2018 bear hunting

Wow, I was out of service for a day and half and bowsite has blown up. You guys must like hunting or something;)
I hiked about 10 miles of bear woods in the mountains of NH the past couple days. Ended up setting up a tree with a set of sticks overlooking my future bait site where I'll hang from my saddle. It's an area off an old logging road where multiple overgrown skidder trails all intersect, bear and moose sign was hot! It's loaded with blackberries that should be ready to ripen around the bear opener, so I'm hopeful it's an area the bears will want to be even before my bait goes out. I'll prep my second site in the next couple weeks.
Who else is chasing bears next month? Where are you hunting?
Just early Sept for shits and giggles. Pointless without bait but it’s a good excuse to sit in the woods! Wish we could bait here.

Never know, one might stroll on past ya!
I’ll be at it again up at the camp! Hoping for better results than last year. Just went to the fish and game office to file all the paperwork. Can’t wait!
Ditto Spike. I always get a permit and may mess around, but I'm not really "into it" deep. More so during say SG season, as an "accident".
HFSC, your spot sounds amazing. Hope things shake out for you! Looking forward to your reports!
When were you there, Moons? I filed all the paperwork in Concord yesterday afternoon.
I'm pretty pumped about this spot, Will. One of those spots that just gives you the chills because the potential seems so high.
There is also an impressive moose in the area. I'm not real familiar with judging moose tracks, but this is the biggest I've ever seen.
Or you have small hands? ;)
Fake news! My hands aren't small, believe me. People tell me all the time I have big beautiful, moose like hands;)
BAHHHHH Ha HA Ha ha ha! If Notme reads this thread he will lose it!
spike, would placing a shirt upwind for a day or so (that happens to stink like bear food) be considered baiting? or are liquid smells considered bait? Or could you drop your nutritious lunch of jelly donuts on the ground before climbing a tree? Where is the line?
I've often wondered the same thing, PI. One option that could work is to begin baiting now. Everytime you bait spray a heavy dose of anise or vanilla scent, then remove the bait 10 days prior to the season as stated by law. Then when you go hunt use the same spray without the actual bait. The bears might be conditioned to come to your "dinner bell" scent spray.
There you go Hunt-. classic" conditioning " or "operant conditioning" Pavlov./Skinner .
Or, batting occasionally in the area to keep them "guessing" ( happy and fat but still searching in the area) and then a short break (the required 10 days) from baiting, before the season, until introducing an original new smell that brings them in to check it out. Keep it seemingly random until it is not. Then its too late.
Seems that the natural scavaging / foraging is better supplemented in a random way until it is time to hunt , That way they won't be able to associate a human smell or our path /pattern. But I don't know much about the bear's brain. Just instinct talking here.
I think I would chuck bait bags randomly in the previous months and then drop one close by as the time to hunt closes in. Then the fake food smell at the last moment.
Nicotine. Mix bait with nicotine, then withdraw the bait ten days prior, but continue the nicotine. They’ll come for the bait, but stay for the nicotine—you can be sure. And nicotine is a pharmacological attractant—not nutritional. Just let your lawyer know beforehand to be expecting a call from you.
Nicotine and weed/CBD oils? , maybe a sprinkle of crushed opioids for a good healthy addiction.
Joe, I talked to a guy that does exactly that by baiting up to ten days before and using anise on opening day and he bags one every year unfortunately I read the laws good and it said anise was not legal during the season.
Maybe one of those flavored smoke bombs could work. It's not edible, so should be legal right? It might not matter what the scent is, as long as they associate the smell with food.
Hfc, I was up there Friday around lunch. Must’ve just missed you! What are you planning on using for bait this year?
Always carry a loosely wrapped Italian sub in your backpack, they will find you.
Moons, we really must have just missed each other, I was there probably closer to 2. I'm buying a few 55 gallon drums of chocolate free trail mix from a dude in Claremont. I've struggled to keep enough bait at each site the last couple years, so I finally bit the bullet and decided to buy some. How about you, what's the plan?
If you look on the main page I started a fall bear hunting thread. Try to get some tips from some of those Canada boys who bait all the time. I’m gonna buy some of that northwoods bear scents. They recommend the gold rush one. Mix it in with water or oil and spray it everywhere. I have a bunch of corn and dog food too. Plus I talked with the lady from Dunkins in town gonna start stacking up all the old donuts. My buddy from central mass baits up by the lake. He goes to the hostess factory and gets old twinkies. Says you gotta tell them you’re a pig farmer because they don’t want you to kill bears lol. Hopefully they will come!!! I’m excited
Joe just a question, how are you going to get a 55 gallon drum of trail mix into the woods? That’s gotta weigh 5-600 pounds!
Moons, I'll definitely check out that thread. Those Canadian boys can also hunt em' in the spring, so I'm sure they know their stuff. I went the trail mix route this to try to compete better with natural mast crops, which were out of control last year. We could be in for a great season with how few bears we're killed last year.
Brad, I'm going to keep the barrels at my camp and bring the bait out in installments as needed.
Not sure how a bear wouldn’t come to this bait site!! Fingers crossed
Moons is that a bait tub for NH? Good luck!
Yes Will set it up this morning. Thanks!
Who's heading out Tuesday? Morning and evening sits with the bow along a swamp edge where a bear passes by at least once per week. The blackberries seem to be hanging around longer than usual so I will walk some clear-cuts at midday with the savage 99. Tekoa
I’m excited for this season just stopped by the landowner of a cornfield I hunted last year and he said I’m good to go again. I went to the end of the cornfield and it was hammered down everywhere way more then last year. I head back to the truck and half way catch some movement and see a small bear running away. I now want Tuesday off! If you look good you can see the trampled corn.
Spike, Small bears usually taste better and are a heck of a lot easier to deal with when down. I would take a 130-150 pounder any day over a stinky fat 300+ pounder. I do enjoy eating the meat but what I really want is the fat. I render it down for cooking oil and baking. Tastes great and is way better for you than processed seed oils. The fat on a small bear still provides enough for what I use for a year. Tekoa
Tekoa this bear may have been like a 50 pound cub hard to tell. Odd I did not see mom around if it was. The landowner showed me a pic of a nice bear in there but I am with you all I want is a 125-175 pounder. He also showed me a pic of a rattlesnake and said their were a bunch around so maybe I will see my first one of those. So far the plan is to hunt morning go to work and return at 3.
looking like high 80's- 90's not good for daytime movement
Maybe early morning could workout to our advantage
Great first morning. Saw a sow with cubs at 8:15, a deer, and a porcupine. I thought the heat would kill the morning but it was very productive.
Everyone, good luck ! Spike , I know that hill, great spot. You hear any shots this AM ?
That’s awesome spike sounds like you’re in the right spot
Saw one while still hunting late morning. It was about 150 yards and moving steadily from left to right in front of me. I could only catch glimpses of it as it moved through the trees and could never get a good bead on it. I was using my peep sighted model 94 lever action. The bear dropped into a depression and out of sight so I crouched/scrambled to about 80 yards. We both popped into each others view at the same time and his reflexes were faster than mine. Guessing 150-175 pounds. No other shots heard. Fun start to the season. Tekoa
Cool to see you guys are into them! Spike, that field looks like it's been beat down pretty badly, bet the farmer was happy to see you and is hoping you take one.
Belchertown Bowman's Link
This was 10 yards of my clover plot.
There are bears everywhere! Get'em BB
Tekoa
naw,.. gotta save whatever meager vacation time I get for the deer and turkey!
BB - S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y
Just sayin :)
Unless you are a lazy bear hunter like me, and would go for the heck of it, or maybe shoot one for bycatch so to speak during deer season - ha ha ha :)
That said, slow cooker sweet and sour bear is, to this day, probably 25-30 years later, the best tasting wild game I've ever had.
Sounds like a great opening morning guys! I really wish I had time to drive out to the western part of the state to hunt some bears, but not nearly enough time.
Nice looking bait site, Moons! I gotta say I was a little jealous when I saw all your barrels loaded up on your atv. I got 2 baits all squared away in NH on Saturday. Hiked bait a mile in at both sites, from 5:45am - 4:30pm. Pretty grueling day, but I think they are the two best baits I've ever set, I'm hoping to find them pounded when I go up to re-bait on Thursday.
My baits are getting cleaned every day. Saw a medium bear opening day. Didn't want to end the season on the first day.Should be a good year.Good luck boys
Nice good luck guys. PV, what zone are you in?
I went up to re-bait today and check cams. This is what both baits looked like when I left them on Saturday.
And this is what they both looked like when I arrived today. Both were smashed! In retrospect, a cheap plastic trash barrel may not have been the best option. A few real nice bears on cam, I'll throw up some pics later.
Joe that’s better then what my Maine guide used. He hung a trash bag from a tree. Didn’t see a bear the whole week.
So my plan to sew donuts into the outside of my hunting suit is a bad one? Is that illegal by the way? It is not bait,..
It reminds me of the guy who posted/suggested packing a grinder in your pack,.. LOL
Looks good joe go get em. My shit hasn’t been touched lol this whole bear baiting thing is driving me nuts!! Is it deer season yet??
Moons are the acorns dropping? Do you have a swamp nearby?
Yes tons of oaks and yes swamp very close. I went in and checked Monday, nothing. Driving back down the trail and a friggen bear runs across the trail right in front of me, 300ish yards from the bait. My old man went back in today with intentions of re baiting because there is no way that bear didn’t hit the bait, right???? Well, everything is still there. Lol can’t figure it out
You guys got me jealous with those bait sites. Joe, I’d be one happy camper with the bait getting hit like that. BB, just watched your video and saw the bear stand up and run then the wind blowing at him. Wonder what he ran from?
Moons, two things come to mind either they are hitting acorns or your bait is in the wrong wind direction from where they are at. I’d move that bait ASAP and play the wind with it around where you saw the bear so that it carries to the fresh sign. When I’m in the Berkshires I usually always find berries around the swamps with all the bear crap. Plus they seem to follow along the swamps and with the water in this heat win win.
Here is a spot I baited pre season. 30 yards to the left was the swamp this woods was 150ish yards wide between the swamp and landowners house/road. This trail had berries along it plus the landowner has appletrees. The perfect set up but didn’t see a single bear! Every bear around was traveling through.
I want to move the bait but you can’t you have to file an app with fish and game with the exact location of the bait site. I know there are bears around and they could come from literally anywhere there is 10’s of thousands of acres around. I’ve seen bears on that hill in every direction from the bait site. Bear dog hunters have been on the hill a few times. Training the dogs I think? Dog season doesn’t start for a while.. Maybe they pushed a lot of them off the hill?? I don’t know what’s up but it will drive you nuts!! Haha one more week till deer up there
Brad, I remember we spoke about that a while back. That guide should be ashamed of himself, especially in such a great bear state like Maine.
Moons, you might try contacting your local conservation officer, I bet there is a good chance he'd let you move it if it's not getting hit. I've spoken with the guy in my zone, e2, a few times. He's super down to earth and really willing to help guys out. Baits bears every year himself. Also, did your season get extended this year? My zone is open all the way to October 5th.
Went to my spot after work sat down in my stool and within 15-20 minutes I look up a see a bear coming down the hill on the trail I saw the sow and cub on. I had about 30 seconds to judge this bear and at first glance I thought it was the cub that was with the sow so I held off and now at 30 yards broadside for the life of me I couldn’t tell if this bear was a cub or just a small bear good enough to be my first being 100-120 pounds. The bear then walked off into the cornfield and I kept watch to see if mom was behind. Nope no mom a loner bear ugh did I just let my first bear go? I’m feeling sick now as I’ve been at it for years with zero sightings until this year where I’ve been 3 for 3 on this property. Judging bear size has been far more difficult then I thought. No bait means quick come and go sightings.
I would say this bear was the size of the two in the above pics I posted. What would be your minimum first bear size in MA?
Sounds like you've got a killer spot in that cornfield! It also sounds like you made the right call. I bet you'd be kicking yourself even more if you shot a cub or even worse, the sow before you saw the cubs. Hope ya get one soon man.
After looking at a lot of pics it looks like I passed on a small sow and not a cub. Tomorrow morning hopefully I will have some pics. For my first bear I think I’d be happy.
Spike, Safe call right call. You've hunted well Karma means the big boar will be coming in. Tekoa
Jdr, unfortunately where I’m set up it’s hilly so it’s hard to know if it is a lone bear as I have very little time to take the shot. Joe, I hunted this spot last year and the sign was minimal but decided to check it out again this year and wow way different. It rained this morning and on way to my spot I saw fresh tracks in the mud and crap on the trail. It is about 200 acres of corn and the corner I chose is almost the only tore up spot in the whole place. I’m talking 50 yards of trampled corn and I’m able to cover most of it looking at where they are coming from. Tekoa, if I could have any bear it would weigh 150-175.
Finally got some action at the bait site!
Nice dude! Glad you've got some action.
I placed this cam about as well as Helen Keller after a few glasses of whiskey, so even though the bait was hit for days it only caught a few pics. Looks like this one has a good sized noggin on him!
This bait has the most action on it. The bear in the pic seems to have claimed this bait as his and basically hasn't left since he showed up on the 2nd. I missed him by about 30 minutes when I rebaited on Thursday. Even though I cut nice holes in the barrel for them to eat out of they just seem to destroy everything almost immediately.
Well today I catch movement to my right and look to see two bears running down the hill. Looks like the mom and cub I saw on day 1. They are just 15 yards away and eye to eye with me in my stool. She just stares then ambles to the corn like no big deal. I’ve never had this much action hunting in my life! Moons the bear in your pic looks like the size of the one I saw yesterday so now I’m really hating myself. Here’s a pic of some corn damage. Every time I go it gets more destroyed.
I decided to see what the other side of the corn looked like and holy crap same damage and runs. I walk further and hear something crash through the corn not sure if deer or bear. I pick a nice run and go in the woods ten feet in I see this.
Now I know where the big boy is. Ten more feet and another pile like that! Now decide if I try there or stay where I’m at. Going back in for 2:30 to see if last nights bear comes back. When are you guys going out to NH?
Whose out on this great day?
About to drive to my spot soon. That looks like some nice cover you got there. I can’t even bother with the stand ten feet up and the leaves block everything.
You hunting over the plot? Good luck one of us on here has to put one down.
Ya i put up a ghilli behind me when i can to make a permanent blob in the tree. So then when show up nothing changes. Any of my movements are not silloetted by skyline. Plus anything behind me cannot see my head turning or some movment of mine if they snuck up on me. I have no clue if it will actually help! Lol.
Hey don’t jinx me! Here now the plan is sit my honey hole till 4:30 then go to other spot I found today at other side of corn. If I see the bear from last night I offer no apologies it will be my first seems big enough maybe lol.
Man, you are onto some hot spots out there. I hope to see a pic of you with a bear tonight! Good luck to you also, BB!
I won't be back in NH until next week to rebait, then hopefully in a tree Thursday and/or Friday depending on work and wind direction.
Guys this all great stuff! Spike, judging bears is so so hard to do! Good luck everyone! Joe you have some beautys showing up!
Spike, never apologize for any harvest, just remember some are easy dragging !
Good luck Spike!!! Pulling for you man!!!
Walked to spot number 2 and holy crap this was not here when I was here earlier steaming fresh. No sightings in spot 1. I notice I see more on sunny days.
I have a major problem, I can't stop checking this thread. Go shoot one Brad!
Spike that might have been me,... my bad.
Well at least the bear did a #2 at spot 2!
Well this great I’ve been here alone for a week and the landowner said no one else has hunted yet. I just heard a shot probably 2-300 yards away towards my truck.
Just someone target shooting. Can’t believe I have the place all to myself even after one of the guys shot his first bear on his first day ever hunting last year. Not to mention he built one hell of a palace up in a tree. No bears tonight and doubt I will get out until next Saturday damn job.
Bummer! Exciting spot though. GL next weekend!
dam spikeyour in them.....to bad about having to work!!!
A couple of buddies shot bears over the weekend. both high 100s. Both with the bow. Berkshire County.
Buddy’s girlfriend got herself a big NH bear!
Moons.. that's a beauty she shot! Congrats to her! whacked it with the Remington! lol..
Awesome! Congrats to both!!
Wow great bear!
Just got back from rebaiting. Ran into a guy who said he and a few of his buddies saw over 12 bears from their stands last night. My baits were totally cleaned out again. I've got two sd cards burning a hole in my pocket, but can't check them until late tonight after work.
HFC keep us posted want to see some better pics Hellen!! When are u hunting it?
Bahahahahaha! Unfortunately I think one cam will still look like Stevie Wonder and Hellen teamed up to hang it. The other should have some good stuff on it. I'll be hunting Thursday and Friday this week.
Cool I’ll be up Thursday Night, Friday, Saturday. Let me know if u get one I’ll load up the 4wheeler and help u get him out. Forget about that dragging stuff! Beers on u after!
Thanks for the offer! I think, unfortunately, that wouldn't be legal. Both my baits are in the White Mountain National Forest, motorized vehicles off of paved roads are a no go.
Joe, are you going to quarter it?
If I kill one that's the plan. Especially one spot is just a gnarled mess of blackberry bushes, even with a couple guys it would be a tall task getting a bear out.
Hope to get an encounter with this one. Hard to identify bears on the other cam as I hung it very poorly, but that bait has much more nocturnal activity. This bait is in some thick nasty stuff and has bears at it all day.
I think this is the same bear, but not quite sure. It sure looks thick.
nice bear! Another buddy shot a small one last night. hundred pounder. His first w/ the bow
Congratulations everyone, keep it going !
I was blessed to take this beautiful bear this evening. 3 years of hard work finally paid off.
Congratulations, that's awesome
HFK, you are the MAN!! Congrats- great bear!!!!! Please tell the whole story!
Strong work bud!! Congrats. Tell us more
Hunt, congratulations, well deserved !
Joe I am so happy for you ! Congratulations on your beautiful bear!
YEAH! Way to go HFSC! Totally stoked for you man! Super excited for the full tale of your hunt! Congrats!
Congrats!!!! Nice work. Let's see some more pics!
Hey thanks guys! It got nice and cool last night, so I put the quarters into antimicrobial game bags and hung in a tree for the night. Just got done packing it out. Waiting to check it with a conservation officer. I'll type up some more this evening when I'm at my comp.
Joe that’s awesome congrats. Hard work pays off!!!
Congrats Joe, hell of a bear!
Alright guys, thanks again. Finally home and have the meat squared away to the point where I can sit down.
I got into the tree around 12:30 yesterday afternoon, by the way this was also my first hunt in the saddle. This particular bait was the one I had mentioned earlier in the thread, that was directly at the intersection of some old skidder trails and had become overgrown by thick nasty black berry bushes. It had activity at all times throughout daylight hours, leading me to believe multiple bears could be bedding with in sight or smell of the bait. I got into the tree very quietly, approaching in a way that would blow my scent away from the area I though most likely for a bear to look after the bait.
When I was finally situated I noticed a bear had drug the barrel off and out of sight. There was still some bait on the ground, but appeared it had been soaked from the previous nights rain. My confidence dropped at that point, but I kept trying to remember there were bears here every single day, in day light hours, since September 2nd. Five and half hours later, I had seen nothing but squirrels, chipmunks and birds. Finally, at 6pm, I heard a blue jay let out it's alert call directly down wind of me. I heard some faint rustling of leaves and branches snapping slowly circling my perimeter for the next 30 minutes or so. At about 6:45, as closing time was approaching, he finally committed and sauntered toward the bait. The wind was not good, it had shifted directly towards the bait. When he was about 18 yards from me he turned toward me, slightly quartering to, and definitely smelling my wind at this point, but it was too late. My pin had settled tight to his left shoulder on account of the slight quartering to angle and I let the arrow fly. The arrow hit probably an inch or two more forward than I wanted, but the 564 grain arrow broke through his left shoulder blade, got both lungs and buried in the ground behind the bear. He stumbled 20 yards and died within sight.
I had it skinned, quartered and hung in game bags by 10:30. With temps dropping into the upper 40's I saw no reason to break my back lugging meat out in the dark. I packed it out this morning as the sun was coming up over the mountains. If that ain't living the dream I'm not sure what is!
I estimated the bear to be between 125-150#, although when I first saw him walk underneath me I thought for sure he was well in excess of 200#. They will definitely fool you. The conservation officer thought 125-150 was a reasonable estimate based on the size of his head. He took a tooth to be sent to a state lab, they then publish the ages of all the bears killed when the annual harvest report is released.
Awesome story and no doubt they are the hardest animals to judge. That is one hardcore story you got right there lugging out the next day!
That’s awesome. When I got my bear a couple years ago I thought the thing was huge! Turned out to be 125 pounds lol. They are deceiving. How was the officer? Did he have you take him to the kill site?
Amazing story HFSC. Very cool! Enjoy some rest, and go get a deer so you can have a "multi-meat-meal" :)
The officer was great, Moons. I've spoken to him multiple times and has always been very helpful. He didn't have me take him to the sight. I met him at his home, he checked everything over, he even bought my left over bait from me for his bait site! Really good guy.
Will, I'm itching to get after deer now, but I'll welcome a few weeks of just going to work.
Congratulations HFSC !! Beautiful bear !!
Hfsc super cool story. Thanks for sharing!
I have a damn wedding this afternoon so I couldn’t hunt this morning. Figured I’d check the cam before I leave. Of course new big bear showed up last night and was there this morning!!! Plus a cool shot of an owl protecting my bait from the chipmunks
Get back in there! Does the season in your zone end on the 28th?
21 I’ll be back for an all day sit on Friday. Short season sucks!! My old man is gonna try all week but might need the young gun to show him how it’s done on the last day lol
I hope you can get after him!
Sucks Moons hopefully Friday is good for you. I find bears to be different then deer in regards to movement times. I feel just as confident at 12 noon as I do before dark. I’ve gotten many pics over the years between 10 and 2.
My dad went in this am jumped the bear off bait. You guys think he’ll come back? This was in pitch black
Absolutely, they are slobs.
My first sit the mom and cub ran off and came back the next day.
From what I understand older bears won't tolerate being bumped off a bait. They'll go nocturnal real quick. Youngins' you'll probably be fine.
Got this guy Saturday 266# Dressed Had to wait for the young guys to be in camp before hunting this bait. 1.5 mile pack out
Congrats! Beauty. Love the black nose. Mounting it?
Congrats on your bear Huntskifishcook and putting in the work. Your first? Just tanning the hide Moons, I've a much larger one rugged
let's see if I can get this pic upright
Wow nice one PV congrats! You guys are hardcore going that far to bait.
How much does he weigh!? On my neighbors bait in Sutton NH
moons.. that's a slob... well over 300 dressed i'd say.
He better have help with that sucker!
I admire you guys that are hunting and killing them. I've had enough of it.
I am actually going to sneak out today and try to whack one of the big bears on my cams. I am bringing the bow and smoke pole... just in case. Probably my only time out for the bear season. I wasn't even going to hunt, but it is going to be a nice night and I have no other obligations for once and I don't have to waste my "free time" until deer season... lol. I have one big boar on cam. Another very large sow too, but she has little ones.
Good luck Ungie just sitting and seeing deer is worth going out to relax.
I want to get out for deer in CT. I put a call in to a friend who knows the landowner who used to let us hunt. Her son in law now hunts so we lost it... that was a few years ago. hoping to get back in.. we'll see.
Had a sow and 3 small cubs come by last night. I'll try to upload some pics.. it was a great encounter.
Very cool Ungie love seeing bears.
Cool ungie!
That’s a wrap on the baiting season in my zone in nh. Didn’t get one, but I’d call it a success. Last year was the first year I did a site. No bears came. This year I had 4 different bears just couldn’t kill one!! I tell ya this stuff is so much fun! If you haven’t tried it you got to
Seems like everyone is just about wrapped up with bear hunting. I cleaned up all my gear in NH today and just got done checking the cam I had left, a few cool pics on it. This raccoon looks like he is just realizing he made a poor decision.
very cool pic! I only went once. I will shoot one if I see one during 2nd season.
