I was there the last 2 days helping with the search. I’d say the lessons to be learned are 1) check the weather before you go out and either dress accordingly or don’t go out. 2) Carry a compass even in woods you think you know well.

Sorry to hear this! Prayers to the family and friends.
I always have a first aid kit in my daypack, but this was a good reminder to put my survival kit in my pack including firestarters, space blanket, compass, signal mirror etc........................ Haven't had it in my pack due to hunting small suburban woodlots. but I think I will keep it in there all the time from now on. That and the first aid kit doesn't take up much room.

No cell phone. No GPS. 1.5 miles from his tree stand. Horrible weather the night he went missing right at dark. Tornado warnings, high winds, and a lot of rain in a short amount of time.
