First, no deer were harmed on this adventure. But it was gorgeous country. Well our deer /grouse trip turned more into a grouse trip once we started flushing some. The day before we had to leave we had heavy snow most of the day which left me one afternoon to chase some deer where I had been scouting and hunting buddy who found out cold weather was having an effect on his breathing. Setup on edge of clear-cut with insane fresh sign. Could not call one in before dark. Plan was to return early the next morning. Had fresh snow before sunrise, so had my buddy drop me off (1 hr later than planned) to walk in a find huge tracks walked right through clear cut and directly by my brush blind within 25 ft in the 1 hr since snow stopped. What a kick in the arse! But anyway, had fun with grouse, moose sightings, and a huge maybe coywolf run by 30 yds ahead of us on logging rd leaving. I love it up there. Be back next year earlier for a crack at bow season in the big woods.

Nice work with the grouse! I'm always amazed how high moose rubs can be, I've seen some that had to have been close to 8 feet up the tree.

HFC he had a crazy rub line about 60 yds below an old skidder run coming out of a bog way down below. Easy 8 ft tall, I am 6'5". So my buddy grunts because it was dead calm. And we got a couple of grunts back from down back of the bog. Then seen the first couple of spruce grouse I had ever seen up there.

B&S, if I ever draw a moose tag I'm going to target an old, overgrown skidder trail. I found a few in the mountains that were hammered with moose sign; old rubs, fresh tracks, every bit of vegetation chewed down.

HFC, more moose sign than anything up there. Really Incredible. There was about a 20 acre maybe 2-3 yr old clear cut on top. Every single (I mean every single one) sapling was browsed off above 3 ft and there were 100 piles if there was one. They have been saying for years the population up there us hurting due to tick problem. I don't see it, or it's bounced back. It's like 15 years ago if you ask me.

I really hope you're right about the population. I also think there could be isolated areas that are doing better than others. I've unfortunately spoken with a few old timers in northern VT, basically right next to Pittsburgh (family friend has a vacation home) and they both claim to see far less moose than they did years ago. I'll also add, I used to see at least one moose every time I made a late night drive up, usually a few of em', since I was 17. The past few years, no moose. Even the local bait shop/taxidermist/hunting store claims the same. Hopefully it is an isolated spot of less moose, but it's alarming.

Five to ten years ago I averaged seeing 5-10 moose per year during mass deer seasons. I still manage to see them each year but it is usually one or two.
