At the start of the season we always get a few new hunters posting on the site looking for advice, and I'd like to know how are you making out? Are you seeing deer? Did you get close to shooting one? Did you succeed? Let us know.

I passed on a small 4 pointer in North Carolina and been regretting it ever since. I’ve hunted a lot in Nepaug State Forest and a small 300 acres in Bloomfield but haven’t gotten anything yet. I’ve seen tons of rubs and signs, but haven’t seen too much in person. Unfortunately I cannot Hunt early mornings because my son is on a travel hockey team and has games every Saturday morning. I still love being in the woods, but it is getting frustrating.

newbie here, this is my third bow season and ive managed to kill a doe each year. this years doe was unforgettable. i headed to my suburban hunting spot around 3 pm with plans to dig a shallow pit blind (basically a hole in the ground to put your feet in for sitting on the ground comfortably). i decided to leave my release off untill after i finished digging. the moment i finish the hole and go to test it, a doe crosses the road onto the property about 40 yards away so i freeze. i pray that she will not head my direction and give me a chance to put my release on and grab my bow, but she heads strait towards me. i remain frozen as she quikly closes the distance to about 6 feet away from me! finally she notices me, but the wind is in my favor and we have a staring contest for several minutes before she turns to feed on the white acorns of the tree im leaning on. i grab my release and she picks up my movement and we have another staring contest. she goes back to feeding so i get the release on and reach for my bow, again she spots the movement and spooks out to 15 yards and turns to look at me again. i very slowly pull an arrow from the quiver and nock it. she spots the movement, spooks and i draw my bow. then she stops at 25 yards and turns broadside to look at me. i settle the pin behind the shoulder and release. she turns as i release and the arrow hits way back, but quartering away. blood pours out she bounds over the hill and out of sight. i begin to imagine a long disappointing night as i sit and wait. after 30 minutes i belly crawl to the crest of the hill and to my suprise, there she lays only 40 yards away from the spot of impact. my eyes fill with tears of relief and joy. im so thankfull i was able to get it done this year and i am becoming totally addicted to hunting. None of my friends or family hunt and they all think im crazy, but i plan to continue chasing critters and making memories in the woods.

If you pretend to be bird watching the deer will come around, but only if your unarmed and have binoculars.

In all seriousness, don't go any further into the woods than you have to, be lazy! Everyone thinks that they have to walk a mile in the woods because it's late season, well if everyone is a mile in the woods then I guess the deer are safe in the parking lot ehh? Loud crunchy ground and die hards venturing to the depths won't do you any favors.
