So, as most of you remember, I missed this buck the last Friday of shotgun with the muzzleloader. I can’t lie... it’s been eating at me, but I have just been telling myself that it’s part if it. It wasn’t meant to be. While simultaneously telling myself I suck. Daily. Haha So, I took yesterday off. Was still feeling under the weather. Cold and a few too many Christmas IPAs. My wife had asked me to stay home to help pick up after Christmas as well. I dropped my daughter off for ski team practice at 1:30. Went home and changed, and got in tree at 2:30. There had been a couple pics of him there in the middle of the night since last Friday. I wasn’t very optimistic, but you never know. It was a cold afternoon. We got about 1” of snow in Christmas Eve. The sun had just dipped over the mountains behind me and I New it would be getting dark quick. A few min later I noticed movement in front of me across the brook coming from the thicket I assumed the deer were bedding in. I put the gun up up and saw his right side in the scope and Knew it was him instantly. I cocked the hammer back in the TC ProbHunter Fx and was just praying he’d give me a shot. The banks to the brook are steap. I’m in my bowstand which is on a nice shelf in the hillside. The shelf creates a nice crossing area for the deer and it’s not as steep. The deer have nice run crossing there and down onto the flat I’m on. Anyway, The buck is up top taking a step or 2, stopping, taking a step, and stopping. He was coming. Tail flick, couple steps. I had plenty of light left. He got behind some brush and trees and then he started heading to the run. I had crosshairs on him and just kept telling myself to just wait. Be patient. He hit the run and was at about 11 o’clock and coming down slightly quartering to me, but right to me. Now he’s at 50 yards. He Looked huge coming in. He got to the brook and stopped behind some trees. I told myself first good shot i get I’m shooting. He stepped into the brook at about 35 yards slightly quarting to. I was on him when he cleared the tree and let him have it. He just dropped in his tracks. Barely moved. Most unbelievable animal I have ever had the blessing to kill. I’m still shaking typing this thinking about it.

I forgot to mention, I turned over the bleat can about 6 times about 10 minutes for he came in. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. Mako, not completely... when I was pulling him into the truck both antler popped! I almost puked. I am holding them on in the pic with him.

Brought him to the taxidermist today. We put the antlers on the skull perfectly and measured 21" inside spread... he went over the base kit they will be using and how it micro adjusts. When he is ready to mount the antlers to the form I will go up and do it with him with many pics of the deer alive to make sure we set the rack absolutely perfect.

I ended up buying a kit on Amazon made for shed antlers. Looks ok. If I found both shed antlers without seeing the buck I'd never think they came from one deer. Crazy.

Congrats man, great deer, great story! I got a nice one during bow season and had to wait over night to recover it. Took four hours with no blood for 200 yards and I thought I was screwed but ended up finding him. I think the agony makes it a better experience in the end. I was day dreaming about it all day for a while...I drove to the wrong place, cut a hole in the wrong ceiling, forgot to do just about everything I was supposed too do and it was to the point my wife thought I maybe had a stroke but told her it was just buck fever. Congrats again, thats an absolute stud!

Antlers got mounted to the form in the kit that mounts sheds. I went up and spent some time with the taxidermist to make sure the matched the pics we have of him. Pretty darn close in my opinion. Pretty cool how adjustable these shed antler kits are. You can adjust to near perfection. He's waiting on hide from tannery. Hope to have completed and home July sometime.
