Is this maitake/hen of the woods mushroom? There were 4 clumps at the base of a large chestnut oak.

I think they're the same thing. I was scouting an area I like to hunt when the bucks start cruising and found those.

Definitely hen of the woods. A little past their prime. Go back next year a little sooner and enjoy. Or sell them to a fancy restaurant and buy some new equipment.

I picked the smallest one and took a chance with it. I've survived 2 days so far. Was a little tough, but had good flavor.
