Bolts and broadheads

Finally bit the bullet and applied for a disabled bowhunter permit. My awesome bride bought me a nice crossbow that shoots field tips well. I have yet to try broadheads. My question is theoretical (until saturday when I try it). I have some nice 3 to 1, cut to tip 2 blade heads. I suspect they will steer my 20" bolts. I'm fletching a few with 4 inch feathers but I'm guessing they won't fly well either. Has anyone done this experiment? TIA. Tom

Years ago one of the companies my wife and I shot for sent us a couple crossbows. I shot it about 100 times. She shot hers about 30 times. We shot the 3" vanes that were on the bolts with solid steel fixed blade VPA broadheads on them and was drilling 12 rings off a rest at 65 yds. pretty consistently. Under 40 yds. was like cheating as it was scary accurate to the point I would tell my wife to watch a certain hole in the foam target and regularly hit it. Of course this was all done with basically a gun range type rest table. The dang things were crazy heavy, I'd never want to pack one around the mountains. We sold them the next year as they just were not for us. We debated trying them on a bear at our bait since it's any weapon hunting, but scrapped that idea.

Thanks Scott. I will try to get out and shoot with the fixed blade tomorrow. If they fly consistent I'll be in business. Last year I got my second shoulder done and had never gotten back to hunting weight after the first. The 7 mag is definitely out for at least a year. Hopefully this gets me out and about. I miss the heck out of the late hunt.. Take care, Tom

I can't help you with your question, but good luck on your hunt!

I finally got a chance to try the new setup. The cut to tip 2 blades give me an occasional stray. It's not always the same arrow, but it's not that bad either. It's still gonna mean getting close. Now to find a comfortable carry position...

And thank you Dale. This year I'll settle for safe and fun. Meat would be nice but not completely necessary...
