Well fellas, the time is here, and the sun has risen on another deer season in Kansas. I can't wait to see the pictures of everyone's success. I'm sure this season's meat pole will be a dandy, no doubt! I pray that the good Lord blesses us all with a successful, memorable, and safe hunting season.

Haven't hunted opening day for several years due to the warm temp.s

Hunted this morning - 68 degrees, humid, not a stitch of breeze. Just wanted to get into the stand, get into my routine. Did pretty good - only forgot one thing.

Saw one doe - opted not to shoot - too warm to be dressing a deer for me.

Looking forward to cooler temp.s!

Good luck all.

Good luck to all. I also can’t wait to see everyone’s success. I feel blessed every time I step into the hunting woods. I wont be out till October in Kansas. Enjoy guys.

17-Sep-18
I'm a student at K-State and had classes today, so I didn't get the chance to hunt. It sure was hot walking around campus though. Fortunately, I'll be in the tree all weekend. My freezers empty too, so if a doe walks out in front of me, she'd better duck. ;)

Significant cooldown coming for most of the state in the next few days. Several days of lows in the 40s, highs in the 60s coming up. Should get the deer moving, and the hunters outside.

I'm hoping to have the last two food plots in before the rain starts. It would have been nice to plant the last few days in low 70s! I guess dehydration and heat exhaustion make one appreciate fall -- I'm exaggerating... kind of. :)

It was miserable opening day with the heat, humidity and bugs. I was attacked on the walk back by mosquitoes and plucked over 50 seed ticks and oak mites off when I got home

That sounds horrible my friend!

Will this be the "Bait free" meat pole, or should I start that for the folks who actually hunt?

Slate, A couple of question for you, and you don't have to answer. Do "you" "sit" over a bait pile and call it "hunting"? Do "you" happen to use a x-gun bolt shooter during archery season? Would "you" proudly display a kill of a deer shot over a bait pile, with any weapon? If your answer is yes to any of these then your disqualified as being called an archery "HUNTER". As far as Sito goes, he has done more for kids and promoting archery, and other outdoor en devours, and the Kansas Bow hunters Association, and Kansas bow hunting then I can even imagine you doing. If you would, then good for you. I'm sure that someone who is disabled, and can't hunt as a normal person could but still loves the outdoors and wants to kill a deer over a bait pile because of his/her disabilities, I'm pretty sure even Sito would not disapprove of that type of, situational "hunting". You don't know me and I don't know you, But, I do know Sito. I don't demand any kind of audience when I speak. But I do hate to see someone of good heart and character get verbally abused. Why do you think the Kansas Department Of Tourism shut off baiting on public hunt lands? Anyway, stop with the BS please!

PM me if you want. The baiting debate and the use of cros gun bolt shooters during archery season has been cussed and discussed to death on this site. No winners, only loosers, (the Kansas archery hunters are the looser's) This bowsite thread is called "meat pole 2018-2019". That is appropriate right up until it shows or someone tells of the great "hunt" over a friggin pile of corn, or with a cross gun bolt shooter during archery season. Someone showing off a great buck taken over bait pile makes me want to puke, don't interest me at all personally.

From: Slate
20-Sep-18
I consider myself a hunter. I have used a compound bow, rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader and yes a crossbow. Baiting doesn’t interest me either. I have tried it but I won’t judge someone who chooses to hunt that way. I promote the sport of hunting and not just the way I do it.

Sure haven't Slate, weeds are over my head and way to many bugs. The deer are in the milo so my area doesn't pick up till after harvest. I would rather wait till the time is right than take the chance of screwing things up for later.

I haven't been on here for a few days, but I have a question for Chief. If you hunt over bait do you consider them to not have a good heart or good character? I would guess a lot of people that do that are good people!!

From: Bodyman
24-Sep-18
Watch out Lee they will rain down on ya

From: chief
24-Sep-18
leebo1963, I have NO vitriolic feelings against anyone as a human being, not until they do something harmful or illegal to me or my family, that is a whole other circumstance. I'm sure the majority of hunters would stop and render assistance, or pull someone from a burning car/house, help an old lady across the street. My point I am trying to make is to get bow hunters, and rifle hunters ( I have NO interest in shooting a deer with a rifle either, no thrill in that, for me either) to experience the true thrill and Adrenalin rush of taking a deer without merely setting over a pile of bait and shooting a deer when they come to feed. Where in the world is the sporting chance you should give your opponent in that? It just burns my ass to see people who take a deer like that, AND then proudly claim themselves to be hunters. It's not even in the same category. All that does is show that you hit the animal and made a good shot. The deer deserve a sporting chance to outwit you. I realize that some people will bait and there is nothing I say or do that will change their mind, I just wish it would. I think those that bait are missing out on the true thrill of the kill. To each his own. I'm not sure if P & Y or B & C even recognize bait attracted deer kills for the books. Probably do! But I think that is in the winds of change. Would be almost impossible to determine. I do not hunt anymore for several reasons, lack of public lands that are not overrun with out of state hunters, lack of private lands that are not leased or owned by out of state hunters, and most of all lack of physical health to do it as I once did. I got a few memories. Just trying to get people to realize there is the easy way and the thrilling right way. I'm out, and will not post on any more right way, wrong way, but will wish happy hunting to all and look forward to seeing some pics of some big bucks taken by those I know are doing it the thrilling way.

From: Leebo1963
25-Sep-18
Not much of a sporting chance sitting on a crop field with a 300 mag and shooting a deer at 500 yards!! So that is wrong I guess, because that is legal!!!

How is hunting that expensive. I hunt pretty much every day in my home state when i am home and it cost me around 50 for a tag and than I buy a few scent products and I hunt out my back door so no gas money. I also come to the great state of Kansas and hunt for about 20 days and my total cost is about 2300. If I only stay 15 days it is about 1800-2000. Shawn

Ok so what a week. Got here on the 30th because I wanted to hunt Halloween always have had some great Halloween hunts through the years. When I got here I checked my first camera and right away saw the buck I would love to shoot. The pictures where October 25th so I knew he was around. The first few days where slow. I was doing all day sits being the weather was gorgeous and I was getting consistent winds. After checking my second camera I also saw my buck on the opposite side of property and I was confident that this ?was home for him and I just needed to hunt smart. It really didn’t pick up until afternoon of the 5th. I saw a couple up and coming beauty’s and I passed up a really nice buck that evening. So the morning of the 6th I had an east wind which gave me 2 stand options both on opposite sides of property and both where I had trail cam pictures of my buck. I hunted the west side of the property in the morning not seeing much so I then moved to the east side of property Got to the stand 1130 ish and I was excited because it was a fresh stand, one of my best stands and I could finally check my 3rd camera. So I got up in stand early put a nice big skoal dip in my mouth and started to check the 3100 pictures I had on camera. Got through like a hundred pictures and just as I scrolled on to my buck which I was happy to see on camera again I hear a light grunt which sounded like a young buck. I said screw it I will talk back and hit him with a deep mature grunt. Well I was met with a mature grunt/roar. I had woken the beast. Out of the thick came My buck but I only got a quick look and all went silent. I let out one more grunt but nothing. I didn’t want to push it so I waited. Then finally emerged a doe and yup he was not far behind her. That is when they came out to the edge of the field and bedded 34 yards away. When he came out into the field he let one of the loudest buck roars out I had ever heard . Gave me chills it was awesome. As they bedded a spike emerged and I knew he had to be the young grunt I originally heard. It was about a 45 minute waiting game until his girl got up. He followed I ranged him 30 yards stopped him and shot. He ran 70 yards and it was over RAGE IN THE CAGE BABY What an amazing adrenaline high. GOD I LOVE THIS STUFF

Thanks for reading guys and thanks for all the congrats

Thats the buck I passed the night before

One of 6 different bucks I saw on the evening of Friday, November 9th. 125 gr Magnus stinger did the trick, he only went 70 yards before tipping over. Does Magnus have a saying? ...... Stinger right in the dinger maybe?

That deer has a high body. Congratulations to all of you who have gotten it done. I'm on a plane pulling away from the gate at the Houston airport. I have been gone for 30 days working on a drillship. Thanks for the pictures and all the post they have kept me from going crazy not being able to hunt. I will be in a stand in the morning. Maybe get a little semi hunt going for everyone.

Great hunt Saturday afternoon. Decoyed this guy in and had an 8yard shot from the ground. After sitting out last season with a broken ankle it felt good to be back at it. I’ve taken a lot bigger deer in the past but this animal gave me an encounter and hunt I’ll never forget. Good luck, hunt whenever you can and tag a deer that makes you happy.

Yep, I agree with Dave. 12 degrees out when I took this one Tuesday morning. Everything was frozen solid so I could drive right to him to load. That, a full freezer, and that bacon wrapped tenderloin I just finished and I'm happy.

Just stick it in a Crock-Pot on high overnight. Add whatever seasonings you like. Slice and put on sandwiches with Mayo and dill pickles.

Harvested this mainframe 8 yesterday morning (11/18/18) at 9:30 am. Went in expecting to shoot a doe as we do not have any cameras out on this property, but luckily had this guy come by at 15 yards. Hit both lungs and the heart and went 20 yards. Every buck I saw the last couple of days were still cruising with their head down or chasing does. It is a great time to be out!

Vacation winding down...thankful for a chance at a good buck.

This guy was tending a doe. They were bedded 50 yards upwind. I had to get out of the stand in an hour to go home and do some chores. So I decided to try something crazy. I got the doe's attention waving my hand. The buck was in some thicker stuff bedded and didn't see me. She got alert and came over to see what I was. Of course, the buck followed and the rest, as they say, is history. I shot him through both lungs, but he was totally fixated on keeping his eye on the doe. He ran 10 yards, stopped, then looked at the doe...5 seconds later...he was down. 20 steps from my tree. I just couldn't resist shooting this buck given the cool circumstances and the dwindling time for my vacation. I saw much bigger deer out searching today, just before I shot this one. Now is the time to be in the woods.

I had this bruiser come in at last light limping onto the field to check out my decoy. I was pinned down with does for the last hour but slipped an arrow up in this guy and he crashed 4 steps off the field. Two weeks ago I couldn't pull back my bow because a neck injury pinched the nerve that went down my arm. It's still messed up but God heard my prayers and let me pull back on this brute.

Decided to throw some smoke at them today..... snuck into new part of this property at 9am. Had to wait a bit as four bucks were chasing a doe as I was walking in. Found a spot, sat on the ground, shot this guy at 9:50. Didn’t realize at the time he had broke off half his rack, but he was an old warrior, proud to get the opportunity.

Nice bucks guys, congrats!

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any posts from Slate since late October? I guess I was following the bait free meat pole and then realized I better check the regular meat pole. I guess I'm late to the party, my bad.

I have one question.... Slate you sit over bait piles and that's the outcome of your hunt? I'm certain you had bigger deer on your trail cams over bait piles why did you shoot an average buck 125" so early? With the amount of posts and banter all fall from you I expected more I guess? Congrats though! All that matters is what makes you happy. I look forward to the next 10 months of multiple daily posts from ya.
