I heard after way too long of a dry spell, the annual monsoon season is here. To me a monsoon sounds like a tropical wet period. Hard to imagine a lof rainfall, must be a shift from no rain to a seasonal mild rain? Rain every day?

In the Southwest; it means the High Pressure is coming in (July and August) and pulling up moisture from Pacific and at the beginning this month out of the Gulf. So after the heating of the day the mountains have a fair chance to get a thunderstorm but they are mostly hit and miss storms. The bad news is those with Swamp Coolers (Evaporated Coolers) won't cool their houses down because the humidity is up for us. Nothing like the thunderstorms I grew up with in the Black Hills.
