One of my most favorite threads of the year hasn't been started yet! I personally don't have a tag this year, but love seeing everyone's photos of bear on bait, and once the season gets here, love seeing harvest photos. Please post 'em if you got 'em!

I do not bear hunt. It is just something I have never really wanted to do. This showed up multiple time on our camera. Same camera every time. All different time of the day/ night.

You might want to move that rock out of the picture frame, it doesn't look natural.

DT, game cam in a tree on your driveway? I have a really dangerous neighbor so I have cameras all over the place. A month ago I had a contractor pulling a 20 foot trailer pull into my driveway and realized he was in the wrong place. Instead of backing up 30 yards he tried to do a U turn where there was no room. The trailer fender and wheel took out a 4" pine tree. Pics from two of the game cameras caught him. Name and phone number of the company he worked for on the door of the truck. He stopped, got out of the truck, and looked at what he did, never went to the house to leave a note or anything. He figured he had a clear escape. Then 3 days later when the sheriff called the number his boss had not been told about it either. Not cool.

Bears breeding season is coming to an end, captured this nice boar courting this Sow. In the picture look how she is looking in the direction of where the boar is, in a few minutes he steps out (video).

In this video you get a better look at the size of the boar compared to the Sow.... his patients are being tested as he is getting a little anxious to breed.

Some big boars have a case of the sarcoptic mange. I see this every year right at the end of the rut.

Last year and the year before I had this giant at my baits. He's the biggest boar I've ever had on camera. A couple of videos of him the year before. I know one thing he hated raccoons.

Anyone experiencing a real slow down in bear activity at your baits. Mine have died. I'm hoping with all types of berries ripe and acorns falling is the reason. I've never seen it this slow before.
From: MF
30-Jul-18
Don't know what area you are talking. No slow down here with the baits (N Bayfield County) I can put the 10 gallon legal limit and next day its all gone, but remember Hoot...baiting activity & placing more bait stations has picked up, this happens every year, people wonder where all the bears have gone. As far as natural food sources not all areas are the same, berries are drying up here if not eaten, acorns have been spotty, black berries aren't even ripe yet here. The pin cherry picture is from last week.

I've never seen a lull during this time of year, but ours have been slow too. I was talking to a guy last week and he asked if our baits were slow because he was talking with another group and they have been struggling to have their baits hit. Ours seem to be doing slightly better than theirs and are 10 miles, or more, apart. I was thinking that it was just a local thing happening, until I talked to the person last week.

This second picture is from this past week, SAME TREE... the bears, raccoons are cleaning them up, but my bait stations near by have not slowed down

Not trying to hijack this thread. This is not a bear but I figured the bear guys would know especially if any of you run dogs - approx. how big is the bobcat in this pic?

I'm seeing a lot of acorns around me (finally). In Price county, I know I was doing well picking Blueberry's the past couple weeks and there are a few raspberry also. I have not set my Bear bait in area C yet, lost my bait contact and now have to buy it somewhere. I'm sure I will be hit until the week prior to opener then nothing. Will probably be the last year I apply and try for bear.

Hey Hoot, you've been doing this a long time, how big is that bear?
From: Drop Tine
30-Jul-18
Happy, the average Bob in WI. is 30/35 lbs. There have been some that have reached 50 lbs. but they are rare. There was a retired gamewarden that got one in my area a few years ago that reached that mark.

MF - I'm talking around my place. I've never seen all the berries so ripe at the same time and acorns falling so early. I did switch up my bait yesterday and eight bears in at one bait yesterday afternoon and evening and a good bear at one of my other baits.

Love finding money when walking im the woods.
Looks like you might have found a bear print too!
From: Chris S

If that foot print is from the bear that dropped the cash you better just leave it for him to come back and pick up. Looks like a fight you won’t win if he finds out you have his money.

Hoot the sarcopic mange you talk about, do they usually grow their coat back by next month. I have a decent boar coming to my bait but I don't think I want a rug the way he looks now.

My personal opinion, (most) of those hairless rub marks are from bears coming out (denning) of hibernation, you see allot of bears shot with rubbed hides in Canada during spring hunts. Not once in all the years of assisting bear hunters have we had a bear with parasites or a rubbed hide. Just my two cents

I would be more concerned with the wind direction than rain. In a all out storm or down pour they will hunker down, but if its just raining its just another day for them, they still have to eat. They might be a little skiddish at times with all the extra noise associated with the rain etc. I would rain gear up and hunt.
From: Tweed

MF- interesting. I figured deer would be skiddish with the extra noise from showers but never thought a bear would care much

Only real down sides of rain when bear hunting is the comfort level for the hunter and risk of rain washing out some of the blood trail. But a well hit bear seldom goes very far.
Good luck to everyone with a tag. Take your time and shoot straight. Hope to hear my phone ringing by 7:00 PM on opening day.
