Hi everyone, hope youre having a great season or already had one! Id like to get some thoughts on whether its acceptable to place a trail camera on public land? Reason i ask is my one and only trail cam was stolen back off clover road in East Fork State park on public land. Hindsight it was really dumb of me, but i thought it was off the beaten path well enough, and i didnt expect local folks to nab it so greedily. Anyway, let me know what you think on ethics and efficacy of placing a trail cam on public ground.
Side note, it saddens me someone stole it, especially when i walk past numerous hang on stands all over the woods and never consider stealing them.. lesson learned...

Yeah poor sport for sure. I think some people just adopt the mindset that is their property, maybe because the live nearby or spend a lot of time there, they are the "care taker" I think if they were really upset about the camera being there they could have put a note on it or just taken the batteries, or like in your case the sd card. I just dont get it because i have strong feeling its the same person who has all the hang ons all over the place. Which is another thing, i think hang ons left on public land should be banned. Too often the only good tree to hunt from in particular spot has a hang on strapped to it. Rather than legally hunt from it i prefer to keep looking for a tree i can climb. I think the regs should only allow climbing tree stands. Thoughts?

Do you know that tree stands have to have a name tag on it?

I Did not know that, thats interesting. Whats the intent there? Point of contact in case its left for a very long time and needs to be removed?

I've had cameras at East Fork, but I use a climbing stick to put them 10-12 feet in the air. I haven't even picked up a hiker or hunter on my camera, but I try to stay well off the walking path. I've never been towards Clover, but Bethel-Concord is quite open. I like it for a quick evening hunt, but it's too close to people. I have only encountered courteous hunters at East Fork, but I did hear about the law enforcement officer that was shot at while turkey hunting.

A thief is a thief is a thief ! I've had a couple stolen myself.
I got to the point of, "why put one out" Never needed one before just use more boot time reading sign.
I wonder if they ever think about, "is this the way I honor my parents, or my family ? "

Guys, I invented the trail camera guardian and the trail cam guardian Maxx. Solid steel bands secured to a solid aluminum block housing. Go to Guardianhunting.com. use code guardian10 to get a discount. We have sold thousands and have saved many cameras from being stolen. We include a free tag guardian and license guardian with every order. Hope you will try either as cameras are expensive. Wish you well
