How Long Is a Stand Good For

Ok my metalurgist friends... I can see on a fixed position stand that the strap is wearing or the cables are getting rusty or what not... and that helps me decide if I should retire or fix or just keep using a fixed position stand...
But how do you determine when your climber is toast?
Every couple years I replace the cables on my summit. They sell a shrink tubing kit, and I'm sure it's great... But my "fear of hitting the ground" forces me to buy new ones to be sure they are "good". Every time I do this, I find myself pondering the life span of aluminum... I mean, I take good care of my stand, but it's got to be close to 15 years old. Besides just giving the stand a good once over to see if it's got any little cracks, is there any other thing to do to make sure it's solid?
I say buy one every 3-4 months..think of it, you get a new stand..the stand manufactures stay in business..and you can donate the "old " stand to HTCAS( hunters that can't afford a stand) win win
My primary stand is an API Grand Slam 2500. I think I've owned it for more than 20 years and have used it on hundreds of trees. I just checked it out this past weekend and it's good to go. I'm sure it'll wear out someday... but it hasn't, yet.
Good question. I bet close to 50 years for the actual metal frame. Cables, depends, maybe every 5 years? Straps, probably every 2 years if left outside.
I own stands that are 25 years old. On some I had to replace cables but platforms, risers and seats are good (except the Lock On cloth seats). I replaced ratchet straps with chains on all of my fixed stands. Last dozen years Ive been mostly hunting Chippewas. Have a bunch of fixed behind the shed that never get hung.
Good to hear all these thoughts. My fixed stands come in prior to gun season - if I use them at all on a given year...
The climber, I replace cables, perhaps more than needed, but the peace of mind is good. You all have me less concerned about the frame on the climber now for sure! Thanks.
I sell all stands after a few years. Lone wolf and XOP. Still get back 75-80% of my $ back
Will there are over 2,000 DC3s flying and the last one was built in 1950. Most were built prior to 1942. Don't worry about your stand. Aluminum is tough stuff.
Tekoa
That's a great point Tekoa!

Aluminum should last for over 100 years under the load and use it is designed for.
