folks, this is gettin serious
Kansas

Park all your vehicles outside and roll the windows down, if you own a convertible put it outside with the top down, if you have any alfalfa lay it down, if you have any roof work to do rip it off today!!!
Looks like rain on Monday! Wash you car!
Be careful what you guys wish for! ;-)
I was in the same boat (no pun intended) back in early June, here in central Iowa, as you guys are in now. We have since gotten 15”-30” of rain, some places considerably more. A good friend in southern Iowa is still bone dry.
Hope you guys get plenty, but not too much!
You're telling me! I'm a one man mowing operation for 30 yards on my days off and I'm drenched in sweat!
I'll go wash my vehicle this morning ! However I still remember June 30 of 2007, over a couple of days we got 22 inches of rain.
took the boat out of the garage and rinsed the dust off and parked it outside.
Rebuilding a deck over bare dirt this weekend. Only have son-in-law here for three days, and can only do mornings because of the heat. Should help, I’d think.
Going camping. just trying to do my part.
We’re camping too, hasn’t worked yet.
Looks like a good chance for bad storms tomorrow, at least in my neighborhood. Hope it spares my corn, it will be ready in a week.
In about 20 minutes yesterday afternoon, we got .65 Welcome, but will pay the price in extreme humidity today ?
"When it's dry we want it wet, when it's wet we want it dry, when it's hot we want it cold, when it's cold we want it hot, humans are a funny lot, always wanting what is not"
Left my car windows cracked and sun roof open. Thought I had it done. Storm got to 10 miles out and died. I blame it on closing the windows and sun roof when it appeared rain was imminent.
A couple weeks ago, I left an open trench for 3 days..installed conduit and wire, back filled,..rained that night, .80"
New ditch, left it open for 6 days, conduit and wire installed, rv pedastals complete, backfilled and it rained 1.6"..
Have a project i was planning to work on as i type...in back of my truck...its rained .60" since 5pm and still falling..
No complaints here..
NCK...Meads ranch, lincoln, mitchell, ottawa..cloud, clay, ..all gettin it good..
DoD is Dept of Defense.
About an inch here last night and more on the way today.
1.4 here,..local reports in the county of up to 5"
Barely an inch east of mulvane. Every time I walk down to my pond I cry a little bit, that thing is so low it's ugly.
Still high and dry in Montgomery county. Maybe tonight??
Barely an inch is a damn good rain out here.
Kaq232, any rain around Independence ?
Nada in our part of Larryville.
I was competing in the state FITASC shoot yesterday in west KC and we had to halt the shoot several times due to lightning. Got several showers out of the deal. I had to laugh, a flock of turkeys came out of the woods about 150 yards away and watched all the shooting. The black spot at the tree line is a jake
We had a nice isolated shower drop .4". Looks like the weather pattern is changing for next week.
Dmac, still very dry, missed out again last night.
Butler and Greenwood are getting some nice showers today
You gotta be freakin kidding me, I look at the radar again and rain all around and nothing on us. The last two weeks we’ve had rain north south east and west, and nothing on us. If your getting it, enjoy it, it’s really tough to not be jealous.
Headed out to water the garden.
For once we are living right. Around our area its one of the best summer's that I can remember for cattle out on grass. Had 2.4 Friday night
Spent 2.5 hours watering fruit trees this evening. That usually does the trick for rain, but doubt it’ll work this time, the umbrella over Montgomery county is made of iron right now.
Law, I drew us a rain turtle on hood of truck ! We should be good now
Looks like rain finally heading our way, I don't hardly see how it could miss us. Hopefully you folks out by Wichita don't suck it completely dry before it gets here again.
Heavy rain is about to Chautauqua County, keep coming!!
Didn’t even settle the dust. Montgomery county, where storms go to die....
We got to be getting rain this eve in Montgomery county ?
I’m west of Coffeyville, not a drop here. Looks like a small cell east of Independence. But the radar has lied all day long, so who knows??
Looks like a monsoon in central Kansas, will it make to us? Doubt it....
Coming down good finally!!
All that rain that has been missing you ksq... has been missing us too. Storm after storm has split and went around us. Very dry until this morning. We got 1.5!
It's almost unbelievable that the huge rain shield that was headed this way died before getting to us.
I’m looking forward to the next big rain that none of us is asking the others if we got any, one of those systems the covers the width of the whole state.
Ksq, I’m glad we got some . Rain turtle do the trick every time ! I’m planning on getting cameras out first weekend in Aug.
ksgobbler, did you not get any moisture from yesterday or today? It completely missed us yesterday but dumped 1.5 today.
Looks we got another nice shower last night, that makes us over an inch since yesterday morning. We could use some more, but we'll gladly take it!
That was a letdown. Less than .1
Somebody is getting pounded! That’s quite a cell 80 miles north of us.
Those cells brought alot of wind but very little rain. Topeka got hammered and picked up .12. A few miles north of me a roof got torn off a house and the pavement ws dry 15 min later when I got home. Farmer buddy is getting ready to bail corn.
tea cup sized hail in SW KS.
We picked up a nice 3/4" today.. Beans n milo looking great..dry land corn and sorghum doing well.. Pastures look green.. This afternoons 1st shower..another smaller storm came thru a few hrs after this one
Rain skipped us again but we got a great show.
Missed us too, it blew up literally less than 4 miles south of us across the line in OK. A small red cell that went right over Sedan, got pretty big once it crossed the state line. Seems like Sedan has been getting a lot of rains lately that we've missed, and we're only 26 miles east.
Little stuff popping up everywhere tonight.
Yet another round split and went around us. Hopefully another wave comes through and treats us a little better.
We’re the blue dot, otherwise known as the tyro desert.
We actually got .38 last night! Unexpected rain is great! Sorry for you guys that got missed again.
Not a drop here. Congrats scratch!
Wet got 4 little showers each not even enough to wet the concrete.
Looks like monsoon season is still going in NW Kansas! I bet Colby is ahead of Coffeyville in rainfall this year, unbelievable!
I could double my last post, only this time it’s all of western Kansas it looks like. Meanwhile eastern Kansas is still hurting. Once again, unbelievable!
The arid SE Colorado is doing their best rainforest impersonation tonight. I’m sure it will move into the amazon stretch of sw Kansas next. I hope all of you out there are keeping your heads above water. Mind sending a hundredth or two our way?
I wish I could send you some from the Northeast. We got 4"s in an yesterday and it rained steady for almost 2 days. We have several more inches expected in the next two days as well and we were in a drought until last week. I hope you guys get some relief soon!!! Shawn
Yeah I’ve been reading about the rains on the east coast. We supposed to have a pretty good chance this weekend of some significant rain in SEK. We’ll see...
One of the cracks in our yard. My wife got a flip flop stuck in one the other night.
Always interesting to measure how deep those cracks can be. During the drought 6-7 years ago a buddy out west had them over 20” deep!
They are 8" deep right now.
Article in KVOE about the north lyon county drought. Wonder when ehd will rear its head http://www.kvoe.com/news/item/38820-drought-in-north-lyon-county-early-shipping-of-cattle-among-domino-effects-of-minimal-moisture
Yet another system heading right to us and falling apart. At least they were right about this one and said we had no chance. Meanwhile, NC Kansas about to get another big rain.
Another wave goes over us with dropping anything, gets 5 miles south and let’s loose. Beginning to wonder what’s going on. :/
Flash flood warning.......for Goodland. Goodgrief
You got me looking so I pulled data. Keep in mind rains have been spotty. Goodland was up to a little over 14". Chanute has had 19" and is 6.22" below normal. Emporia is at 13" which is 9" short. If you go just north of emporia they have had 5" and their pastures didnt green up this spring. I was walking my field last night. Sericea is flowering a month ahead of schedule and all the native grasses have seed heads up. The milo I planted for quail while it is headed out the bottoms of the plant are drying out.
You’re right gobbler, while the drought is somewhat wide spread in eastern Kansas, locally it’s much more serious. What makes this really tough in SEK is we went almost four months (Nov-Feb) this winter without any significant rainfall. People don’t notice it as much then because everything is dormant, but we went into spring really dry.
In NE OK for a family reunion, it has been pouring down here for 2 hours. Sun shining back home though, yippeee!!! I despise weatherman, or weather persons, sorry for not being politically correct. So much for their forecasted 4” this weekend, losers.
What’s this wet stuff??? Hallelujah!
Ksq- a lot of Kansas went seven months with less than 1” of moisture. Glad you’re getting it. This is at least the fourth consecutive year many places have had more summer moisture than spring or winter. Sure would like to hunt in the snow this season.
Congrats guys! We got barely over an inch last night but it is very much appreciated!
I'm way below normal right now (compared to our 10yr average... which has been mostly drought).
We got 1.25" in the last 24 hours. Neighbor had the pond in the pasture with his cattle go dry and has been hauling water to them. He is moving them today.
Writer, are you talking about that white stuff we’ve told our kiddos about? If it weren’t for a couple Colorado ski trips, they would have only seen real snow in the movies!
I’m not sure what we got, but I’m guessing it was around an inch. Coffeyville, less than 15 miles away from us got almost 3”.
Is it true fawns born in drought years develop 25% less antler and body size than fawns born in wet years. I heard this on a 1970s era Mule Deer study.
On a psositive note the plums are ripe and we have been out picking.
We didn't have any Sandhills this year at all.
Another big system in western Kansas, PLEASE send it this was again!!
Looks like we getting some rain KSQ
Looked like we were going to get a nice soaking but as usual it fizzled out and we got a quarter inch.
Dmac, we have gotten some good rain the last couple of days. Gobbler, I feel for you because it looked like you were going to get some good rain too.
I hope it tastes as good as it looks.
We are hoping to get some more rain tomorrow. It’s simply amazing that NW Kansas is getting yet another rain right now. I feel for you guys in NE kansas.
Weve been placed on water restrictions so no more watering the garden. The Neosho is lowwwwww
Possible reports of ehd beginning to rumble around in NEK. Here in SEK a little rain, mostly shooting straight up central Kansas just like all year.
75 degrees, a falling barometer, cloud cover, and 94% humidity, how the heck is it not raining???
I went to feed the fish at 730 and was still kicking up dust in the sxs. It sprinkled about 8.
Dumped out .25 this morning
gobbler where are you at in se kansas we hunt so of sedan i thought there was quite abit of rain there latley
Coffey county in what has been dubbed the rain bermuda triangle.
No rain overnight on us, rain everywhere on the radar except over us with nothing coming our way. Typical...
Looks like it may make it tonight and I’m the am ? I’m. Onsidering driving up to Montgomery county and getting cameras out . Curious how everyone’s corn and beans are ?
Depends one family on I know on facebook posted a pic that had one scragly ear and they had to search for it. A buddy got a isolated timely rain on his corn and his ears look like something out of Iowa. Alot of the corn is being cut for silage or bailed locally.
Dmac, beans looking pretty good. Corn is varied, it was so hot back in May it stressed it some, along with a couple dry spells the last couple of months. Montgomery county is tough to figure, northern Montgomery county is getting tons of rain as I type this, but southern, not so much. The rain has been more localized this summer than I’ve ever seen.
We got .2 inch yesterday and small shower this morning. But... it's been cool and cloudy which is very different than most Augusts! So... while we are still way behind on rain for the yr things don't look too bad. Pastures are maybe the greenest I've ever seen them in August. It's kind of weird. For you guys that it's skipping over completely I hope you end up with a couple of gully washers for sure. It would be nice to fill the ponds before winter hit.
Well it showed 4" in southeast this morning did it show up ?
We got an inch and and half at our house, not sure what our property got.
i would never had thought it had been that dry up there by watching weather down here
Bet you get some in SE today its heading your way
It torrential rain 2 miles north of us with another storm 5 miles east. Sun is out here. Weve gotten nothing.
We've gotten several storms today. Best August I've ever had in 15 years of my mowing business.
Drove to Hutch and back today. From my observation more corn was out than was still standing. Most had the usual small strip for the adjuster. Hoping to get rain tomorrow. Buddy cut his thursday. Moisture was 13%
We’re getting absolutely dumped on right now, hopefully it makes it north to you guys still hurting.
Tell me about it KSQ , I had trailer loaded with 4 wheeler, bale blind , stands and cameras. planned on leaving out early this am . I take the good with the bad , maybe I get up that way during the week .
I don't know how much we got in Manhattan, but it rained heavily all day yesterday, was off and on all night, and poured again this morning, quite a bit of flooding in the ditches. More rain in the forecast for Thursday.
PT county, last two days two and a half inches, bring it on.
3.25 here Saturday then some more yesterday. Got more coming on Wednesday and Thursday. Had a couple inches a week ago today. I have never seen this much moisture in all the years I have lived out west. Hope we don't get it all now then have dry spell in October when we really need it.
Looks you guys in NEK are getting a good soaking this morning!
1.75 so far. Farmers are complaining now cause their corn is laying over but its too muddy to cut. Cant make everyone happy
I got 2.5" of rain in 90 minutes this morning with more on the way.
6" total today. Pond is full and overflowing.
6" plus at the farm in less than 3 days. All after planting 5 acres of a clover blend. LOl!
Last night ALL NIGHT, don't know how much, the gauge only goes to 7".
Manhattan got over 9 & 1/2 inches of rain last night. Lots of the town had significant flooding. They had to do 60+ water rescues today, and many homes/vehicles were flooded. At least 300 people were displaced from their homes. My uncle owns a doublewide in Redbud Estates that I used to stay in (for his kids/ other family who were students at K-State) and the high water mark was over 3 feet, washed away almost all of the skirting. The trailer park just looks like a giant mud flat. Looks like there is a lot more rain to come this week.
Dave, You started this, you need to slow it down now!
KDWPT headquarters in Pratt got it.
OK folks lets end it here fini
Send it southeast! The ponds on the home farm in Chautauqua county are still 8' low.
I WARNED you guys at the beginning of this thread!
Mother nature is fickle. 2.5" here so far. I pulled trail cams along the creek so I wouldnt lose them.
I had to mow my dried up pond a few weeks ago. Still dry. We could use a little bit of that rain. Feel sorry for all the folks dealing with the flooding. Not fun.
Last summer when I worked in KC it seemed like that area was getting all the rain.
my gauge only hold's 5" and it's overflowing today.
Sounds a little strange after the deluge a few weeks ago, but I’ve had food plots in here in SEK for almost two weeks and they haven’t germinated yet. All the rain yesterday missed us completely again.
I thought we were getting a bunch today headed your way but looks like it's gonna stay north of tulsa. How dry is it no. of sedan
The subsoil moisture is good I would bet, it's just getting a little dry on top. It would be really nice to have a .5-1" rain. Winter rye and clover are pretty resilient, so I'm not too worried yet. Rain is in the "forecast" the end of next week.
Well getting back in the same boat again in SEK. The latest rains have missed us. I worked our last plot last night and was surprised how little subsoil moisture there was. Nothing much in the forecast except an increasingly pitiful chance of rain tonight.
Missed another nice rain this afternoon, stayed south of us.
Okay...
It's officially getting serious now!
Past 24hrs, lots of my spots are "in the red"
Weve had 5.5" since saturday. Rain gauge was down friday but people around got 1.5" so lets call it 7". Cottonwood at plymouth set to have the 3rd highest crest on record. Silver lining is the creek here will be up for a month. If it doesnt get too high it will force any deer trapped on this side to walk by me. Downside lots of beans and corn will be lost between Cottonwood falls and John Redmond. Also Flint Hills NWR will have alot of leevees for their marshes blow out.
A couple years ago I had some nice bucks on cameras when the lake flooded. One buck was even crossing some water to check his scrape on an island. A week later we were hunting wood ducks in that exact spot in flooded timber
We got 8 3/4" in the last two days. They are calling for more heavy rain tomorrow here outside of Paola
The biggest rains continue to miss us in Montgomery county. This time I’m kind of glad. We have received about 3” the last 5 days.
Send it to Montgomery/ Chautauqua counties, ponds are still low!
As of this morning we've gotten 7" out of this system. It will be nice to have all the ponds full and the creeks flowing going into winter for a change!
My total South of Cottonwood Falls as of this morning is 7.5". The South Fork of the Cottonwood River is across the county road just SE of my place. The corn crop was hurt bad by dry weather and the soybeans do not need flood water. Hopefully, it shuts off for while.
Neosho at Americus set to have the 2nd highest crest on record.
Not good! I've got a spot right there by Americus, with both sides of the river...won't be going there for awhile I reckon.
If any of you guys have free time during these floods it might be a good time to spot and stalk. Alot of deer will be displaced from their normal bedding and feeding routines. Scout from a high point like around Marion or Kanopolis and you never know what might happen. Deer seem to move more during floods. Good luck!
Fall River on the west side of Eureka. This is usually a riffle you can wade across 30 feet below the bridge
Well western KS is flooded, believe it or not. Highways closed. Going to be a week or so before I can even get to any of my hunting spots, that is if it quits raining. More in the forecast Thursday and Friday. Some roads won't be driveable for weeks.
We are now up to 11 1/2" in just less than 4 days with more rain forecast tonight. Dave, call it off for a while at least.
Ben,
This is really something! Stay safe.
These are ones I remember most 1998, 2008 and now 2018.
We are right at eleven inches since Friday. We don't get that much in a year sometimes. Rain again Friday and Saturday then snow on Sunday.
A few weeks ago we had 5 and a half till the gauge ran over, two days later dumped two more. Yesterday dumped four and 2 and a half more in today. I'm callin it OFFFFFFFF>
It’s snowing in Colby right now???
About dang time Dave! I already have 8 inches this month of October. I'm starting to grow webbing between my toes.
