Checking out a new spot, and realizing that only the best spot you have will be close in terms of potential for seeing deer and interacting with them. Man, I'm pumped. Set a cam, and will let it sit for a few weeks, but overall... I walked out realizing that it's one of those "see deer almost every sit" sort of areas, at least it looks that way.
I suspect it gets solid pressure, so that's the one glitch. But for now, I'm going to enjoy the after glow from a great boots on the ground experience.
Put the cam on a point coming off a ridge at the end of a ledge. Already feeding on acorns some on top, and the point slopes into a nice hemlock swamp. Textbook...
Hope you all find a cool new spot this year like this!
Hope it works out for you, and that you never see another person while hunting there...
X2 but unfortunately every time I get excited their is a stand or camera up right there but you never know.
My gut says that it will be me and my closest 30 friends... I'm lucky that I tend to be able to hunt week days, so that should help. But its public, so my excitement is tempered. The exact spot is a we shall see. My gut says dudes that hunt it will follow trails deep, and that by November, the clearly high deer numbers will be hugging houses and roads since access is limited...
Yeah, sounds pretty terrible. I'd hate to see you waste your time. Maybe you should just give me the location and I'll check it for you and let you know if it's worth trying. You're a good guy Will, I'd be happy to make that sacrifice for you...
Sounds like a good one man! I scouted a spot a couple weeks ago that made me feel similarly. It's a creek crossing that is between 3 different beddingg areas. Trails from all bedding areas meet at the crossing. It's about 2 miles from the main parking area, but about 1/2 mile from a lesser known parking area. It'll have far less pressure than the main wood lot, but I'm sure I'm not the only guy who knows about this spot.
Bruce, this time, I'd like to test it out to make sure the merchandise is good, ha ha ha!
That said, if you are still looking for new areas after losing a great one last year, I have several new areas I'd discuss with you... but this one is private, like the bathroom with the Sunday paper :)!!! Ha ha ha!
Will I have plenty of vacation time to come sit with you. I also have a vid camera!
Longbeard, Please PM your CV or resume along with several work samples and references for review :) ha ha ha! I kill me.
In all seriousness though, you guys should be hitting up Moons :)
excellent Will. Happiness is... that first temp drop on a mid-October morning when you can see your breath, the smell of fallen leaves and you are finally sitting that ace spot you have been keeping in your back pocket for the right day. Ahhhhh..... is it here yet !
Will, thanks for the offer but I should be OK. I do appreciate you hooking me up with a couple of spots after I lost that spot last year. Only got out there once but I did see a couple deer. Unfortunately I wasn't quite set up yet and they saw me at pretty much the same time that I was spotting them. I might get me one of those saddle thingy's and walk a couple of spots we talked about last year.
Anyway, I hope this new spot is just as busy as your gut says, but with only deer and no people.
Just put another cam up over lunch, this one at my "A" spot the past few years. It's still champion. There were a few white oak acorns starting to fall, and be mowed down... But also just a LOT of sign. So that spot yesterday is in the B+ or A- category. I do think it's the second best spot I've got in MA. Even with minimal knowledge of it, there clearly are a lot of deer, and, it's got lots of topography that should cause those deer to travel certain ways - sure looked that way. That's a glitch in my A spot... It's small overall, but it's not super good at forcing movement outside one area two close to houses to mess with. So, while there are spots there that I know I could see a deer 80 or 90% of my sits (crazy, I know)... It's also probably that of those hunts which came with sightings, I'd only get a shot op rarely. 75 yds there today... 60 the other way tomorrow. Last year, after about 5 or 6 years, I finally felt like I had really narrowed down a few areas - both of which primarily work as planned from late October to Thanksgiving...
Will, I pray your camera picks off a deer and not a hunter hanging a stand :)
