the state’s six Chippewa tribes."

From: albino
02-May-18
Yes, the tribes get 5 tags. What's wrong with this picture? I did apply but I laughed when they asked if I wanted to donate an extra dollar. Kind of reminded me of the old panhandlers sitting on a street corner with dark glasses making more money per year than I did. OOPS, there goes my chance. lol

From: Glunker
02-May-18
So when is the bulging rut in WI? If the rut is Sept. why are bowhunters hindered by these dates?

From: Windlaker_1
02-May-18
Between Spearing Walleyes, opening Casinos, and now getting 1/2 the total tags allowed (how many dollars did the tribes contribute to the Elk restoration?), it sure looks to me like some races are a little more equal than the rest. And what do you think the tribes will sell their 5 tags for? I'm sure they won't be cheap.

From: RUGER1022
02-May-18
Longspeak . I'll try to win so I can hold a news conference , cut up the tag & explain to the reporters why I don't hunt animals that are tame or have lost some of its fear of humans .

From: skookumjt
02-May-18
The tribes footed the bill for a great deal of the costs for reintroduction actually. The agreement was established before it started.

From: Drop Tine

Never seen so many anti everything on a hunting web site.

My app is in and happy for a chance. Just like when I got my wolf tag. Being a part of history in my own little way.

From: Tweed
02-May-18
Always amazes me when people gripe about treaties that that US government made but blame the other party instead.

From: Jeff in MN
02-May-18
The tribes footed the bill? Yes but I wonder what federal agency they got the money from. Directly or indirectly.

"And what do you think the tribes will sell their 5 tags for? I'm sure they won't be cheap." I about spit my mouth full of Mountain Dew out when I read that. I can almost see that happening.

I am shocked no one has mentioned crossbows yet.

02-May-18
I can't wait to draw my elk tag and then establish my bait pile and claim my bull!

From: Jeffd

Who here plans to hunt with a crossbow if they draw a tag!?

Fixed it for ya Longspeak :)

What are the Clam Lake bugle dates? Has anyone encountered a bull wallow in WI. I know they feed in open parks out west on grasses, what do they graze here, road ditches, alfalfa fields? Must not be easy to glass.

From: Windlaker_1
02-May-18
Tweed, since the treaties were negotiated probably in the 1800’s, let them use torches, canoes & wooden spears. Not bass boats, halogen lights, etc. If it’s their tradition, then do it the traditional way.

From: albino
03-May-18
I don't know if it was the government that gave those rights to the tribes. They give them money. It was the mystery scrolls that were unearthed while the ink was still drying & then a bleeding heart split tail judge named crabby gave them everything. Be amazed tweed. I am allowed to gripe. I help pay for all the low lifes in the world. DT, I am glad you are happy with the status quo. Change is bad. Don't want improvements.

From: albino
03-May-18
Forgot to mention that they already shot one Elk. Maybe they will donate a tag. Or it could be like Bear tags. You can get one for a 6 pack. And don't say HOW.

From: Drop Tine
03-May-18
The tribes shot one Bull elk in retaliation of sort for the wolf season we had. While the news reported it was killed for ceremonial purposes. But truth be told it was the other reason.

03-May-18
DT The tribe has killed several. I live aprox 1 mile from where some of the elk are. And have had them on my land occasionally.

From: Jeff in MN
03-May-18
I thought they killed one elk just about every year except for early on. Plus don't forget about the moose that a tribal member legally shot last July.

Yes because many years later the govt is still oppressing those poor indians.

I spent half of yesterday shed hunting in an area with elk. I saw lots of deer droppings in one area, way more than I expected. I even saw 2 deer while in the woods and a few live ones along the road. Did not find any sheds. I finally realized the odds of finding an elk shed is probably worse than finding a needle in a hundred haystacks.

I am glad to hear that we will not be required to wear Hi-Vis clothing while bowhunting during that period. Earlier I was told that we had to wear hi-viz.

I was told that if you belong to the Rocky Mnt. Elk Foundation, you can buy as many applications/chances as you like? Any truth to this? I was told this at the Deer & Turkey Expo! Just wondering??????????????

Dang, how do you divide 5 Elk tags up equally among 6 tribes? Maybe Rock, Paper, Scissors? OK another trick question. What costs more $1,000.00 worth of Wisconsin Elk chances or 14 years worth of preference points in Utah? AND What's the difference because I am getting to old to do either.

From: Jeff in MN
15-May-18
Good point albino, I often wonder why I bother to continue applying for colorado and wyoming preferences points for the same reason.

From: Firsty

Wow that is really low, I thought they would have at least 100-200,000 applicants.

From: Jeffd
04-Jun-18
Much lower than I expected as well. Still not holding my breath.

04-Jun-18
I know a lot of guys who had no idea,,, most of them do not read,, ha ha,,, I bet half or more of my sportsmen club, had no idea,,,,,, no sweat off of me,,,,, I truly believe I will draw

From: albino
04-Jun-18
Surprising as they advertised it pretty well & sent out a lot of e mails plus had it in Go Wild. I was concerned that I would draw 2 Elk tags but I guess they wont let me. Ha. Still 38,000 ten dollar bills should add up. Maybe that is DNR math & numbers. I'm guessing they forgot a zero & someone will get a big Christmas bonus. Good Luck to all.

From: Treefarm
05-Jun-18
We all (whomever applied) have the same 0.0105% chance, or round 1/100th of a percent chance. 1:9500. Each of the 4 tags generated $95,000 income. I hope the one tag RMEF raffles generates more to help off-set all they have done to help. I enjoy watching the elk and see them very often.

From: skookumjt
05-Jun-18
Actually $66,500.

From: Myke
05-Jun-18
What if they do this again next year, with so much money given for so few tags. And again, and again, . . . I hope they can do a better job of raising elk with more money, as they are waaayyy behind Kentucky. (Maybe they can recruit the guy who runs the Kentucky elk herd away with some of this money?)

05-Jun-18

Just maybe a lot of hunters don't care to kill semi-tame animals .

From: skookumjt
06-Jun-18
Kentucky didn't have to suspend it's importation for more than a decade because of CWD, nor do they have a wolf population that is unsustainably high because of liberal activist judges.

06-Jun-18
not to hijack the thread, but I apply for Kentucky elk tags,,,, They want to bring wolves to that area, but there politicians and their DNR are totally against that idea

From: Tweed
06-Jun-18

From: upnorth

From: Live2hunt
06-Jun-18
Hmm, I guess I was unaware that Kentucky was giving out non-resident elk tags. How many do they give out?

From: Tweed
06-Jun-18
Live2Hunt- Non-residents are apportioned 10% of the tags in Kentucky.

06-Jun-18
Tweed,,,, the "they" are most of the pro wolf groups, that back the effort, which is being led, by attorneys for the Center of Biodiversity, who is the true enemy of the hunter and trapper,,,,,, You can look them up..... Here in our state we have the Timber Wolf Alliance, who strongly supports the "Center".....

Our problem is never going away, I have talked to personnel in Ky, they do not want to deal with anything we have,,,,,,

Legally hunting free range elk in Wisconsin, who ever thought the day would come!!! Hoping the Clam Lake herd and the Black River Falls herd continue to grow to the point that a September Bow only season can be allowed.

Are there any other locations in the state they are being or should be considered for a herd?

From: Tweed

I'm sure ill get roasted for this but would be great for tourism to have a small heard in the Kettle Moraine area.

Also would be cool to see them in the Nicolet in NE WI
