jax - when I went to New Mexico the first time I was in better shape than the guide. One day we hiked about 2 miles to the top of one ridge and saw elk on the opposite ridge and all he wanted to do was sit and glass them. I told him I was headed over there and he finally showed up about an hour later. That was 7 seven years ago but I can still hike all day.

I thought new Mexico was easy.....for some reason Montana and Idaho was tough on the lungs more than new Mexico for me

Idaho has much more vertical terrain than new mexico. Steep country in Idaho. You can get by with being in OK shape in New Mexico, you need to be in much better shape in general in Idaho. Eastern Oregon is nasty steep terrain also. Congrats bye the way on the Elk

Additionally , much of the Elk country in New Mexico is low elevation by comparison as evidenced by the pinion/juniper forest that makes up much of the terrain
