Rut Nut, aka Perry Hartmann was bitten in the lower leg by a rattlesnake while hiking at Benezette Pa yesterday. He was life flighted to Pittsburgh hospital. Is on the 3rd dose of antivenom.

Oh man, prayers sent for a full recovery Perry.
I guess you will pass on the rattle snake catching trip on your next journey to the farm. Just stick to deer hunting.
Your guide was 4 for 4 this year. 5 for 6 if you count turkey hunters.
Thanks guys! Yes- snakes SUCK!!!!! : (
New handle for Perry...."SnakeBit" :^P Get better brother, the season is coming.
WOW. Sorry to hear that Perry. Hope you get well quickly. Will keep you in my prayers.
After you recover I'll ask if the snake lived after biting you.. :)
Glad to hear your doing better Perry.
Rumor has it the snake got very sick too:)
What's the big deal Rut? They don't hurt ya.. LOL
You got prayers from over here, Perry...
Hey Rut. I’ve backpacked the Quehenna trail up there. The rattlers are numerous and mean. Like they own the trail. My daughter was freaked out when we happened upon a 4 ft green colored one crossing the trail. Glad you are doing well.
LOL Roy! : )
Brian- nasty for sure! Never rattled- just struck lightning quick. I stepped over a small creek to get water and it must have been on the other side. Never saw it til it was too late! : (
I see snake proof boots or chaps in your future, Perry.
How you feeling? When they discharging you?
Still lot of pain, but better. On my 4th dose of anti-venom. Will be here at least til tomorrow
Next purchase will be snake proof chaps!!!
oh buddy, sorry to hear about it. Feel better and get home soon. I'll talk to you later.
Glad to hear you are getting better. How far in were you when it happened?
Glad your ok Perry!
I've seen Lots of snake bites over the years. My brother and his buddy use to do all those snake hunts all summer years ago. His buddy has been bit 17 times by rattlers and copper heads. He's not sharpest individual I know!!:)
Those folks are friggan NUTS Ben!!!!! This ain’t no joke!!!!! Just got up for first time with a walker. Like learning to walk all over again. That venom messes you up big time!
Jethro- I was 2.3 miles from my car. Last half mile back was interesting to say the least! ;-)
Wishing you the very best, Perry.
Perry thank God Pittsburgh had anti venom! When my buddy had gotten bitten in his finger he ended being life flighted twice and finished with 13 vials of av. No pittsburgh area hospital had av! He got 6 from Johnstown and 7 from Butler. At that time the only ones that had av. Ill say a prayer for you for sure as I hope you recover nicely.
Just got off the phone with ol' Snakebite, lets just say that I'm glad it wasn't 3.3 miles! Get better bro!
You're in my prayers, Perry! Get better soon, my friend! Crazy situation, but so glad you made it out of the woods.... literally and figuratively! You'll be back up to snuff before ya know it!
Thinking of you Perry, Hope you feel better soon. Mick
When I get home I will tell the whole story. It is unbelievable in so many ways!!!!!!!
In fact, I just made it thru another “crisis”! And learned a valuable lesson. Don’t try to take a warm shower seated on one of those shower chairs after a snakebite! Apparently I pushed some of the remaining snake venom in my thigh/backside down to my lower leg and foot! And it started eating away again at the tissues! I swear it was worse than when I first came in. And worst part was dr and nurse did not believe me! I knew something was not right! I think when I started swearing and told them I am not a p***y , that I walked 2 and a half miles on a snakebit leg, they finally got the message!!! ;-)
And THANKS for all the prayers folks! Don’t know what I would have done without them!
Hey Rut Nut
I'm gladl you are recovering!
The gods were on your side.
I can see them trying to limit pain meds for a bad back or sprained elbow but you're in there for something far more serious. But the pain is one thing, the tissue damage is the main concern. The heat from the shower will thin the venom and get the blood moving faster. The heat might even aggravate already damaged nerves. Go slow brother, try to talk one of the cute nurses to give you a sponge bath instead of a hot shower ;^)
Yep- think the heat opened up blood vessels and got the venom moving in the wrong direction. Should have gone the sponge bath route- definitely have a couple cute young nurses! ;-)
Got another dose of anti-venom after it happened, and more pain meds and finally died down after 90 min or so. Hopefully the last time for that fiasco!
Prayers for a speedy recovery my friend ,sounds like quite an adventure you were lucky to come through as well as you did..gonna throw an extra prayer to the snake cant imagine the taste that left in his mouth..Get well Rut!
I dunno, Perry.
Them cute nurses washing ya could get the ole heart pumping too much:)
LOL Brian! he was shaking his head back and forth like WTH???!!! ;-)
Roy- LOL! : )
Thanks Burbonator!
Gheeez Perry. Just got a new pair of snake boots and gave my others to my dad. You never know. I can pick up on the black phase but the yellows are tough to see. I’m glad you are okay! Prayers for your continued recovery.
Btw, I have caught 4 rattlers rising to strike. Don’t bet on them buzzin.
Just spoke to Rut and he is hurting. This was not like you used to see in the movies where the cowboy sweats it out overnight and gets on his horse the next day. A couple got his gear back to the local police. He might go home this Wed but probably miss several weeks of work. On his 7th round of AV. Family was there and is helping out. Keep thinking good thoughts!
God speed Perry! Prayers sent buddy.
Thanks for the update Art.
Rut Nut's Link
You’re right Jon- those yellow phase are hard to see- blend right in with their surroundings! I must have stepped right next to it and never saw it til it was striking me. I spotted a dark color phase a couple yrs ago while hiking. That was pretty easy to see.
My roommate said I made the paper, so I checked. Weird to see your story in print! ;-)
Thanks for all the well wishes guys!
What hospital are you in, Perry?
This is what venom does(back of leg)
Uncle Buck saw it on the tv news
I was thinking exactly what Roy said.
Rut Nut aka Snake Bite... :) Are you bringing autographed pictures to the camp out?? As you know you are famous now. I get picture 1 of 1000... Feel better Snake Bite.
prayers out for a full recovery and no lasting ill effects....
LOL! Ed- think I am gonna try to get an endorsement deal on some snake boots! ;-)
Thanks guys! Talked to the toxicologists this morning. Learning more about snakebites than I ever cared to know! : (
oooouuuuuch, freaking ouch. Man that looks bad buddy.
Well, there must have been some venom hiding in the tissue somewhere the dr said. This is what happened after a 50’ walk to bathroom and back with PT! : (
Waiting to hear if they need to restart anti-venom
Wow rut.
So you were off the anti-venom, meaning it was stablilzed?
Get Well Perry! Good Luck Brother!
It works the other way around Perry.........wear the boots while you are getting bit.........it shows how well they work. LOL.
Jesus Rut!!!! Holy cow! man, get well soon. Theres gonna be real meaning at 5C when you say I cant shoot a deer. I'm snake bit!
Get well man, Bill V
LOL! Yeah, thanks guys!
Yes Jon- toxicologists thought I didn’t need anymore. But they said that’s the bad part about getting bit in the leg- more tissue for the venom to “hide” in. When I lowered my leg to walk, it came out of hiding and started attacking more tissue- this is nasty stuf!!!!!!!!! : (
Can you magic marker U.B.P. on your leg if your gonna post this many pics? minus well get some advertising out of this deal :)
bill v
Holy hell. Sorry to hear this. If you are still there on Wednesday, I'll come see you.
Damn brother that looks painful...hoping things get better for you from here on out.
Hey Ed, maybe Rut's new handle should be "SnakeBait"
Rut, glad to see that you are doing better. Godspeed to your recovery. Rattlers are bad dudes that most do not take seriously enough. I have worn out about 8 pairs of snake boots in the last twenty years and your situation reminds me that I need a new pair.
Wishing you well from Wisconsin.
Thanks so much guys- can use ALL the prayers! I had heard snakebites are nasty and very painful, but I had no clue!!! ;-)
Snake proof boots/chaps I had thought about, but never gave serious consideration since I’ve only encountered like 5 poisonous snakes in my lifetime! Only seen 3 rattlers and one got me. NO WAY I ever want to go thru all this again! So first purchase will be boots/chaps!
Once things calm down I will do a thread on my experience and hopefully some folks will learn from it! Lot of mis-information out there about snake bites.
Holy smokes, not sure I ever met you rutnut, but I have read your posts for a long time. Looks like quite an ordeal your going through, prayers coming your way from central Pa for a quick and compltete recovery
geez Rutt, I hope that's the last of it.
Yep- me too Spider! Me too! ;-)
Ron- could not have dreamed of going thru anything like this in a million years!
Whoa!!! Glad you are doing well man.. that is some nasty looking stuff that i do not want to go through..
I have only seen one rattler and like you that never gave me pause to buy snake boots, but your pictures above have me considering them...
Get well!
Prayers for you. You are one tough due and have the good fortune to match. Don't rush back.
Rut
I’ve have had and done a good bit of research on snake boots.
Leading the pack is Irish setter vaprtrek and lacrosse venom.
I have the Irish setters. They are so light, and waterproof. They have quick laces too but being waterproof they do get really hot. I’ve never tried the lacrosse but read they are very good.
Hopeful for your continued progress.
Dang man that is some tough luck, glad you are recovering. A real eye opener, I get a little too careless in snake country. I think it's time I order some snake boots.
Yikes!!!! So I take it the August backpacking trip is off? LOL Hope you get well soon. Man!!!!
So, I'm still considering a September backpacking trip. I have a pair of Rocky snake boots. I may wear them.. LOL
I have always thought I was pretty tough and could handle just about anything. But this is definitely testing my limits! ;-)
Having to keep my leg elevated for days on end and basically having constant (severe) pain for days is new to me.
The drs came in and said basically it is a waiting game at this point. They need to see the platelets bottom out and then start to rise. Normal is 150k. When I got to hospital they had dropped to 7k. They rose until yesterday when crashed again to 12k. This morning I am at 16k Dr said it could start rising or drop again. They won’t release me til they see a steady and constant rise. The danger is you cannot clot when platelets are this low. A slight bump on head or a fall could be fatal.
They decided not to give any more anti venom because that would just set everything back and complicate things. And they do not try to boost platelets because any remaining venom would just attack them again. So just need to give my body time to bounce back on it’s own.
Optimistic for a Thurs discharge.............but no promises.
Would appreciate more prayers for a thurs d/c and steady recovery!
Rutnut, Praying for your recovery and God's wisdom for the doctors to make correct decisions on treatment. God's Mercy and Healing for you my Brother.
Prayers continue Perry for a full and speedy recovery and return home. I read your post on the main forum and you are very fortunate.
OK Thursday it is. Hang tough my friend it adds color to your resume.
Here you go Bill- after my daily walk to bathroom ;-)
Hey Rut, if things don't quite work out, can I have your bow? :)
LOL! You’ll have to take that up with my wife! ;-)
Get well soon Rut. I’m a UBP member from out of state and a regular in PA when the leaves turn. Prayers and best wishes from New England. (great superbowl by the way). Take care.
You're left-handed aren't you Perry? :)
Hey Perry RC told me about your bite the day after it happened. I was one of those crazy people who did the snake hunting and sacking competitions. I've seen a lot of bites and I think you got lucky. It looks like he dosed you pretty good. A lot of times folks will get a dry bite but he gave you his all. I was just out hunting Friday and Saturday just to see them. I'm glad you're recovering but keep an eye out for the black phase ones too you would be surprised how well they blend in sometimes. Take care and good luck with your recovery
Hey Rut Prayers from the Sked family. I’m currently in Erie dealing with a medical crisis with my wife’s mom. She is at UPMC Hamot. Hoping your out soon. God Bless
Ok, so I have an upcoming Utah elk hunt in a unit known for rattlers. Are there anti venom kits that can be carried for protection. Any other things other than boots or watching out. Stalking could be extra dangerous.
Phil- Shut up! ;-)
Bowkevin- you just ain’t “right” man!!! ;-)
B-sked- prayers for your MIL!
Glunker- once I start feeling better I will do a thread on HOW TO snakebite. I am getting great info from UPMC Toxicologists
Basically they said I did the right thing- don’t mess with snake OR bite! No tournaquit, no sucking venom. Use the time wisely to get to HELP ASAP!!!! One of the reasons I am so messed up is it took hours to get the first dose of anti-venom! : (
I hope you start making platelets and get out of there soon.
Sounds like you were very lucky even though it is bad enough.
I’m thinking if I got bit like that I’d probably just have a heart attack on the spot. I absolutely hate snakes. All snakes.
The main thing as crazy as it sounds is to stay as calm as possible and get medical attention asap. Also snake proof boots or chaps. I carry a kit that you can buy at Walmart in the camping section for about $15 and it can help
Phil- I always thought the same thing! Don’t even like to see them on TV- creeps me out!!! If it had hung on, I probably would have freaked out or had an MI! But like Kevin said I knew I had very little time, so just started walking at a steady pace trying to keep HR as low as possible. It took just over an hr to go 2.2 miles. My fear was I would pass out or leg would quit functioning before I got back to the trailhead. I kept checking my pulse as I walked and breathing, but they were not affected Thank God! But extremities (fingers/toes) were tingling, lips swelled and started to tingle and head was spinning.
Rut Nut's Link
I was just recommended these chaps by a PGC Employee friend that works in the area
Gonna get the camo model
Glunker, a Sat phone. One of the big problems Rutt faced was that he couldn't get a signal on his cell. A Sat phone will get a signal. Getting help fast is the most important thing.
Dude, an hour... man that's a long time. With my meds, I wouldn't have made it.
Spider- it was over 2 hrs until I got to Altoona and got first dose! ;-)
I’m leaning towards Garmin In Reach. Has an SOS button. Once you hit it it goes to emergency center that dispatches help to your location(shown on gps) If I had this, could have saved a lot of time and difficult walk!
It’s a good chunk of change initially,($400-$450) but then you can pay monthly- only $15 or $20 per month when activated.
Wait, you are in Altoona?
We had walkie-talkie/sat phones when we hunted antelope near Gillette, WY. Pretty cool.
He is in Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.
Jon- I was only in Altoona long enough to get blood work and first dose of Anti-venom. Then they put me on another chopper to UPMC
Rut Nut I’m hoping you recover quickly and I’m sending prayers your way. I hope you never have this happen again. I wanted to share this free and useful app regarding the do’s and don’ts of snakebites as many people aren’t aware of what they should do. It also lists the nearest hospitals, which carry antivenin and has a venom tracker, which reminds you to take a picture every minutes. Please pass this along as it may save someone’s life. https://www.crofab.com/SnakeBite911/SnakeBite911-Public
2hrs. They say you should get the first dose within a half hour if possible. Yeah, getting through to emergency on the spot probably would have saved you a lot of pain this week. I've been thinking of getting a sat phone for a while. The sos button sounds like a nice thing and that's really not a bad price, they can get expensive... but having it in an emergency is priceless. Especially if you're gonna be in potentially dangerous situations where there will be no cell service.
EMT5's Link
Here’s another tracking device with SOS capabilities and it’s much cheaper. I know a logger that uses this. He had an emergency and it saved his life.
Here is a picture of a 10 point at your tree stand from this week. He is almost in the shooting lane. Hope it makes you feel better.
EMT5's Link
It appears that I put the link for the SnakeBite911 app in the wrong place. Sorry about that! Hopefully it works this time.
Glad to hear you're recovering.
I'll throw you a pint of mine... I have Leiden factor V... - ie: sticky blood. (all I can hear is "you got a pint of Kramer in ya").
Thanks so much EMT! That looks like a great app. Just downloaded it and will have plenty of time to check it out in the coming days! ;-)
Looks like I will remain in here thru the weekend.
Art- you shitn me???? Chise stand????
The Spot works great. You can send different types of messages. Our son has used one for years while traveling all over in sea kayaks from Seattle to Alaska, hiking all over the west and sailing in the Carribbean. It lets you send an "All OK" message with map coordinates to reassure folks at home. That can populate a Google map so folks know right where you are. It also has a choice for "Need Help" but not an emergency and can send an SOS message.
Another trick I learned being that most chaps only protect your lower legs is if you are in high brush or ferns is to wear snake boots and pull the lower part of the chaps above the the boots and tape them up with wide electric tape. It might look stupid but it beats a bite to the thigh. Also if you're not trying to catch snakes carry a walking stick and beat the brush in front of you so they know you're coming. You never know if one could be lying on a log or rock up off the ground. The snake that bit you was probably caught by surprise
You’re welcome Rut Nut! The app is easy to navigate. Sorry to hear that your going to be in there for the weekend. However, your in good hands.
Thanks Phil! I will check out SPOT as well.
MY plans usually do NOT Jive with the good Lord’s. ;-) But I know it is where I NEED to be.
I would just like to thank all the First responders that helped save my life- there were a LOT of good people that played a part. THANK YOU just seems so inadequate right now................,..., but it’s all I got! ;-)
There's an 8 and 9 hanging around too. I have pics of the 10 back on the other side of the pond. Plus two big bears.
When ya getting out, Perry?
Hopefully first week of Nov!
There goes the 5C hunt. :)
Meant out of the hospital:)
Bob McArthur's Link
I just ordered a pair of chaps, whattya think?
Ya need something to cover yer big A$$...
LOL
Oh, LMBO Roy!!!!!!! I thought you meant when am I getting out(to Art’s to hunt ;-)
I’m hoping to get home by Monday. May or may not happen. Just waiting for platelets to start going up. Got a ways to go..............
I’ll be at 5C one way or the other! Maybe Dan and Joe will set me up in one of their primo blinds and let me use the DHP Crossbow?! ;-)
Wish you the best and quick recovery !!! Prayers to you and your family !!!
Thank you!!!!!
Well, look who showed up at my door bringing “survival food” today! None other than Bowsite’s own rust4brains and son Mitch! ;-)
I don’t know if I was happier to see them or the food! Oh, who am I kidding? After 6 days of hospital grub, it was the FOOD! LMBO! : )
But seriously guys, you will never know what it meant to me!!!!!!!! Bowsiters are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!
They even brought me some reading material!
Perry my brother, Prayers continue from my family for a quick recover.
But if that doesn't work out, the DHP committee is prepared to send you on an all expense paid, trophy slick head hunt in either Berks, Lehigh or Northampton county, sometime near the end of September :)
Great seeing you too, just wish that it wasn't like this.
I'll just leave this right here...a little gift that I gave Rut this evening. :)
Anyone in the Western PA area, please consider stopping in to see Rut, he's stuck in a little room, but he did have a cute nurse this evening.
Very nice! Good for rust and Mitch!
Thanks Pat- I’m STILL laughing!!!!!!!! : )
So happy that you are ok. We were just up Benezette with the grand kids. Praying for a speedy recovery!
Thanks Pchie!
I see I missed a few posts here. First, Bob- I think you got the wrong page there Buddy!
Bowjo- LMBO!!!!!!!! Sept 20-22???!!! ;-)
All joking aside- I just looked at the calendar and I have exactly 8 weeks to get “ready” for our UBP 5C Hunt. This is now my persinal goal! Dr. Said I could still be dealing with swelling for up to 5-6 weeks. If I can get back to work in 4 weeks, I should be able to take off the needed days for this hunt. May be unrealistic, but I don’t care. I was always one to set lofty goals! And realistically, I don’t see myself sitting around for more than a month! ;-)
Of course, all else fails I will come down to see everybody and enjoy the pig roast. But my GOAL will be to participate fully! It will give me something to “shoot for”! (Pun INtended! ;-)
And hey, maybe I could even do an informational seminar of some sort. Can anybody think of an appropriate topic???!!! ;-)
"And hey, maybe I could even do an informational seminar of some sort. Can anybody think of an appropriate topic???!!! ;-) "
how about a seminar on surviving hospital food! Or maybe one on how to annoy nurses! :^)
I feel sorry for the nurses! Perry has been texting me since 6:30 this morning. He just said the nurses play with his leg all day. I told him maybe he should have gotten bit a little higher:)
Oh Lord.........................
On a serious note- just got word platelets were still low this morning. This is getting OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Should know more when drs come in later, but not the news I was hoping for.............
I had sinus surgery in March and lost a good bit of blood during recovery. 2 nights I awoke to blood running out my nose and down my throat. Ended up in ER. My platlet count was good but doc said it can take 2-3 weeks for them to replenish. Hope they rise for you soon.
Yep. They’re just trying to get them above 20k AND steadily rising. Yesterday was 12k and nurse said they went down a little this morning
We keep hearing about the cute nurses but only see pictures of Snakebit!! How about turning that camera around and letting us see the people who have to put up with your nonsense? LOL. We've seen you before.
LMBO!!!!! I’ll see what I can do! ;-)
Here ya go Griz Apparently UPMC only hires “pretty young things” for their staff! ;-)
Looks like you're keeping your spirit up perry. Of course I'm sure the nurses help lol. Get well soon
Kevin- I am just SO HAPPY to still be among the LIVING!!!!!!!! : )
I started feeling sorry for myself this morning when I found out my platelet level had gone down, prolonging my stay. Then I remembered I was still breathing! ;-)
God has a way of keeping things in perspective!
Much better than looking at your scary leg!
Tell her to wear shorts tomorrow, Perry:)
lol you now know you have many friends who are praying for you and wishing you the best
Kevin- it has been absolutely overwhelming!!!!!!!!!!!
I am SO blessed!!!!!!!!!
That bite looks pretty high? I might have to re-evaluate my boots, sure looks like a bite like that would be at the top of them. hope your doing well.
Could use more prayers folks! Been rough this morning- they went to take blood for platelet count and they had lots of trouble! Could not get a third vial. Had to stick me 4 times(2 in each arm). Thank God The last time worked. This happened early on(day 3?) but I was in so much pain from leg, I barely felt the needle sticks. Now that leg is getting better, I feel the sticks.
Just praying platelets jumped and I can get out of here!
Apparently the venom is affecting the veins as they start give blood, then “blow”. Still fighting that evil serpent- literally AND figuratively! : (
Still pulling for you Perry. This is one tough battle that you are going through.
Shade- I measured it the other day. 13” from the bottom(sole) of my foot. If I was getting boots, I would need the 17” model.
Thanks Tobyon and shade! Hanging in there, but it IS rough! This Timber Rattler venom is particularly nasty stuff!!! : (
Thanks stick!
Shade- the turtle skin gaiters appear to be 20” if I am reading it correctly.
Just heard from nurse platelets went up Thank God- now my guess is Dr will want to see it one more time tomorrow and I may get sprung on Sun. That’s what I’m praying for! ;-)
Will keep praying for a speedy recovery. Good thing they are keeping you and not sending you home until they're sure. I know it's miserable but don't push getting out.
stay positive man.. it will be a distant memory soon enough.. you'll have a great "tough guy" story to tell the grand kids at some point..
stay strong
ben
We will be down there this afternoon. I can't bring beer in there, right? LOL.
LOL! No Art- think that would mess up the pain meds! ;-)
Well, Dr is very pleased! Going to check platelets later today and if good, will cut me loose tomorrow. Now only issue is I had a driver lined up-of course only day he could NOT take me is tomorrow. But keeping faith.................HE got me this far! ;-)
Thanks P- LOL- I was thinking the same thing! : )
Your going home tomorrow sounds real good, I will keep the prayers headed your way, I believe you still have a long fight to go. Your whole ordeal has me really thinking about all my encounters with Timber Rattlers over the years and my casual attitude about them. I need to re-evaluate my thinking. I once had a rattler strike at me and his fangs got stuck on the vibram soles on the bottom of my boot.. I wound up killing the snake just jumping around trying to keep my balance. The only Rattler I ever killed, and that was because I stomped him to death as his fangs were stuck to the bottom of my hunting boot. Another time I saw my wife in mid stride stepping over a black phase Rattler, I let her take 3 steps before shouting to freeze, I had her turn around and had her see the 2 1/2 rattler she just stepped over. He never moved but could have had her easily. It makes me wonder how many times I could have been bittin but for the grace of God wasn't. Your ordeal has me rethinking every thing involving rattlers. In the mean time I will keep the prayers headed your way.
Ron- that’s why I have posted about this-never knew there was such a difference with Timber Venom! The good Lord was looking out for you and your wife! Good to see some folks are starting to “get it!”
Hoping for another good platelet count-cautiously optimistic, but if it goes down I won’t be going anywhere. Just have to wait and see.
Dale-Thanks, but I think we have it covered now. Should have known God had it all planned! ;-)
WOW!!! Snake bite 177 post on you and all you had to do was almost die on us. :) Glad your going home.. I'll give you a call this week end.
LOL! I Could have done without becoming a Bowsite “celebrity”! ;-)
Just had another visit from a Bowsiter- horsethief and his wife! : ) You guys are the best!!!
I'll just be happy when he gets his A$$ outta SW Pa:)
You and me both, RC!!!!!!! I’m developing a strange urge to root for the Pirates! I think they are putting something in my IV’s!!!!!! Gotta get out of here before it is too late!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)
Just found out I need to pass one more test at 4am tomorrow. Magic number is anything >53k! All prayers appreciated! ;-)
It was fun visiting Rut. I think he cheered us up more than the other way around. I definitely want him on my side in a fight, once he gets back in form. Great attitude!
One thing tho, pupils are starting to elongate up and down a little bit. No scales yet.
Awesome... Fingers crossed....
^5
Prayer sent..
By the way,, anyone remember a syfy movie where a guy turned into a snake?? :)
Teeton's Link
Found it.. Sssssss
https://snake-facts.weebly.com/sssssss.html
The pizza shop owner up the road knows the guy who hiked in and found and hauled back your camping stuff.
Ed- thanks! You just freaked me out, dude!!!!!!!!!!! : (
Art- thanks again for the visit Just what I needed! I was told it was a nice young couple that actuallly found my stuff. They supposedly left a little message in it for me. I hope I one day get to thank them and everyone involved someday! It was a LOT of good folks!!!!!!!! : )
And thanks to all the Bowsite well wishes! It is getting me thru a tough time!
Hey Rut you havent started saying yinz yet have you with all that western Pa blood your getting?fingers crossed and prayers sent for your release buddy...
The guy's first name is Garrett! Wow.
He'll be sayin' "yinz, n'at" by tomorrow. He's already drinkin' pop. He likes it dun tun. Pretty close to the sus side.
Easy to say, hard to spell.
Dang!!!!!!!! I’m ALREADY talking like that?!
Get me the HELL out of here!!!!!! ;-)
Well at least you're growing some facial hair.
Muphere .. pronounced mup-er.
It’s what Erie, PA locals call visitors from Pittsburgh.
I never understood it until one morning I was fishing Elk creek at the head of cascade falls and had a guy come below me. He was close enough to chat so we started talking and he asked “where you from?” I replied just down the road in Mill creek. He said:
“I’m up here from Pittsburgh”
Classic Muphere. Google it.
Don’t be a muphere RutNut. ;)
Funny story Dale. Think it was Tues morning after my shower I was standing in front of sink shaving. It suddenly hit me................still very low platelet count + razor sharp blade = Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!! ;-)
Jon- LMBO!!!!!!!!! : )
Muphere huntin, muphere fishin, muphere ridin my quad on somebody's private property.
Well little setback folks. Platelets went from 53 to 50! : (
May not be going home. Waiting for Dr to come in. You can’t make this stuff up! ;-)
There are a couple of muper heads. Lmao. Hope the news is good this morning, Perry.
We must have been posting at same time Roy.
Relax Perry. At least they are getting higher. You don't want out of there until everything is right.
Never met you Perry but have said a few prayers for your recovery. That Western Pa blood is good stuff.lol
I'll let Perry tell ya the news:)
Great news! Basically the drs left the decision up to me. Said a 3 point drop was within margin of error, so platelets are probably stabilizing. We discussed my functioning and pain management and decided there probably would not be a difference whether I was here or at home. So I said “cut me loose doc!” : )
Then texted my buddy to FIRE UP THE CHEVY! I’m comin home!!!!!!! ;-)
Good for you!
Safe travels home.
Thanks guys! Got a shower and waiting on PT to bring a walker and clear me on stairs. Wow! One week of bedrest(even walking twice a day) has me VERY deconditioned! Gotta gradually increase the walking at home!
Will- LOL! My grandma on my mom’s side grew up out here! So I got a bit of it circulating!!!!!! ;-) And THANKS for prayers! They were answered!
Good to hear. Still a ways to go bud. Being home will help. Your buddy coming in a chevy to pick you up well...... Ill keep the F150 warmed up if you Need to get home:) I thought Id bring you back to my homestead to see an old friend, meet a Steeler or 2 and catch the Thunderbirds at our air show on your way home. Seeing family will be good eh?
Yep. LOL! Dale!!!!!! Appreciate the offer, but........
I Will have so much more motivation at home! ;-)
Rut Safe travels. Glad to hear your headed home.... and I don’t mean to see the LORD:)
Perry is still waiting on his ride. It's driving him crazy waiting. Of course I didn't mess with him.. Too much:)
After my nose bleeding, I only walked to the bathroom, for a week. My knee joints hurt for two months. Amazing what a week of sitting on your arse can do. In fact I went to the doctors because of the arthritis pain. Walk it off he said...
Be careful brother.
Roy is friggan evil!!!!!! ;-)
Finally! My “limo”!!!! (Black Chevy Silverado)
On the way OUT of Pittsburgh! (Thank God!)
I got a call from my buddy about 20 min after he was to arrive. Said he was at UPMC, but NOT Presbyterian. Only 2 miles away though. At the same time Roy was texting me. I made the mistake of telling him what was happening! I’m sure you can just imagine how he was messing with me! ;-)
Hay RC if Perry and you was hunting 10 miles deep into the high desert and he was bit by a rattle snake. Do you think you could save your buddy from dieing ??
You’ll never see RC 10 miles off any road.
But if it was me and Roy in that scenario I’d trust my life to him.
Of course from what Perry said, without a chopper rescue or a dry bite it sounds like anyone would be dead if that happened.
All I could do would be try, Ed.
Well, I was surprised to see my family bought me a new leather recliner when I got home last night. It is “comfy”
How ya feeling this morning, Perry?
Still lot of pain, but got up to do lap around living room this morning- not breaking any records! ;-)
Trying to wean off the opioids gradually. Still a TON of pain, but getting better.
Going over medical bills. Anybody want to guess what a (single)vial of anti-venom goes for??????
$2,500 per vial. The sad part is that it costs a fraction of that but hospital markups keep the price high so they can "negotiate" reimbursement with insurance companies.
Try $14,000 Phil!!!!!!!
X30 vials = $420,000!!!!!!
JUST for Anti-venom!
How about a helicoptor ride?
$30,000 x 2= $60,000
$480,000 just for “juice” and transportation! ;-)
Perry, it that what they list as their charge or is that what the insurance reimbursed them? The hospital’s list price is often exponentially higher than the insurance companies pay.
That’s their charge. Not sure what the insurance company will pay. I’m sure a lot LESS than 14k!
Just floored me they have the gall to try to price gouge like that!
Did not realize you had 30 vials.
Anti-venin in Mexico is $200 a vial. The Americana pharmaceutical for ya...
Yeah Jon, I didn’t know it until I asked the doctor. I thought 1 dose =1 vial. But he said no- 7 doses of 30 total vials.
I see. Thanks for the explanation. Hope you’re coming around!
Thanks Jon- it’s going to be a long recovery. Did 3(separate) laps around the living room today with the walker. Made 2 trips to the bathroom(1 for a shower) also. Spent the rest of the time in my new leather recliner my family got me. All I had to do was get bit by a rattler! ;-)
I stopped by to check on snakebite. He's propped up in front of the TV in his recliner with pillows all over and the remote... being hand fed pizza. I guess it's a cush job if ya can git it! LOL!
Man, I need to find a snake to bite me......... lol
Wild story Rut. Glad to hear things are working out for you. Best Wishes!
Glad you are home.. Continued Prayers for recovery Have a God Day Harold
LOL! Thanks guys! Not sure if I would do this for the “perks”! ;-)
Hey Rut Glad to hear your during better. Worse case scenario, bring the recliner to the 5C doe hunt and we can hoist it into a tree, or you can use it in a blind. :)). We won’t be hand feeding you Pizza though.
Brian- LMBO!!!!!!!! I don’t doubt it! I’ve seen my fellow 5C committee members go way above and beyond the call of duty over the years! But I have set pretty lofty goals for my recovery! Already doing much better with the walker! I would not be surprised if I am walking without it by next week. Hopefully by 5C y’all won’t even be able to tell I had a gimpy leg! ;-)
BTW, hope your MIL is doing better! Been saying some prayers.
No snake bite. No pillows. No job. No perks.
No snake bite. No pillows. No job. No perks.
Hey Perry. Glad to see you are on the mend.
Hey Rut Thanks for the prayers. My MIL has been moved to hospice care. She has a golf ball size tumor in the right temporal area of the brain. The tumor would be operable except she wouldn’t make it through surgery. It has caused inflammation in the brain. It’s only a matter of days at this point. I will say that the medical staff at UPMC Hamot have been excellent.
Glad to see your home Perry!
Thanks dpms!
Brian- not what I was hoping to hear. But God has a plan. Sometimes it’s hard to accept. I pray for peace and comfort for your whole family at this difficult time!
Thanks Rut. She lived to be 81 years old without having been to a doctor in 48 years. We are all praying that it ends quickly. She is in no pain, which is comforting for the family. The life we have on earth is short, the next life is eternal. Thanks again for the prayers.
Holy Moses man! That is crazy! Hope you are back up and 100% soon!
WOW Brian! No Dr in 48 years???!!!! Crazy!!!!!! You are so right Brian
Ben and Silks- thanks! Just got back from lab work. Felt good to get out of the house for a bit. Little easier each day. But being VERY cautious until we find out latest platelet count.
I just might invite Perry to our Wednesday evening 5C Doe Hunt Italian Feast...if he doesn't have to have his leg elevated onto th table.
LOL! I look forward to that Bob! : )
More good news! Had bloodwork this morning. Platelets went from 53k to 272k in 3 days! God still working! ;-)
I'm a little late but will keep you in prayer. I've came too close a couple times and that was bad enough:)
BSKED, is or was she in the 7th floor. If so, good people. I hope that things go quickly for you guys. The staff is what made that hospital.
Sounds like good news about the platlet count rut. Bet you are thrilled. :)
Hawykeye- prayers still needed, so much appreciated! At Dr’s office today I got weighed- down 20+ lbs since start of ordeal! Just don’t have much appetite yet.
Jon- you cannot imagine! Still blown away by yesterday’s count! I could have sworn toxicologist said a rise like that would take WEEKS, not DAYS!!!!! I will share my PCP’s questionnaire that I filled out yesterday. He and nurse got a big chuckle out of it! ;-)
Boris. She was originally on the 8th floor (neurology), but transitioned to the 7th floor. The people at that hospital are awesome.
Was able to attend my daughter’s swim banquet tonight. Made it thru the entire banquet and awards. Even walked around a bit. THIS is the reason I made it off that mountain!(alive! ;-) And son Garrett, but he was working.
More prayers for you Perry! Glad your home!
Glad you're up and running... well... hobbling... ;^)
Glad you are on the mend Perry and that's what it is all about. Prayers for continued healing. If you are able to make it through anything swim-related in your condition (meets, banquet) you are doing good. Only a swim parent would understand this :) Congrats to your daughter, looks like she did well.
Thanks guys!
Paul- my daughter amazes and inspires me everyday! All Gold and Silver at Championships with several team records and 4 PR’s! Amazing with what she was dealing with all week! Sounds like you have experience? ;-)
I bet I could set a “hobbling” record now Mike! ;-)
been a while since I lurked here, wow!!!!! glad to hear you are ok. Get well, prayers sent.
Joe- how ya been???? Had a little excitement since the last time we spoke! ;-)
Thanks for prayers!!!!!
Yo Rut How you feeling today? Running laps around the house yet?? Hope the recovery is going better than planned. BSKED.
LOL! Not quite! ;-)
But doing laps with the crutch in the Father-in-law’s driveway yesterday.
Looking for a nice cane to transition to now! : )
I'm planning on being there. Looking forward to it!
But I get 5C tags every year because I hunt that SGL near the campground from time to time.
Perry your compound bow or Roys crossbow will make a good crutch.
I might get to use the official DHP Crossgun Dale! ;-)
Good to see you up and about. Your are on your own with the crutches, lol........
Well, not quite on my own yet(wife keeping a sharp eye on me! ;-) But walking under my own power, thank God!
Well in that case.
Crossguns.

Perry, it that what they list as their charge or is that what the insurance reimbursed them? The hospital’s list price is often exponentially higher than the insurance companies pay.
Phil- Insurance paid $219,000 for anti-venom /30 vials = $7300 per vial!
That is nuts! But good for you.
Yes Phil- think my total out of pocket expense so far has been $250- THANK GOD for insurance!!!!! ;-)
That is very good for you.
Got more bills this week. Close to $1,000 out of pocket now. Still better than the alternative!
1k better than 480k I’d say. How’s the leg lookin’ rut? Still on crutches?
I’m patiently awaiting your official story/write up ;)
You’re right Jon!
Leg is LOOKING a lot better, but still have pain and swelling in foot/ankle. Just started to get some dorsiflexion back(pulling foot up towards knee). Walking with cane now, but can walk without it around house now. Still not cleared to start PT or drive- hopefully on Tuesday.
Have to borrow my daughter’s laptop to type up my story- too much to do on phone! ;-). Maybe tomorrow.
